I carried a Leatherman Wave+ for many years and loved it. I recently got into SAKs and it got me thinking about why I'm carrying this Wave+ when I can carry something like a Swiss Champ which is about the same size, half the weight, and has twice the number of tools. Now I EDC a Swiss Champ and the XS pliers and I feel more equipped than when I just had the Wave+. Good video!

Yeah I used to carry larger tools around and then I just realized it's just easier to get the smaller multitools and if I 'need' to get something better then to go inside my car glovebox or office cabinet for the better tools. :P

@@Dracomies please explain to me why Victorinox does NOT update their Swiss Army knife multi-tools with much stronger heat-treated stainless steel frames ?!
⚠️Victorinox is using outdated materials in the 21st century. I have a small $6 dollar Cabela's multi-tool that has a stainless steel frame. It is much stronger than my Victorinox RAMBLER multi-tool.
My RAMBLER is only good for light-duty applications.

@@unitedstatesirie7431please explain to you? Ok, saks have been, and will always be designed as light duty edc tools. Cutting boxes, fruit, pruning the odd branch, opening up a can etc… most edc tasks don’t need a heavy duty tool, as much as the edc “community” preaches hard use, 90% of people don’t use there multitools like that. If you are doing real work, use real tools, I do water main construction, I’m not expecting my Swiss champ to be able to grip and hold 2inch T bolts & survive being covered in sand and mud for 12hr days . Sak steel is great. It’s super easy to put on a razor edge in 3-5 minutes and has great corrosion resistance it’s pretty much perfect steel for the intention and design of the knife, which is light outdoor and edc tasks.
I’d say stick to your 6 dollar multitool. If it works for you, fantastic, go build a house with it. But don’t act surprised when you snap a blade or a can opener trying to use it as a pry bar.
Why upgrade the steel to something “modern” when the tool functions as intended without it? It’s almost criminal how many 20+ old saks are floating around. If you use the tool as intended, you are getting a tool that will last a lifetime.

I carry a Victorinox Swiss Army knife every day, but I am concerned that if I put to much torque on it's philips screwdriver or use it's flathead screwdriver as a pry tool it will bend the Swiss Army knife aluminum frame.
I really wish that Victorinox would update their Swiss Army knives with heat-treated stainless steel frames !

The 91mm knives with the screwdriver in the classic corkscrew's position (and thus, a T shaped handle) have always felt pretty solid to me. I wish they were on more of their models honestly since it feels more useful for most people. But then I live in a region that's moved to almost universally screwtop wine...

Nice! For minimalism, check out the Lever Gear Edge XT. Weighs 1 oz and is extremely flat. Disappears in the pocket. 2 screwdrivers, pry bar, box opener, exacto blade, magnetic hex drive (perfect for Steinwhale). In combination with a SwissCard in my wallet (scissors, nail file, toothpick, pen, etc), it has replaced my 58mm keychain SAK.

@@Dracomies Their little charging unit is the smallest I have found as well. After experimenting, I use Ben Vallack's recommended 5g Wild Sky Gear dyneema bag (Ebay) for front pocket carry to hold: LeverGear charging cable, a couple of wipes, the Steinwhale bit kit and extender, a 711L hex end ratchet, a Pokka pen, a mini Bic lighter and a Wera adapter for my 91mm SAK cap lifter. It all weighs 5.2 oz. I am building another bit kit for any other multi-tool knife I might carry that does not have the 91mm cap lifter. It replaces the Wera adapter for a few more parts. It will weigh 6 oz. without the lighter.

I have a Rambler. Pretty good but I miss the mini champ I used to have. I used the orange peeler quite often and I really liked the pen. I recently bought a SwissCard Nailcare, mainly because it’s TSA friendly. But I’ve been looking at it and I’ve been thinking a good EDC might be the Nailcare combined with a Bantam, pretty complete set of tools but still very lightweight and convenient.

Found out that they started importing black Ramblers to my country as well. Quite expensive now but I think that's worth it. Finding a Knipex Cobra XS here is a whole another story but I'm not so dependent on pliers in my everyday life (and if anything, there is a Gerber Dime for that).
And yes, I had screwed more Philips screws with the (red) Rambler than with a dedicated screwdriver (that sometimes wouldn't even fit into the screw hole). Smaller screws most of the time work too (without having to resort to the Rodenstock microdriver). So yes, if I got to keep a single Victorinox, it would be the Rambler. In black.
So, the 100th like on this video is from me.

