I live just over the MA line in NH and folks here just aren't taking this seriously. They don't understand why the fuss, if it's mild for most. They cannot grasp that the overwhelmed health care systems in other countries ahead of us in this are just a very likely preview for what's to come here, even if it's 'mild' for most. Public events and such are getting put off, and people are upset, think it's all paranoia. Maybe when one of their elder loved has to fight this, they will take it more seriously. I am concerned and saddened to see how many people are ignoring the dangers right now. It's going to bite us all on the rumps shortly.

@andreasm1 This pandemic is heaven-sent for detractors of the president like this man, whose hatred of him you could see from space. They know they can sling gigatons of mud at him and that plenty of it is bound to stick.
In the New York Times comments back in December and January, numerous people openly registered their loathsome desire for the onset of a recession which would impair his chances at re-election. It evidently never occurred to them that wishing for (other) people's lives to be hit with disaster is evil.
It perhaps goes without saying that rich liberals (the primary constituents of the NYT readership) are among the people least affected by recessions.
When I submitted comments politely but incisively needling the readers who expressed this desire, they were rejected by the moderators.
Refusal to publish comments critical of the Times or its readership is a habit of theirs.
They do it often, presumably with considerable pride and satisfaction rather than the shame which would be more fitting to such a weak, self-serving, sneaky, and cowardly practice.

Lotusmeadow They aren’t the same thing at all. For one thing, inbound air travelers could be quarantined across the board. But travel bans aren’t all that effective once you have local community spread. Once that happens, social distancing is all we’ve got to buy us some time.

Saying 'it doesn't work' is problematic. I've heard temperature monitoring and travel bans don't work, but they definitely do help, so they should be pursued.
and he says quarantine works...a travel ban is just quarantining somebody in their own country. if you can't test people when they enter your country, why would you let them in? it's impossible to trace chains of transmission if you don't know where the chain started.
China is working on a self contained test that gives results in 15 minutes. when that is ready, I'll re-think travel bans.
Rose Stewart I think the reason why travel bans are of no use now is that there is community transmission. If you have tens of thousands of cases within a country, a few hundred extra cases from another country won’t materially affect the spread of the virus but implementing the travel ban takes time and resources away from other interventions that can make a difference. It’s similar to testing, once you reach a certain number of cases, the opportunity to stop/slow the spread of the virus by identifying patients and tracing their contacts is no longer practicable. That’s why the UK has moved to only testing within hospitals.

J H Oh sorry, I should have said I am in the UK. News this morning is that govt is about to advise over-70s to self-isolate. Word is it will be for 4 months. Now I can see why our govt is delaying big interventions like this for as long as possible because that is going to be tough for people. We’ll get through it, though. I’m sure healthy younger people will do everything we can for our elderly neighbours.
Absolutely no one has paid attention enough until it was too late, I’m in NZ and when this first started my local paper on the front page no less, showed school students from WUHAN were coming into the country and our powers that be didn’t see a problem letting them! My country (India) is handing the situation better right now, by putting heavy travel bans and quarantines in place. Government officials are actually dropping into the homes of those who've travelled from infected countries and asking them questions to ensure that they're disclosing all information and not putting others at risk.

In times of crisis the covernment takes the action and have to show leadership, so it is political if you look at it that way. In Major city in northern Oregon. Went to 3 stores before 8 am. No TP and heard delacate steady coughs in shoppers. I was the only one wearing PPE. One cougher tried to talk to me outside the store. She said she was a truck driver, and coughed in her hand then grabbed her own cart. I believe I am witnessing community spread. It's that nice lady trying to help you separate carts at the shopping center, the cart you just touched or the key pads you touched to pay.

He literally wrote the book on how governments should handle a wide speed out break of a virus. The WHO, CDC and John Hopkins works directly with him on how to handle pandemics and outbreaks. Not the medical side but how to keep it from spreading, how to contain it and keep it from spreading even more in an ethical and legal way.

