Looking at them side-by-side, it's like the original had a weird filter over it which I never noticed before. While the original doesn't look bad, it actually holds up pretty well, I'd say it looks better without that filter. The characters are another story. They've lost most of their detail and shading while having their sharpness increased resulting in strange, mannequin people straight out of the uncanny valley. Despite saying that I prefer the new look of the game world, the difference there isn't much. The difference between character models, on the other hand, is like night and day. The remastered ones just can't hold a candle to the originals. I'd say the best option is to play the original. It has much better character models, is closer to the developer's vision for the game and is a lot cheaper. Plus it's backwards compatible so there's no excuse (unless you're on PlayStation which, unfortunately, has no backwards compatibility).
It seems to me that the first Assassin's Creed (Altair's, not Ezio's) shows better faces, landscapes, cities and buildings than Assassin's Creed 2 and Brotherhood.

I think that is one of the reasons why I so fondly remember AC:2 the music was so atmospheric I can still remember the first time I seen Venice in this game it was so amazing along with the carnival competitions. Man I loved the first time playing this game. Will go down as one of my all time favorite games.

cutscenes are better on 360, gameplay is better on Xb1. It's because this was a sloppy remaster. They didn't actually remaster the game, all they did was adjust the lighting and textures
when i looked at them both, the 360 version looked a little more artistic in it's coloring with all the shading going on. The Xbone version just looks bright and the colors seem to pop out; something you'd expect from a title not as serious in tone as the AC series.

Honestly, I love the original so much more. There's just something about that atmosphere... it takes me back to the nostalgia of when I first played Assassin's Creed II. In terms of looks, it just feels like the remaster stripped away that magic from the appearance of the original.
Same here. I think they really should have just messed with the character designs and maybe textures, but the over all colors were much better in the original. Also the haze not only made it seem mysterious, but also allowed the world to appear bigger than it was. You can see EVERYTHING now and things far off are a little too detailed, making the world appear smaller.
CG_Sigma these guys are the masters of downgrading and misleading people into buying games like Watch Dogs that are absolute garbage. Don't get me wrong Assassin's Creed Ezio story is incredibly awesome but this so-called remastered is not worth the money for a game I already have.
It suffers from the same problem The Master Chief Collection and Final Fantasy X suffered when re-released in 'HD' Collections; if all you do is raise resolution and improve the lighting a bit, all you end up doing is make the bad textures easier to see. Which in turn makes the game look WORSE ironically.
Halo 3 got zero updates. Which creates the uncanny situation of CE and 2 having graphics from this decade and then Halo 3 having last decade's graphics if you play the games in order. Halo 2 actually looks worse in several areas since they didn't update the animations on anyone and so much of the new graphics don't physically exist. It's like Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing all over again.
Finally, someone who understands. It seems like a common misconception that higher resolution displays automatically mean pretty looking graphics, but this would only be the case if you improve the textures and meshes as well.

The "salmon" filter you are talking about is supossed to resemble florence landscape, thats why monteriggioni and forli have some dark/gray filters and venice blue/green ones, the remaster is just ... wrong...

I never played either, so I come from a completely unbiased standpoint on this... I can say, the graphics on Xbox One look a lot CLEARER, but the Xbox 360 graphics look a lot more IMMERSIVE (for lack of a better term).
Granted the graphics look... odd, but come on you guys are having the full Ezio Trilogy all over again! Forget graphics for one second and enjoy the amazing story and gameplay of one of the greatest Assassin of the franchise. I rest my case.
The coloring enhancements overall only look nicer in the remastered version because it brings out the view distance more and makes everything so much more beautiful when looking at the countryside or on top of a tower. But the character models look bad with the enhancements. I also like how they added more texture to the buildings in the remastered to make them more detailed.
It's disgusting how the term 'remastered' usually makes video games hyped. PC version = there you go, no spending £40 on a reprint of an upscaled game.

