I had 75 in my brooder and it rained for 6 hours. I had no idea I had to be careful about that. When I looked in the next morning i had about 60 piled up in heaps. Started to clean them out and they were moving. I laid out fresh dry bedding for them and put them under the heat lamp right away. In total I lost 17. Three days later, a raccoon managed to get into a section of the fencing I didn't realize I missed stapling and killed every one of them. Learned my lesson. Tough one, but I learned it good. Took care of that raccoon though, but good.

We’re following the same schedule as you this year it seems.
We also put our 3 week old batch out Sunday night. 10 day forecast was clear! We lost 22 Monday night. Our most massive loss ever. Solidarity.
Ours were under cover but they huddled so much under stress they smothered each other

We should all go to the news station and protest against the weatherman!

My chick's are on there 3rd day in our Salatin style chicken tractor.
Ours are congregating under the roof and not under the wire.
    Sorry for your losses.

Cover the corners with tin. Just leave 25% uncovered. That will also save you on food costs when it rains.

Where do you purchase your Bio Char

    • @hdezoo

I made it myself. I found a good source on Amazon for a good price though, and started using that instead. I later learned the signs that I thought were coccidiosis, we’re actually not. It was just some intestinal shedding that occurs normally in this meat breed. Since then, I haven’t used bio char at all, and haven’t had any issues with coccidiosis.

We had our healthiest batch we've ever run have 0 losses at 4 weeks. 80 birds. We had a day 2 weeks ago where the heat index hit 114f here in South georgia. Lost 40 birds in 1 day.
Learned the limitations of nipple drinkers that day and won't be using them again. Luckily one group had the nipple drinkers break and were on bell waterers, we lost 0 birds from that group. The groups on nipple drinkers lost about 66% of them.

Yeah, I have heard similar stories about losses on nipple waterers in hot weather. Sorry to hear that.

I'd put steel over all of it for rainy nights. When not needed I'd leave it on the other steel.

First, sorry about the loss because I know things like that are painful because for one the investment of money and money you won't be making but also the time and energy that goes into farming, and then for me personally I just feel bad when animals die in an unintended way. I feel guilty about it, but that's me.
Yes if you have a quick cover, even a tarp that's specifically fitted for that purpose that could help. But you made a comment that I don't think you should assume is true, which is that area where they were gathering is the most breezy part of the shelter. There are so many factors that go into that I'd say it's almost impossible to figure out. If the wind is coming in at a certain direction it's going to cause currents inside that shelter, but change wind speed a little bit and it's going to change. Change the fact that you have a high or low pressure system sitting over you and it's going to change. Anyway, food for thought. I would assume the chickens are going to gather where they feel the most comfortable for whatever reason, so if it's in that open area, you won't be able to simply move them into the covered area and walk away. They gather there for a reason.
Where we live we can get some pretty violent winds that come in with storms, so I would have a cover for each side along with the entire top, temporary sides and covers to put in place for when those storms come through and then remove them as soon as possible unless the temps are going to drop and stay down for quite a few hours. I'd personally only want one side and a small segment of one quadrant open for the storms that we get, and even for the side that's open I think I'd want a fine wire mesh to go in place when these storms come through which would help to break the wind and help block rain from coming through while still allowing air to move through.
Peace to you and good luck with everything, like the videos.
