Finnish Railway Museum
The Finnish Railway Museum is a National Responsibility Museum in railway heritage. The museum is located in Hyvinkää about 60 kilometres from the Finnish capital, Helsinki. The museum presents the history of Finnish railways in an authentic railway station and depot area of the Hyvinkää - Hanko Railway.
Museum’s exhibitions are divided into several different buildings. The museum has three exhibition halls, an engine shed, a station and barracks, a former home for railway workers. The basic exhibition presents locomotives and rolling stock from different eras of the Finnish railways.
One of the gems of the exhibition is the oldest surviving steam locomotive from 1868. The first railway line in Finland was opened for traffic in 1862. The very first steam locomotives have disappeared into the pages of history but at the exhibition a goods wagon built in 1860 tells the story of the beginning of the Finnish railways. The Finnish Railway Museum is also a home for the only surviving Imperial coaches of the Russian Emperors and many other interesting items connected with Finnish railway history.
Suomen Rautatiemuseo
Suomen Rautatiemuseo on valtakunnallinen vastuumuseo ja muistiorganisaatio, joka tutkii, tallentaa ja esittää suomalaista rautateiden kulttuuriperintöä. Museon sijaintipaikka on kulttuurihistoriallisesti ainutlaatuinen Hanko-Hyvinkää rautatien asema ja varikkoalue, joka on rakennettu 1870-luvun alussa. Alun perin yksityinen rautatie yhdisti Hangon sataman niin Helsinkiin kuin Pietariinkin. Alueen alkuperäisistä rakennuksista näyttelytiloina toimivat asema, veturitalli ja kasarmi. Alueen rakennukset peruskorjattiin Liikenneministeriön ja VR:n avustuksen turvin 1990-luvulla.