You clearly don't realize that IGN took literally all the bad parts of the remaster (including the fast climbing glitch that was present in AC2 and they never mentioned that what the viewer was looking at was a glitch and not normal gameplay) and didnt showcase anything good about it to make it seem bad. That is why no one cares. I'm just happy to be able to play these on current gen.
Drigo924 it still doesn't deserve a price increase. Licensing costs are added towards the product so that bumps to price up. I remember the old days of AC, it just felt different... new. I agree with the fact people may not have a last generation console, but they are much cheaper than buying an older console, like the PS2. Personally, I agree with remasters of PS2 era games because there's a lot of work that should be put towards it. I know the AC collection looks different, but the point I'm trying to make is there's not a huge difference between remasters, just resolution upscales. True classics deserve the rights to remasters or even better, a remake.

mizzox did you ever play Grim Fandango Remastered and switched on the fly between the original and remastered graphics? The original looks worse because the models aren't coloring to the environment and that's what's happening here but the remastered version (character model wise) looks worse

The Bioshock Collection... Return to Arkham... Skyrim SE.... And now the Ezio trilogy... It should go without saying.... if you aren't going to do something well, don't do it at all.
It's not that they removed/changed shaders/textures, it's that they didn't fix the lighting system. It's almost like they just went with the default settings for the lighting and called it a day.
For those people who claim they can't really see a difference or a think the brightness is just turned up look at the draw distance it's cranked up a lot and look at a lot of those Jagged areas that were a bit sharper it's a lot better on the One X by the way it gets rid of even more jagged pixels and all that
The third comparison, missing from this ign video, is the slightly tweaked 360 version running on Xbox one via backwards compatibility. Lighting effects from the standard 360 game are slightly improved and the image is slightly sharper. The frame rate also seems more stable, but I can't confirm that. The "remaster" like most of the others using that label, loses something... The mood, the sense of place and time. I like my yellow shaded, slightly blurry, over shadowed renaissance Italy... It had a mood. Shiny cleaner graphics take away the sensation that you are in the past. Might as well redo the Mona Lisa, she needs to be in 4k and enhanced. The shading, color levels, and background just doesn't suit modern expectations.
Due to the shading being deeper, whites are off white. Should have said that instead of yellow so as to not confuse some simple minded people who need to nitpick everything. When applied to sunlight this shading effect made the spectrum of yellows stand out during the daytime, instead of bright whites, we got orange and yellow. Similar to the effect found in many Italian films of the 1960's and 1970's before "restoration". Find a film copy of any of the Eastwood westerns or "Once upon a time in the west" before restoration experts got their fingers all over them and ruined the light and shadow. I wish they'd remove the grit and dirt and leave the color and film gain alone.

The issue is that they completely broke the lighting throughout the world. The Dynamic lighting, specifically meant for the 360 last gen games was meant to have a higher contrast, heavier shadows and less detail to hide polygons and immerse the player. A lot of 360 games do this to save space or memory. Same thing goes with how much the backgrounds are blurred and the color is muted, yeah its less colorful but it feels more polished and connected. Sure (most) of the textures are updated in the remaster, but a lot don't seem to fit as well and there are still plenty that don't look like they ever got switched out. The high camera shot on the tower is terrible. yes it has some color added but without that blur and fogged look, the low poly blocky backgrounds and textures is beyond apparent and bad looking. the faces, again are made for a previous generation of game design and don't work with popping them into a separate engine and thinking it'll look better. The shadows, blur and contrast helped hide that and made it what it was at the time, whilst the remaster just looks a file drop.
I don't even understand why this is a thing. AC2 is already backwards compatible, just make the other 2 backwards also. No need for a badly done "remastered" version.
oh and most gamers (the smart ones who follow the flow of hardware specs) go to PS4 we'll move over to the Xbox Scorpio later but we'd rather stay with sony cause they currently are faster than Microsoft at getting their upgrade out (if it is weaker anyway)

when i looked at them both, the 360 version looked a little more artistic in it's coloring with all the shading going on. The Xbone version just looks bright and the colors seem to pop out; something you'd expect from a title not as serious in tone as the AC series.
yeah ac2 has it's artistic look. this remaster makes it look better , but lose it's art, and tone. and at the same time kill some of the life the game has

Honestly, I love the original so much more. There's just something about that atmosphere... it takes me back to the nostalgia of when I first played Assassin's Creed II. In terms of looks, it just feels like the remaster stripped away that magic from the appearance of the original.
It looks alot more realistic, with the fogginess and the dreary colours. The textures are much more smoother and the graphics aren't 'forced'
Same here. I think they really should have just messed with the character designs and maybe textures, but the over all colors were much better in the original. Also the haze not only made it seem mysterious, but also allowed the world to appear bigger than it was. You can see EVERYTHING now and things far off are a little too detailed, making the world appear smaller.
Really Ubisoft you're gonna let CoD defeat you... At least their remastered version was high quality

It suffers from the same problem The Master Chief Collection and Final Fantasy X suffered when re-released in 'HD' Collections; if all you do is raise resolution and improve the lighting a bit, all you end up doing is make the bad textures easier to see. Which in turn makes the game look WORSE ironically.

