    In order to boost their standings even higher, we would like to review the most powerful breed of these two-wheelers called maxi scooters. They offer unmatched cargo capacity, powerful engines comparable to fully pledged motorbikes and sporty styling.

    I have had many many bikes. 35 years riding. I recently had a pcx 125 and that was a ripper of a bike, great fun to ride and everywhere was flat out wide open throttle 127kgs. I recently upgraded to a 300 forza, 2019. Best of both worlds, although much heavier and far less manoeuvrable, as I can take it out of town and on freeways comfortably 130/140kmph max speed, but comfortable at legal speeds. Great storage. Suspension and ride quality suffers a bit as she’s only on small wheels but a great great bike. Service once a year /every 12000kms (for me that’s six months or so/as I just can’t stop riding the thing) . Bike previous to this was a 1998 zzr1100. That is an awesome bike, however completely over kill. Never ever utilised more than 20/25% of its capacity. No abs/no storage/no traction control. One rear tire could buy two complete sets on the forza.

    After riding super sport motorcycles for 15 years with the constant stress on your wrist and elbows, I have chose to break the cycle with something a little with the same riding dynamics but less stress on the body! Yamaha Tmax 530 is perfect... the up riding position gets the stress off your elbows for a longer and comfortable riding experience with a strong two cylinder 530cc engine. This Maxi Scooter really handles well and I have no issues riding along side of my fellow rider on the larger motorcycles

      I had had motorcycles all my life till i rented a scooter in Barca. Never looking back. Will sell my Z750 and get a 250-400cc scooter.
      I realised that with my motorcycle I constantly try to go higher gear to quieten the loud engine in lower gears. On my scooter i enjoy a more laid back riding style, twist and go, quiet, nifty-shifty and practical. Bikes just demand a more aggressive riding style. Scooters are non-pretentious

But there is one separate niche of scooters, maxi scooters that provide a level of power and comfort comparable to a motorcycle. Would you ever consider getting one of such rides for yourself?

    The AK550 is the only real option here. Affordable, modern, powerful, light, good brakes. I currently have the Burgman 650 which is better than anything here (powerful / manual & auto gears / electric folding wing mirrors for beating traffic / large storage), but it's damn heavy, the brakes are crap and the wheels are impossible to clean, is looking a bit dated and I need a replacement soon, and perhaps a change as my last 3 bikes have all been Burgmans. I have owned a few bikes over the years and I have racked up over 200000km on them. I currently have a Kawasaki Voyager 1700 with over 90000kms on the clock. I have a Suzuki Burgman 650 AN Executive scooter with close to 10000kms on the clock. Previously I owned and Yamaha XV1100 on which I clocked up about 100000kms and I also owned for a short time a Piaggio MP3 400. I didn't put many kilometres on that one as I bought it for my wife to learn on and when she didn't I sold it. I feel I have some credentials to talk about both bikes and scooters. In this video you mostly talk about scooters up to about 550cc. I know you say another video will look at the Burgman 650 but I reckon when there is a BMW 600 and 650 as well as the Aprilla 850 referred to by another commenter the 300s and 400s are not what you would call maxi scooters. I know you are looking at bigger than pizza delivery scooters that are still ok for the city commute but will hold their own on the open road but I don't expect to see any Piaggio Vespa GTS on the freeways or highways. For those looking for the 1000cc scooter I think that may be a forlorn hope. In Australia where I live bikes/scooters over 250cc are expensive to register (that is the charges set by the government so you can ride on the roads). The costs include a roadworthy inspection every year (at least in NSW), the registration charge and associated GST and compulsory third party insurance. For example my Suzuki Burgman costs nearly $850 to register each year and my Kawasaki 1700 costs about the same amount - perhaps a little bit more. I have ridden all my bikes on open roads and highways and I can say without a doubt that the Burgman is as good as any sports bike, tourer or cruiser on the open road but the Kawasaki is great for the open road and not much use in stop/start city traffic. At nearly 400kgs wet it is a heavy bike where as the scooter is much lighter and easier to zip around the city. If your main riding is the city, all of the scooters covered here will do the job. If you intend to do some touring and get out on country roads I would suggest nothing under the Gilera 500 - others I don't think will have the power and comfort for a long day's riding. Thanks for posting the video. Enjoy the ride on what ever it is you ride.

      Hi Roger, What state in Australia do you register the Burgman? I thought $800 is a bit excessive considering my 650 V-Strom is less than $400 inc. green slip, pink slip and the actual rego...I was considering trading the strom for the 650 Burgman...but if they cost that much to register....might reconsider.
      Regards
      Dave (From Sydney NSW)

    • @rogersmith5371
      @rogersmith5371 5 років тому

      My Kawasaki Voyager costs $130 to register in NSW + $625 for green slip (QBE)+$23 for Road worthy check. My Suzuki Burgman 650 is kept in Tasmania where they have MAIB (Motor Accident Insurance Board) which provides the CTP insurance as GIO once did in NSW. You are not required to have an annual road worthy inspection but all up to register the Burgman in Tas is about $800. I don't know what it would be in NSW. I am 65 so I think I am in the high risk group even though I have racked up close to 200k/kms and have had no claims either for CTP or comprehensive insurance and I haven't had a traffic infringement in over 10 years. No I'm not a goody two shoes and I did use to commute 200kms/day on my Kawasaki before retiring. Now I am lucky to be a regular weekend warrior.

