    Matt Johnson here. Great video. My kids found it and we just took a trip down memory lane. I still have all the ramps and even the ramps Darren made for me when we were in South America. Those were the days. One day I'll make a documentary.

      Dude! For real?! If this is Matt Johnson, you don't know how many people you influenced in Flying Fingers! Your flat bar skills, that wood skatepark, that "brick" six-stair with the handrail! I was making cardboard ramps all over my basement imitating your builds and the rest of the guys from Fingers of Fury. I've never seen Flying Fingers 2, you gotta release it! Fingerboarding is a whole scene now! Much love and respect! ✌🛹

    Really cool to see these old clips. I'm impressed by how good they were back then, especially with the boards they were using.

    • @cdplaya
      @cdplaya  2 роки тому

      Was going to do a part 2 on the period between 2000-2006 or so!
      My thought was to organize it this way: Pre-Tech Deck + early Tech Deck day -> 2000-2006 -> 2007-2014 -> 2014- Now!

      Could honestly be a 3 or 4 part series if you wanted it to be. You break down styles well, made me think about my own style for the first time in a while lol

  • @bubbleflip
    @bubbleflip 2 роки тому +2

    Great video as always. I love the detailed analysis on each person's style. I think I would just break it down to the different characteristics, some of which you highlighted:
    Tucked/untucked/semi-tucked
    Flat/tipped fingers
    Realistic/exaggerated heights
    Realistic/pressure/unrealistic tricks
    Realistic pop/scoop pop (board over hand)/sticky finger pop
    Simple/technical tricks/combos
    Perhaps there are also other aspects on how clean tricks are landed:
    caught high in air/caught above ground/bounced
    fingertip landing/knuckle landing
    landing over both sets of bolts/landing parallel fingers like riding skis
    flow during and between tricks (no awkward stops or rolling backwards when landing in a grind or between tricks)
    Rotating tricks fully to a multiple of 180, except over hips
    Anyway, it's a great take on fingerboard styles with excellent highlighted examples. Would be interested to see other parts of this series.

      @@cdplaya If I could add two more things I forgot:
      Trickset(s): Street, transition, technical, freestyle, old school, unrealistic
      German mode (off-hand behind the back)

    THANK you Chris for doing videos like this. I’m sometimes kept up at night by the wealth of knowledge sitting online in old videos and forum posts that’s now completely forgotten. So much of our history as a community is only backed up in one place. This type of video you’ve made is the perfect way to keep some of this older content organized and “maintained” in a sense.

    • @cdplaya
      @cdplaya  2 роки тому +2

      You're welcome - I realized the same thing, that once the forums died, most of the archived history was gone! Someone needed to share the old stories with the community and get some exposure to these "absolute legends" 😁

      Yes! I agree with you - I couldn't find a ton of footage from him from the old days. We will have to make a TKY dedicated video to explore his style and impact on fingerboarding!

    nice work. I remember those old videos. And what a blast from the past seeing that black plastic funbox, i totally forgot I had one of those back in the day. I unfortunately when I was a teenager I broke my last two knuckles and the outer most bone in my hand which now stops me from tucking my fingers.

    I have a fairly unique style, my finger stance isn't the "normal" finger placements, meaning rather than using my Index and Middle I've learned to Fingerboard using my Middle and Ring finger. Growing up when I'd pretend my hand were a person, id imagine my thumb as the head, index and pinky as arms, and my ring and middle as the legs. I'm still using only two fingers, just not the same as everyone else. I've gotten hate for it, but I'll never change doing what makes me feel comfortable as a Fingerboarder.

    • @cdplaya
      @cdplaya  День тому

    We can learn a lot from old videos. For example, the Fingerskate embryo was very faithful to a skateboard.
    As you can see from Afrobi and other Fingerskaters, everyone is aware of the line flow.

    Exaggerated tricks have always caught my eye, and always for me, seem to feel the best. It's a demonstration in board control, almost as much as doing them low and realistic is. But it just feels better to me to do them exaggerated

    This was awesome Chris. I'm surprised I had seen all the videos that you showcased, I guess that shows how enduring those videos were, even when I started in 2005. I remember being so inspired by D-Mac, Matt Johnson, but especially Tony Pauthex back then. It's sad we've almost lost access to these videos, I'm happy so you're keeping the flame going.

    Unreal how much this was me as the narrator, the amount of inspiration I got from Damien, Tony, Darin, and Matt Johnson is insane! And MJ's park was INSANE!! The slick wood, metal coping and metal sheet skirts at the bottom of every ramp! The brick 6 stair with handrail and straight hubba planters! BTW Flying Fingers is online, I would love to see Flying Fingers 2 if anyone has it! ua-cam.com/video/Yn7yJsu5JHM/v-deo.html