Halo 3 got zero updates. Which creates the uncanny situation of CE and 2 having graphics from this decade and then Halo 3 having last decade's graphics if you play the games in order.
Halo 2 actually looks worse in several areas since they didn't update the animations on anyone and so much of the new graphics don't physically exist. It's like Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing all over again.

I never played either, so I come from a completely unbiased standpoint on this...
I can say, the graphics on Xbox One look a lot CLEARER, but the Xbox 360 graphics look a lot more IMMERSIVE (for lack of a better term).
Granted the graphics look... odd, but come on you guys are having the full Ezio Trilogy all over again! Forget graphics for one second and enjoy the amazing story and gameplay of one of the greatest Assassin of the franchise.

The coloring enhancements overall only look nicer in the remastered version because it brings out the view distance more and makes everything so much more beautiful when looking at the countryside or on top of a tower. But the character models look bad with the enhancements. I also like how they added more texture to the buildings in the remastered to make them more detailed.
It's disgusting how the term 'remastered' usually makes video games hyped. PC version = there you go, no spending £40 on a reprint of an upscaled game.

I agree with the fact people may not have a last generation console, but they are much cheaper than buying an older console, like the PS2. Personally, I agree with remasters of PS2 era games because there's a lot of work that should be put towards it. I know the AC collection looks different, but the point I'm trying to make is there's not a huge difference between remasters, just resolution upscales. True classics deserve the rights to remasters or even better, a remake.

For those people who claim they can't really see a difference or a think the brightness is just turned up look at the draw distance it's cranked up a lot and look at a lot of those Jagged areas that were a bit sharper it's a lot better on the One X by the way it gets rid of even more jagged pixels and all that
The third comparison, missing from this ign video, is the slightly tweaked 360 version running on Xbox one via backwards compatibility. Lighting effects from the standard 360 game are slightly improved and the image is slightly sharper. The frame rate also seems more stable, but I can't confirm that. The "remaster" like most of the others using that label, loses something... The mood, the sense of place and time. I like my yellow shaded, slightly blurry, over shadowed renaissance Italy... It had a mood. Shiny cleaner graphics take away the sensation that you are in the past. Might as well redo the Mona Lisa, she needs to be in 4k and enhanced. The shading, color levels, and background just doesn't suit modern expectations.

Due to the shading being deeper, whites are off white. Should have said that instead of yellow so as to not confuse some simple minded people who need to nitpick everything. When applied to sunlight this shading effect made the spectrum of yellows stand out during the daytime, instead of bright whites, we got orange and yellow. Similar to the effect found in many Italian films of the 1960's and 1970's before "restoration". Find a film copy of any of the Eastwood westerns or "Once upon a time in the west" before restoration experts got their fingers all over them and ruined the light and shadow. I wish they'd remove the grit and dirt and leave the color and film gain alone.

The issue is that they completely broke the lighting throughout the world. The Dynamic lighting, specifically meant for the 360 last gen games was meant to have a higher contrast, heavier shadows and less detail to hide polygons and immerse the player. A lot of 360 games do this to save space or memory. Same thing goes with how much the backgrounds are blurred and the color is muted, yeah its less colorful but it feels more polished and connected. Sure (most) of the textures are updated in the remaster, but a lot don't seem to fit as well and there are still plenty that don't look like they ever got switched out.
The high camera shot on the tower is terrible. yes it has some color added but without that blur and fogged look, the low poly blocky backgrounds and textures is beyond apparent and bad looking. the faces, again are made for a previous generation of game design and don't work with popping them into a separate engine and thinking it'll look better. The shadows, blur and contrast helped hide that and made it what it was at the time, whilst the remaster just looks a file drop.
