In this video I explain why Note length in Cubase can be confusing, and how to simplify your approach to managing this aspect of composition.

    About me:
My name is Anthony Chisnall. I'm a musician & songwriter.
    My channel is these things:
    1. A place to share my music - both songs and instrumental pieces. Much of the music I write features in...
    2. Tutorial videos about music composition and production
    3. An outlet for me to discuss all things musical - including technical break-downs of software and tools that I use, as well as more wide-ranging discussions of topics that interest me.
I play the guitar (electric, acoustic, and bass), and record all of my own synth-based sounds myself too, but I can't sing very well (huge understatement!), and so my wife, Pauline, who has a lovely singing voice, has come to my rescue. You'll hear her on all of my songs.
All of my music is written in Steinberg's Cubase (currently Cubase 12).
I try very hard to make my videos PRACTICAL and no-nonsense - if I don't use a feature, I'm not going to waste your time trying to sound like an expert on it! This is the stuff I use day-to-day, so I think that's also what you'd like to hear me talking about.

The work you are putting into your Cubase videos is phenomenal and extremely helpful. I find the Steinberg manuals to be much less useful; they seem to be written for people who already understand the software completely. So having an in-depth video explanation makes it all clear. Thank you!

That's exactly what I hope to achieve with this series! Thanks very much for the feedback :)

Scale legato? Well thanks for that! Scale legato was *exactly* what I had forgotten the name of and was looking for (back in Cubase 1/2 I had used to use Logic Editor on the MIDI and I suppose that would still work). I used it to adjust a bass part that had *too much legato* after an instrument change in the render in the final mix, adding some breathing to the original MIDI part without having to edit every single note individually - I dropped (most of) it by 13% and lo! Space! Of course I ended up hand editing some of it afterwards anyway to get some more bounce in, but it really helped get it into the right place before I re-rendered it. So yes, there are (rare!) uses for it.

This is very helpful! I often get holdover sounds when I cut and paste a section (because the note ends very slightly into the next measure), this gives me a quick solution for fixing it before cutting. Thank you.

Thank you for taking the time to educate the Cubase community. I've been a Cubase user since version 5 (albeit on and off over the years). Cubase is a complex piece of software and I'm grateful to be able to access the useful practical knowledge that you share in your videos. The manual is helpful but your channel is quite a unique resource and a time saver.

Excellent! I have often wondered about how to solve my midi issues and have been thinking that one day I will deal with it. So this was the day when you gave that precious gift. Thanks!!!!! But I can see a point in having the quaintize grid set to 1/16 and different values of the length quantize, especially since I make a lot of music in midi sequencers. I play live, but combine with sequencers and arpeggiators.

Thanks for the feedback! Yes, the Length Quantize feature certainly has its uses. It's a tough call as to whether the potential confusion/complexity is a price worth paying.

Excellent as always. Does note off velocity not effect aftertouch?

    • @OneManAndHisSongs
      @OneManAndHisSongs  9 місяців тому +1

Thank you! Not exactly - aftertouch is basically "intermediate" velocity - that squidgy bit is a separate, 0-127 zone that outputs its own dedicated MIDI message. It's separate from the part of the key sensor that transmits velocity. (Having said that, going into aftertouch and back out again will result in you getting a different range of Note-Off values, so maybe I should have said "Yes"!)

Thank you for your terrific channel. I always get something out of it even though I've been working with Cubase for many years. I have a frustration with Cubase 13 and I think you may be just the person to help me with it. Where as before setting a midi channel in the inspector was painfully obvious. With the new design I'm embarrassed to say has me fumbling around, wasting time and brain cells. Setting up for multi timbral use is where I most frustrated. Could you consider a video addressing this issue?

Hi Antony, I have Cubase13, in my key editor I can't see the L box or Velocity Box that you have in your version, have you any idea as to where that function is now?