      I have owned both a Yamaha Majesty YP400 and (presently) a Suzuki Burgman Exec. While owning the Majesty I undertook a 640km trip from my place at Plainland (1 hr West of Brisbane, QLD) to a residence at Willawarrin (some 30km NW of Kempsie, NSW) - returning the next day - on the Yamaha Majesty 400. I still maintain that for a trip of that distance, the Majesty was a better choice than the current Burgman Exec would be. Engine size isn't everything - rider comfort counts highly on the longer distances. My fatigue level after a similar journey on the Burgman would exceed such on the Majesty. The rider also remains dryer when riding in wet weather on a Majesty, when compared to a Burgman 650.
      Where the Burgman scores over the Majesty, however, is that due to its Horse Power reserve I can tow a 1220cm trailer with the Suzuki.
      In fact, I might be more inclined to choose my Moto Guzzi V9 Bobber, for long trips, - excepting for that trailer towing option with the Burg. Both the Suzuki and the Moto Guzzi V9 make about 54HP.

      Yes - cargo capacity is a big PLUS factor, on the Bergman. Where I live one can purchase soda cans in 24 can or 30 can cartons. The Bergman can carry a carton of 30 PLUS a carton of 24 (total 54 cans) in its under-seat storage. This storage, which might normally take two helmets (or a helmet and your motorcycle jacket) is included at no extra cost. And there is still a helmet hook which is usable with a little cable loop stored on top of the took-kit - for when stuff stored under the seat excludes your helmet. I fastened a topbox on using holes where the passenger backrest attaches, to take stuff that is overflow from the under-seat area.
      Most motorcycle sales consider panniers (saddlebags) as an extra-cost option. Ditto, the windscreen. (I once owned a Honda Shadow Bagger, with 'screen - the 'extras' were some $3000+ from my wallet.)

      & on top of all that full coverage insurance is like $30 per month & 90 mpg even hauling ass. Top speed 58-65mph everything matters on a 125CC uphill, downhill, wind if you're tucked in or not tucked in along with tires you're using 🙄. But these little bikes can smoke most traffic off the start unless they're really trying to take off, then they will smoke u. Lol but they do pretty good in pretty much any type of city 🚦 they will Cruise right along without being tucked in at 55 mph VERY comfortably, I weight about 180lbs 6' with all my gear on when I'm riding

    I bought a new Yamaha Tmax 530 (2017 DX spec) in September 2018, but I have ridden it only 4 times.
    Once on the way home from the dealer, once the day after, and then only to the dealer and back when I tried to take it back.
    I advise that before you spend 1.4 million Yen (or equivalent) on this bike, that you insist on a test-ride first.
    In many respects it is very good: It is smooth; it is quick you ask it to be; it handles very nicely even with a passenger; its low speed handling in traffic and car-parks (parking lots) is easy even with a passenger; its wind protection is quite good.
    In just two respects, it is very disappointing (to me personally): The fuel economy is only 2/3 as reasonable as my 2013 Suzuki DL650 V-Strom, meaning the Yamaha only gives me 20-21 kilometres / Litre ridden gently; it makes an awful noise in this rev-range 3,700 - 4,800 RPM, which in Japan corresponds to legal cruising speeds of about 30-60 KPH.
    Cager On Two Wheels (a popular bike reviewer from Portugal who reviews bikes in English, too) says it sounds 'aggressive', but in my (and my wife's) opinion, it is unbearable after about 30 minutes.
    I am going to try noise-cancelling headphones / ear-plugs and see how that goes.
    Just a heads-up to give you advanced notice.
    ridden gently
    See the videos by Cager On Two Wheels and The Missenden Flyer for detailed reviews of the Yamaha Tmax.

      Yamaha Tmax build in europe now (France) so workmanship is high so the price is high! BMW big price it is on his nature! so Suzuki Burgman all made in Japan it is like made in Germany, pricey but what a hell of a scooter equipment!

    • @LoneBrowncoat
      @LoneBrowncoat 5 років тому

      OK guys, think of it this way, you buy a basic bike, then you want to turn it into a bagger/dresser, think of the cost for a full fairing, the storage/luggage, it mounts up.
      A scooter, nee a maxi-scooter already has that in the price and the centre stand isn't a 300$ option, that's if, your model of motorcycle even offers one.
      {Forgot to ask...Is Vetter still in business? They had some real beautiful full fairings and well thought out hard-bags.}

      @@automotiveterritory www.gilera.com you will have to enter and find your country so it can show you retailers on your country, the price for a reason is not in the official sites, just google "(location of yours) piaggio retailers" and watch any of their sites to see the price,also gilera belongs to piaggio. so if you find a piaggio retailer,most likely it will have it.

    These maxi scooters are so sexy and masculine. The scooters we have in India all have flat footboards that, in my opinion, is so feminine (which isn't a bad thing; just not meant for men).
