The No Winter Maintenance (NWM) route can be considered by most intermediate to advanced riders with experience cycling on rougher terrain. You can expect to rocks, roots, and puddles coupled with large ascents and descents, and to top it off has very limited camping options. This not a smooth rail trail by any means, but instead something to consider as an adventure ride with a touch of hike-a-bike.
For most riders, the trip length will be 2 to 4 days. Completing the loop in 1 or 2 days should not be taken lightly and will pose a serious challenge for most. The route starts and finishes in the city of Orangeville, but alternate start locations are widely available including the starting point on this trip, which is in Honeywood, Ontario. At the time of this trip, we parked in the North Dufferin Community Center for several days without issue. It shares it's parking lot with a fire station, and a fantastic pulled pork lunch truck which I highly recommend. The route can also be modified in may ways to provide shorter or longer versions.
Gravel bikes and mountain bikes are both suitable for this route, but there are plenty of sketchy areas sprinkled with sauce, so those using 700 wheels should make sure to ride 38cc tires or larger. 650b and 29-inch wheels with 1.9-2.25 inch tires are a very good choice. And because there are no shortage of testy inclines, a wide range of gears is also encouraged.