There's no single expert and there never has been. The whole idea of a top expert is misleading.
No individual is an expert on a single disease, never mind ANY disease which spreads globally (the definition of a pandemic).
Also, Gostin is a LEGAL GOVT POLICY ADVISOR not a MEDICAL INFECTIOUS DISEASES EXPERT.
This doesn't mean he isn't talking sense (he is) and his opinion is indeed valuable, especially regarding policy decisions (Trump has mishandled this crisis and US citizens will pay for it with their lives) but it's also important to recognise that he's not medically qualified and clearly not apolitical. There are others who also need to be consulted.
What was poor foresight on his part is now hindsight and history to us now... we learnt by experience that planes need to be grounded... and so we are where we are today... and so planes have stopped flying, and pilots and flight crew are unemployed at the minute...

Since that is the most effective way of killing the virus, would masks really make much difference? You still have to have excellent hygiene for masks to make a difference since you have to use your hands to put them on and then you touch other things.
If you are sick, a mask decreases you risk of infecting others but healthy people wearing masks does little to help with these situations if people aren’t also implementing other preventative measures.
But ya, sometimes I feel like the CDC and WHO know not much more than we do as average people ( maybe because they really don’t know that much more than us and they are not informed much sooner than everyone else due to the quickness of information transmission)
@@Hulachowdown I think it would. If we can teach them how to wash their hands we can teach them what type of mask to wear and how to put it on. Surgical masks prevent a sick person from getting others sick so if EVERYONE wore one no one would pass it on. If you are healthy you can wear a vented mask (n95 or higher) but how do we really know if we're healthy since if we have this dang virus we're asymptomatic in the early stages.

We were the first to develop testing kits that the majority of the world are now using (the ones you declined)...The Robert Koch Institute (full of actual experts) give a daily morning briefing to all citizens about all updates, new insights and changes in approaches. I'm actually a little proud of how they are handling it the more I write... (I keep editing this as more and more comes to mind)

you do not get it. The virus is in the US and will spread rapidly. Not a problem of travelers bringing it in from the EU. Switzerland is surly better off then the UK - but Swiss are banned and Brits will fly in. Does not make any sense. There are Trump golf resorts in the UK and in Ireland - there is no ban for these countries. Russians and Indians get in, but EU citizens are banned? That is not a travel ban but a political hate response against the EU. US have to take measures in the country to protect elderly people and people at risk - testing and sorting out who is infected is the most important mean - but tests are lacking. The point is not to help "our government" as it does not need any help. Normally it would be the governments job to help people to pass such a crisis.
A travel ban is adequate if done before the virus spreads in the country and if absolute. That is what Taiwan did successfully. If the virus is spread over the country, the appropriate means is testing all suspicious people and isolate them if positive. So you slow down the infection rate and avoid the break down of the health system. Beds for intensive care are needed for the heavy cases and exist only in a limited number. Unfortunately there are not enough test kits available in the US. Even Heidi Klum was not able to get testet because of no kit available.

He obviously is well educated on the matter, my misgivings stem from his comments on avoiding large gatherings, schools ect ect. Then turn around and allow flights from areas with known outbreaks, where individuals will spend hours in a confined space with circulated air, basically a flying incubator. This plane will then land in a major airport, the now infected will continue on either other flights, mass transit systems, or take it home to their love ones. I am aware the ban maybe too little too late, the damage is already done, but the situation is liken to a broken water pipe: when you find water flooding you apply measures to stop the water, and at best slow it. The travel ban is an attempt to slow the flood.

@@jamesormondroyd1009 Taiwan closed the borders very early, tested thousands of people, shut down public events and public transport after the first cases showed up and was able to slow down the wave. So it did overrun the health system.