  • @stephengaren2219

I agree completely with everything said in this video. I need a pen included though, so I opt for either a Manager or Minichamp. But I also have the option to carry a Super Tinker if needed and still have everything offered in most pliers based multi tools. I own quite a few Leatherman multi tools but for my needs and uses, I get the same out of the Knipex Cobra XS pliers and any of the aforementioned Victorinox knives with a lot less bulk and weight. I found uses for the extra tools in the Minichamp, so it doesn't bother me really. What I'm doing is carrying a pouch with the pliers and either the Minichamp or Manager in it, along with a flashlight. That will just be a permanent thing for me. Cheaper, more lightweight and still does everything a pliers based multi tool does. Plus, some of my Leatherman multi tools aren't that comfortable to use in hand. I like Leatherman but love the Victorinox Knipex combo.

I have carried the Powerpint for some time now. And it does most of what I need. I have had a squirt forever though. And recently paired that in my "office carry" with the mini champ. Together, they do everything I need if I'm at the office or somewhere that i don't need major tools.
Outside of that, I have found that the knipex and an Explorer are the perfect in town EDC. When camping, the huntsman and knipex are great. The only difference being you lose the phillips and gain the saw. But I i recently discovered the Woodsman (discontinued) that merges the two. I just found one on ebay and ordered it. It will take a little work to get it right, but I cannot wait to get it!

I have the Powerpint too and actually made two video reviews on it. Overall it's the perfect size and the pliers are awesome on it. But to me the side tools are very bad on it, ie it's not at the level and quality of Victorinox/Leatherman. I think if it had the quality of the others it'd have been the perfect multitool.

@@Dracomies yeah SOG knocked the size and function out the park with it. But missed on the quality. Which is a shame. That said, for most of what I would use a tool that size for, it does what I need. If I need more, I'll hit up the next level of tool kit, pouch, etc. For me, EDC is what packs the most punch in the smallest form.
Whenever I see reviews on the Leatherman Arc, and people say the new amazing blade is great for opening packages and boxes I am blown away. You paid over $200 to cut open a package? In so many ways, that is just overkill.

I agree the rambler is a great compliment to another tool. For me, it’s the skeletool. The rambler fills the gaps that the skeletool misses. For me it’s much better than carrying a bigger Leatherman.

If I could make a case for the Minichamp
Specifically, the alox version is the same thickness as the rambler in its cellidor scales
The extra tools you call useless, here are their purposes
The “pill separator” is simply a larger flathead. It perfectly fits the flathead sizes commonly found on electrical outlets, whatever size that is. Its also the beefiest tool for light prying. No sharp edges either
The “orange peeler” Is actually an amazing package opener. The plastic clamshell packages get zipped through by it. It also cuts zip lies like its nothin
The “ruler” is useless for me, but its a great tool for depth gauging and bolt measuring. The small flathead is good too, but thats on the rambler
The “nail cleaner” on the tip of the file speaks for itself. Good for cleaning nails
The “precision blade” is a amazing draw cutter. On a knife as small as the one on the rambler, it never hurts to have a backup

Nice choices for non work carry. Both are smaller than what I would carry outside of work. Need at least a p4, goat, sog access, something with bigger tools. Multitool tools are already smaller than the normal dedicated tool. You try to remove a stuck Phillips screw with that Mico sak, you'll have a broken sak. And if you supposedly have the tool that will do the job, handy dandy in a separate bag great. But aren't you saying that you keep a toolbox nearby? So if your tool bag is so close you don't need pump Pliers in your pocket. Your edc should be tough enough to do the job of the dedicated tool or just up to it. If you have to go get the dedicated tool that defeats the purpose of the edc. So basically your prepared for nailcare loose screws, loosing your pen, opening packages, and other light task with your sak and the cobras are great but not tackling much, carry at least the 150.

You're right. I think the usecase is going to be different from person to person. I'm not an outdoorsy person and I'm not a mechanic/electrician/handyman. But imo Knipex pliers> Leatherman pliers (and this is just my personal opinion) and Vic Scissors>Leatherman scissors. The 'other' tools can be found on a Vic, ie I can get a saw or a larger knife on a SAK too. But if a Leatherman plier isn't as good as a Knipex XS. And a Leatherman scissor isn't as good as Vic Scissors, then it's just a ton of bulk in weight and size in my pocket I don't need. imo Knipex XS far far exceeds a Leatherman plier.

