I had a 42 year career in Pharmacy and discovered that the last thing that I wanted to do was be a retail pharmacist. I found that you can use a Pharmacy degree to go in a lot of different directions. I ended up in Hospital Pharmacy management and enjoyed it most of the time. Other options are Compounding Pharmacy, Nursing Home Pharmacy, Research, FDA, DEA, Military. I even know a Pharmacist who went into criminal justice and became a Forensic Pharmacist. Also, another Pharmacist became a legal researcher and work for a law firm.
So, look around, get varied rotations and try different aspects of Pharmacy and you will find your niche.
It is a good profession but retail is tough. Good Luck

I was a pharmacist for 30 years, I enjoyed it, and it was rewarding. Most of the time, jobs were plentiful. Towards the end, jobs started to dry up. That's interesting! I've spoken with quite a few Irish community pharmacists in the last three years that have sentiments that oppose this view - especially with regards to community pharmacy in Ireland (dealing with the government schemes in community pharmacy is a nightmare in comparison to other countries like the UK). I've heard that the salary in hospital pharmacy in Ireland is not too great and that in general, the pharmacy profession in Ireland is just not as valued.

@@sheabutterandroses I was fresh out of college walking into a high paying job when I first wrote that post, but a year post grad now I can understand why the pharmacists you spoke to felt that way, particularly in community pharmacy. While the salary is still excellent in comparison to other career paths with the a similar time investment imo (particularly if you're a locum pharmacist), the stress levels can be through the roof and the scheme system in this country is years behind the UK and other countries. Regarding hospital pharmacy, I have heard that talks between hospital pharmacists and the HSE are ongoing re salary increases but I do agree that hospital pharmacists are drastically undervalued, especially in comparison to community pharmacists.

I discovered nuclear pharmacy and have been extremely happy with my career at one of the best hospitals in the country. I believe that before even enrolling in undergrad, students need to work in customer service and find out how well they can handle complaints and irate customers. If students dislike this part of customer service, they will not enjoy dealing with the complaints that many healthcare providers, such as retail and hospital pharmacists, receive. This would be a case when students should not dream of those careers.

I am not saying, every American is a racist and an evil person with an evil past. But if an American wants to call me a Nazi for no reason, just because I feel sorry for you to pay so much for your education while here it is for free, which was my wish for all of you (what a Nazi-thing to do!), then I want to remind such people of the fact, their past had not been any better... However, I think doing pharmacy gives you a lot of job opportunities.... The commonest yet choking part is the hospital and retail. However, with the skills you'll develop and knowledge you'll get in pharmacy, you just have to think outside the box to make decent money. Also, with the way things are going, no matter which field you find yourself in, to get lots of money, you'd have to set up your own business..... Applies to doctors, nurses, graphic designers, whatever course..... To make wealth, you MUST set up YOUR own business.

It depends on where you go, you can still get good pay in some aspects of pharmacy.. When i first graduated i got into specialty and it was good pay, And there are some growth in different areas of pharmacy. In the bls report it also stated that hospital sector will be increasing job impact as well. But i agree that if you have passion you should get in.. Medicare part D and Obamacare, which dramatically increased the government's rule over medication coverage, has destroyed pharmacy. After paying for rent/lease, utilities, staffing, maintenance, etc. making $3 per prescription makes filling drugs a breakeven business. Because of this, pharmacies had to cut staffing and had to take on other, better margin paying parts of healthcare, such as vaccinations, testing, etc. For example, we had a patient that had a $22,000 special order, drop-shipped from the manufacturer drug. After spending 15 minutes on the phone getting this thing covered by the insurance, ordering it with the risk of the patient not picking it up and demanding his script back to go somewhere else, our after drug costs profit was $5.28 on this script. It's not worth dispensing drugs.

I used to watch Paul’s videos on how to get into pharmacy school when I was in undergrad. Now as a P3 I’m banging my head wondering why did I miss his video about why pharmacy school might be a bad idea lol.
I think a lot of other people in pharmacy school or practicing pharmacists would say the same thing now, but a few might say this is a pessimistic view.
My suggestion to those thinking about pharmacy school: do your own research too and HONESTLY ask yourself if you’re passionate about pharmacy. But whatever you do, don’t listen to universities when you’re trying to decide if pharmacy is the right profession for you, they will be biased and want you to to go to pharmacy school.🤑

I hear this all too well, i am a pharm tech and majority of my pharmacists now say they wouldnt do it again if given another chance. Some say they wished they wouldve done residency to get into a hospital setting. Retail pharmacy is the worst! I hear and see the stress the pharmacist go through. Corporate always breathing down your necks because your pharmacy “numbers” are not met or whatever. They say patient care is something the care about but its not! Corporate only cares about numbers! The work and life balance at a retail sector is not good either! I personally wanted to become a pharmacist but after working at a retail pharmacy for 3 years, i am now convinced i dont want to anymore. Its not the salary, its the life style and corporate decisions that makes it hard to become a pharmacist (retail).

So, if you truly are passionate about pharmacy, which I have rarely seen, then retail is not for you. Also, schools now a days are in it to milk you for every penny they can. There's a surplus of new graduates for a very finite amount of positions. People generally want to go into the field to help people but in retail, let's be honest, you don't have the time. The corporate takeover of retail is focused on one thing, profit. It's cheaper to understaff, burn pharmacists out, and settle lawsuits from errors vs staff appropriately. The amount of schooling that is required for the job is pretty crazy and you're honestly better off going into medicine if you're not concerned with the hours. I worked for two and a half years in a hospital and decided to go back to school to get my D.O degree. Is it worth it? I'm not sure but at least I'll have more job satisfaction and I won't be treated like a replaceable piece of trash in the workforce.