Dear Colleagues, as some of you may recall, when I was a professor of
pathology at the University of California San Diego, I was one of the first
molecular virologists in the world to work on coronaviruses (the 1970s). I
was the first to demonstrate the number of genes the virus contained. Since
then, I have kept up with the coronavirus field and its multiple clinical
transfers into the human population (e.g., SARS, MERS), from different
animal sources.
The current projections for its expansion in the US are only probable, due
to continued insufficient worldwide data, but it is most likely to be
widespread in the US by mid to late March and April.
Here is what I have done and the precautions that I take and will take.
These are the same precautions I currently use during our influenza
seasons, except for the mask and gloves.:
1) NO HANDSHAKING! Use a fist bump, slight bow, elbow bump, etc.
2) Use ONLY your knuckle to touch light switches. elevator buttons, etc..
Lift the gasoline dispenser with a paper towel or use a disposable glove.
3) Open doors with your closed fist or hip - do not grasp the handle with
your hand, unless there is no other way to open the door. Especially
important on bathroom and post office/commercial doors.
4) Use disinfectant wipes at the stores when they are available, including
wiping the handle and child seat in grocery carts.
5) Wash your hands with soap for 10-20 seconds and/or use a greater than
60% alcohol-based hand sanitizer whenever you return home from ANY activity
that involves locations where other people have been.
6) Keep a bottle of sanitizer available at each of your home's entrances.
AND in your car for use after getting gas or touching other contaminated
objects when you can't immediately wash your hands.
7) If possible, cough or sneeze into a disposable tissue and discard. Use
your elbow only if you have to. The clothing on your elbow will contain
infectious virus that can be passed on for up to a week or more!
What I have stocked in preparation for the pandemic spread to the US:
1) Latex or nitrile latex disposable gloves for use when going shopping,
using the gasoline pump, and all other outside activity when you come in
contact with contaminated areas.
Note: This virus is spread in large droplets by coughing and sneezing. This
means that the air will not infect you! BUT all the surfaces where these
droplets land are infectious for about a week on average - everything that
is associated with infected people will be contaminated and potentially
infectious. The virus is on surfaces and you will not be infected unless
your unprotected face is directly coughed or sneezed upon. This virus only
has cell receptors for lung cells (it only infects your lungs) The only way
for the virus to infect you is through your nose or mouth via your hands or
an infected cough or sneeze onto or into your nose or mouth.
2) Stock up now with disposable surgical masks and use them to prevent you
from touching your nose and/or mouth (We touch our nose/mouth 90X/day
without knowing it!). This is the only way this virus can infect you - it
is lung-specific. The mask will not prevent the virus in a direct sneeze
from getting into your nose or mouth - it is only to keep you from touching
your nose or mouth.
3) Stock up now with hand sanitizers and latex/nitrile gloves (get the
appropriate sizes for your family). The hand sanitizers must be
alcohol-based and greater than 60% alcohol to be effective.
4) Stock up now with zinc lozenges. These lozenges have been proven to be
effective in blocking coronavirus (and most other viruses) from multiplying
in your throat and nasopharynx. Use as directed several times each day when
you begin to feel ANY "cold-like" symptoms beginning. It is best to lie
down and let the lozenge dissolve in the back of your throat and
nasopharynx. Cold-Eeze lozenges is one brand available, but there are other
brands available.
I, as many others do, hope that this pandemic will be reasonably contained,
BUT I personally do not think it will be. Humans have never seen this
snake-associated virus before and have no internal defense against it.
Tremendous worldwide efforts are being made to understand the molecular and
clinical virology of this virus. Unbelievable molecular knowledge about the
genomics, structure, and virulence of this virus has already been achieved.
BUT, there will be NO drugs or vaccines available this year to protect us
or limit the infection within us. Only symptomatic support is available.
I hope these personal thoughts will be helpful during this potentially

I'm in NH, and we have 13 "presumed positive" cases, and it all started with a guy that had just recently come home from Italy So many other cases that I've heard about have had the same scenario; a result of foreign travel.
