Fuckin awesome minimalist cab building video right here. The angle grinder action was kick ass. And the toothbrush?? Holy shit!!! I thought I was the only one who did it like that. I want to see this guy build a guitar from scratch.
*Thats a beauty, all that is missing is your own personal logo on the center of the cabinet =), you made that look really easy, I hope I can make my own someday.*
great job dude. yeah i would rather see dove tail joints on the box if it was me but he did it using what he had and its strong enough im sure. the glue does a lot of the work once its dry.
Very good my friend! I like very much this video. In this week, i will buy the wood and build my 2x12" cabinet for bass! This video will help me very much! Thanks!
The biggest part of the cost comes from the speakers. In my country Celestion speakers are around 100 euros/pc, in the States you can buy them at half price. The rest of the materials costs under 100.
supercool !! i have one hughes & kettner 4x12" with greenbacks , i really like the sound but i miss more Bass , i try to re-wire the cab and switch it to parallel /series
Thanks for this. Been thinking of building a small 1x12 cab for myself. Nothing too fancy but the leatherette looks a bit of a pain in the arse. Couldn't help noticing that you should watch where the wires are on your saw! > 4:05 You nearly cut through it :-)
@malukodafaka Super! Just pay attention that bass cabinets are different from guitar cabinets. They are normally built with a bass tube (not closed). Try to copy an original one unless you know how to calculate the dimensions (tuning). Also you have to buy specific bass speakers which work in the 35-2500 Hz range. And you might want to install a high freq driver. In that case you need a passive crossover. All these aspects are important to build a good sounding cab. Have fun!
That's so freakin' cool, man! Would you say it's cheaper to build your own speaker cabinets or buy one? I'm sure you get more customization with making your own though. Well done!
The wood does matter to a certain extent. If you can build it out of birch plywood, that's excellent. Mesa cabinets are made out of baltic birch. The most critical issue is the building. The cab must not have any cracks otherwise precious sound pressure will be lost. So the cuts must be made straight as possible and the parts solidly assembled together. I use 18mm thick plywood. The cabs are a bit heavy, but they sound crazily good.
Yes, box-joints are good. Or at least use some inside bracing with the butt-joints...that's what I do and the cabs are very strong. I always use wood glue and screws.
as a guitarist and a woodworker i have to say tho not proper woodworking jointery for strength. however, using what he had to work with, he did a nice job! the finished cabinet looked nice. invest in a good router and a proper dual action sander.
You're an artisan mate. Beautiful work. I wish I lived nearer to you so you could build me two 2x12 cabinets for me. (My work wouldn't be as nice as yours.) :(
HI NImrodmotion, awesome vid by the way. I'm building a Marshall 1960's 4x12 and I've hit a stumbling block. Basically all the edges on the front are routed which is fine, except for the top which also has to incorporate the 11% slant. How do I get the 11% angle on the routed edge? Best, David.
Hi - would like a little advice if you could spare a moment - I just bought a 2X12 Orange guitar cabinet, open backed, and I was wondering if it is possible to simply put some wood in the back of it and convert it to a solid cabinet? Would this work? And what sort of wood would you advise? The idea is an attempt to improve the bass. Rather than buy a second cabinet I am wondering if I can simply convert the first. Thanks for any advice you can give!
I prefer the sound of a closed-back cab. Yes, you can close the back of your open-back cab with the same thickness of wood as the rest of your cab. Use lots of screws to prevent buzzing. For added bottom-end tone, you could add some acoustic insulation inside the cab and then port the front...but that's optional.
Pause the video at sec 41, and there is the wiring diagram (parallel/series). So if you have 4 pcs of 8 ohms speakers, your cabinet will have 8 ohms impedance, which is suitable for most of the amps. Pay attention to wire correctly the + - terminations. You can find any type of hardware in big music centers or shops.
In this case I had 4 pcs of 8 ohms speakers so the total impedance of the cab is 8 ohms because the parallel/series type of wiring. That is the most common wiring. If you have 4 ohms speakers the total impedance would be 4 ohms with this type of wiring. Guitar amps can work with 2 cabs of 8 ohms loading, that means 4 ohms load for the amp. That is why most cabs are manufactured like this.
Of course it starts at the middle of the bottom panel and ends right there. The tolex has to be one long piece as it is shown in the vid. You can see this detail at min 6:00
One suggestion, don't wire them like that, (2 in series then the pairs in parallel). If any speaker blows then you get a 2 to 1 mismatch in your impedance, 8ohm up to 16ohm for example, and the amp may not be happy if it's valve. If you wire them with the two midpoints connected, (2 in parallel then the pairs in series), if any speaker blows you end up with an impedance of 12ohm, not so crucial. It's a tiny point but worth considering.
The only down side here are your butt joints. You'd have a stronger and better sounding cab if you used dovetail joints. They're a lot easier to cut than people realize, you just have to use hand tools.

Great cabinet. I hope you were using circuit breaker working outside in those conditions!
*Thats a beauty, all that is missing is your own personal logo on the center of the cabinet =), you made that look really easy, I hope I can make my own someday.*
You do great work, thank you for showing everything so clearly and explaining all so well. I know that cabinet sounded fantastic.
un roman cu un simt antreprenorial bravo domnu

Thank you looks awesome
Thanks men for all the instruccions and the plans! greetings from Argentina
Bro your amp speaker cabinet is a absolute work of art i so dig it Grate job Bro.
Very good my friend! I like very much this video.

Would like to see more about the wiring .and its component, are they hi tech.are some better than others.

Amazing cabinet i need make my proper cabinet 4x12 !!!!
Good job man that's awesome

is that correct the wiring on speakr because so many ohm 4,8,18 ohms which is yours?

I'm impressed you work with bare bones tools but put premium effort ! Good job .
What type of 12 s you use !
Super ! Good job!

Where is the start and the end of the leather?
Thanks for making this video. About the only thing I will do differently on my build is to use a box/finger joint on boards.

how much did it cost over all ?
where do you get all you parts?
super , cu cat construiti unul ?
Care e pretul unui cabinet de 1x10" sau 1x12" (fara difuzor) ?
What measures of the box? I would like to pass the measures by email? grateful!
Awesome Video.. Great for future projects :)
great job well done and thanks!!
Those are celestion vintage 30's right?
Does this cabinets specs work with vintage 30's?
Really useful, thank you!
I think your cab should have a good response at bass freqs. Try it with a different amp or guitar rig and see what happens

Man the best way to trace the circles to cut off for the speakers is and will be a compas !! a speaker mesure 31 cm and the cut hole 28 cm ;)
Great video!!!!
Nicely done
How do you wire it?

what thickness of plywood did you use?
Looks like 18mm
Well done !

Drywall screws? I'd hate to drop it.
its in the center on the bottom
you can find the necessary parts in any music center like this: thomann.de or even in the smaller ones
Of course it starts at the middle of the bottom panel and ends right there. The tolex has to be one long piece as it is shown in the vid. You can see this detail at min 6:00
Bravo,super fain!
thank you comrade

Great vid man but Jesus that looks fucking cold there
Eh, it happens. Cheers!

A toothbrush!
that piece of shit probably sounds worse than it looks!!!...I'm sure I'm just being a dick, I mean all the great amps come out of russia , right?
It's just a speaker cab, man. It looks like it's built the same as name-brand cabs. It probably sounds fine.
You guys are right, man, I drink too much...., I watched it again and it looks legit, you guys have a very merry xmas!!!! God Bless
Thats NOT how you build a good cab.