@@Dracomies True what you say about Victorinox scissors and saws being better than those on Leathermans. Don't know about other Leathermans but the blade on my Rebar certainly isn't bigger or better than the one on my 91mm SAKs, and the 93mm alox SAKs have a thicker blade. The Knipex is demonstrably a better plier than the Leatherman too. So I tend to always carry my Knipex XS, what I carry with it depends on the scenario. For outdoorsy stuff it goes with the Farmer X (alox SAK more robust than plastic scaled versions because of stronger liners, thicker rivets and sturdier tools), or the Soldier 08 (longer saw) and a fixed blade. For urban EDC with a lot of capability I carry the Knipex with the Swisschamp, in the 5th pocket of my jeans. Gives me a whole lot of options. For a less comprehensive urban EDC the Climber is fine with the Knipex. I'm considering buying the Minichamp Alox - I'd buy an alox Rambler if they made one - again to carry with the Knipex - for a lightweight/summer EDC. In that case I'll always carry it with a Spyderco for a larger blade, as I often do with my Swisschamp/Knipex combo. It's still all easily pocketable and imo more capable than a Leatherman.

Right now I carry my dedicated blade (Civivi Elementum) and a Leatherman Style PS for the pliers & scissors, but no blade. I get what you're saying and I do something similar myself but should point out that both the Wave and Surge have files on them, as do the Rebar etc, whereas the one on the Rambler is just a fingernail file. Having said that I often EDC my Knipex Cobra XS with the Vic Swisschamp, on that I know for a fact that the scissors and woodsaw are better than on any Leatherman, and I'm pretty sure it's file is too. Obviously that may be overkill for some people as the Champ is a bit of a brick although I barely notice it carried in a 5th pocket but there are a lot of other toolsets on different Vic models, the Ranger is a good one to go with the Knipex as it has large & small blade, 2 openers both of which work as drivers, one works on most Phillips, scissors, metal file/hacksaw, woodsaw, reamer/awl and some other bits and bobs too. I opted for the Champ because I wanted to have the inline Phillips screwdriver too. I had experimented with carrying a Spyderco, Knipex, and different pocket bit drivers like you but then found I needed a small SAK too anyway as I like to have scissors on me, so went for the Champ as some of those bit drivers are almost as big as it anyway.

@@Dracomies Yeah there's a lot about the Powerpint which I like, like you. But also like you I find the peripheral tools to be a bit mediocre. I think it's because of limitations on which multitools I can carry here in the UK where we're not permitted to EDC locking blades - so this limits me to just a handful of the reputable branded multitools - that I now mostly carry the Knipex Cobra XS together with the folder and/or SAK of my choice that day. Works for me very well. Just the other day I helped a mate adjust his brakes on his racing bike, instead of an allen head it was a bolt head in a tight spot, which neither the Leatherman Bond nor the spanner/wrench bike tool in my bike tool repair pouch could access...bam I pulled the Knipex out of my pocket and fixed it. Yesterday I watched a vid on another yt channel (don't remember which) where a guy attempted various tasks on his pickup truck with his Leatherman Wave and Knipex respectively, things like trying to loosen/tighten battery terminals, and in each task the Wave couldn't really do it but the Knipex accomplished it with ease. A bit heavier and a bit longer but not much at just under 4 inches is the Hazet 810BHK, it has a locking bit holder.
Both of the above are German brands (but made respectively in Czechia and Slovenia) and cost around $10.

For me, the best is the Manager. Basically a Rambler with a pen. The perfect small
Victorinox. It’s so dumb Victorinox has discontinued the Manager.

You are comparing apples to oranges. If the main tool of any LM is not needed for you then LM is not usually for anyone. Period. I use Handyman but you wouldn’t need probably any tool.

I've actually never seen the Victorinox Handyman. Thanks for letting me know about it.

The Philips on the rambler is too small

Tweezers and toothpick are a big deal IMO

I agree! The toothpick on the Rambler is easily modified too, just use a scissor to cut a bit of the sides and it's a more precise toothpick.
