      @@Audiolympian Bower & Wilkins is the only company who I think gets even remotely close to the quality of the best JL Audio stuff. JL all day, but B&W is pretty damn good as well. I'm happy neither brand is as trendy as they used to be. Apple (a company who I loathe more than anyone) used to pair some of their products in some sort of partnership, and that's when I stopped buying B&W for the better half of a decade. And people used to hate on JL Audio up until very recently due to their high price and how ubiquitous they were during the Fast & Furious era when they had the reputation of being the best when so many people had "systems" in their vehicles (people love to hate the best, you know). These days, aftermarket vehicle sound systems are rare. This is sad because it means manufacturers like JL will have less incentive to continue R&D for ever-better speaker quality, lowering the demand for high-end replacement speakers, and consequently moving their focus to development of mass-produced speaker designs for OEM car companies. One main reason is the complex network of integrated vehicle electronics, where traditional "head units" are now obsolete and are integrated into vehicles' dashboard displays that integrate everything from climate controls to suspension settings. With all these battery powered cars, they now often add fake engine noise through the speakers, and external amplifiers are commonly used and mounted in locations difficult to access, and cars often will have from 10 to over 20 different speakers, often including a subwoofer. These stereo systems sound much much better than 20 years ago, but it makes for a TON of labor time and a whole bunch of custom, specialized bypass and integration electronics that you need to purchase and install. And then you have 10-20 speaker locations that you need to buy a new speaker for or no longer use the speaker location, and those speaker locations are usually non-standard sizes and often require adapters because the stock speakers are usually too tiny that normal-sized speakers won't fit. And now with the mandate for electric vehicles, you won't even be able to run these super premium custom systems since there's no alternator to upgrade and you would probably get only 100 miles on a full 12-hr charge of your Duracell car. It is cool because it makes it more special if you do have a traditional car with a premium aftermarket system these days, considering it is so impractical to upgrade any newer vehicle, especially luxury vehicles; but it sucks that these companies are gradually going to stop R&D'ing these super premium stand-alone speakers - and the people who can best afford these exotic speaker/amp upgrades are driving new cars and they won't want to be tearing out the entire electronics system in their cars to upgrade 15 speakers and add new amplifiers, especially when the option is to either not use some stock speaker locations or to upgrade every speaker location at $300-$1000 per speaker and add several amps to power the new speakers. Point is, the demand is rapidly fading out, to everyone's disappointment, and once the fully electric cars take over, these speakers and subwoofers won't even be possible because there will be no practical way to power them. Imagine shorting out primary electronics in your electric car by trying to power a 3000w sound system, or powering a subwoofer that rattles everything and cracks the solder on sensitive electronics. Trying to listen to finely reproduced music in your car could end up as a $40k mistake, lol. But you would be saving the planet, so it is all worth it. 😂
      Anyway, my rant is over, and the tie-in is that the JL W7 subwoofers are what are used in the Phantom/Gotham home audio boxes; however, the Phantom/Gotham versions include a few upgrades to the W7's, including tighter tolerances (since they don't need to operate in extreme environments like trunks of cars in 110° summers and -10° winters). Not many people know this, but the Phantom/Gotham products represent the only upgrades/refinements that have ever been made to the original W7 woofer design. They're the same speakers, just with a few minor upgrades. Essentially, they made the best subwoofer even better. Except this is also represented in the price, whereas the W7 can be purchased for $1300, and the home audio versions are over $10,000. Nearly the same speaker though. Fun fact.

      @@skankytrick W7 is not used in the Gotham. I thought so too until I took the woofers out so I could transfer it from home. It was too heavy with the woofers on. To my surprise I realized the motor structure is a lot bigger than my fathom f113.

    • @skankytrick
      @skankytrick 3 місяці тому

      @@Laissez_Faire I'm aware it is not an actual W7 woofer. JL said they started with a W7 and beefed it up for the indoor enclosure, whereas the W7 was made with reliability high on the list to be able to perform in vehicles throughout hot summers and cold winters. Without needing to perform in harsh environments, JL stepped up the speaker design for the Gotham application. However. it has been a while, but I thought the Gotham and Fathom use the same speakers? In any event, they are based on the W7, but I have not compared the back of one of those speakers to the back of a W7, so I don't know how similar or perhaps different they are. Are you saying they appear much different to the eye? That's pretty cool if the upgrades are that significant. After all, the W7 has beeen the same for the last 25 years (and it remains my favorite car audio woofer by far).

    • @taylorhansen9290
      @taylorhansen9290 Місяць тому

      @@Laissez_FaireThe Fathom and Gotham drivers are indeed based on the W7. They are essentially “beefier” versions of the W7, with larger motor structures.

      Good question. Two separate subs always smooths out the bass in the room but the JLAudio’s are kind of a class of their own. But I’d probably go with two pb16’s

      not even in the same category. Do yourself a favor and stay away from svs and try B&W, Paradigm or fathoms. Obviously I got the gotham but I also have a B&W DB1 (sweet sub) and two Paradigm Sub 1 (insane subs for the size). But a single Gotham well calibrated disappears in my room.

      I didn’t test it at that level. I wish I could have, I don’t own it, I was at a dealer store. But I did take a quick little measurement at about 45hz and it was rocking. I feel like they're a nightmare to repair, cost, size and weight-wise; sooner or later they'll need at least one repair on the foam surround or/and amps. Maybe two F113's are a smarter move. Or two Velodynes Digital Drives.
