I think anyone who grew up in a dysfunctional family is a codependent, in some form.
We are taught, from a very early age, to be outwardly focused.
You listen to how the door closes. You anticipate moods. You navigate your childhood, trying to please or avoid punishment.
Your childhood, even if you're the Golden Child, isn't about you.
Unless, you're the Scapegoat (like me) and then EVERYTHING is about you. "Why did you...?" "Why can't you...?"
But, it's always about pleasing or appeasing someone else.
My Golden Child older sister drives her kids to perfection, because that is how she earned love.
I've taught my kids to be good helpers and eager pleasers, because that's how I earned love.
    And the cycle continues.

Labelling anyone something doesn't help anyone, learning about it and how to respond does.

Actually labeling is not typical in therapy for example. Therapy focused on traits and behaviors and pinpointing when something is not useful or getting pathological in a sense.

In my opinion the interviewer is very technical and not open minded at all and thinks he knows it all. Great interview Kenny 👍

I agree! Who in the world would want to be limited to a definition that clearly needs to be updated? 🤔

I so appreciate your explanations. You've helped my experiences, my life and my responses make sense. Being able to see the truth clearly empowers me to make effective changes.
For so long i knew that something wasn't right but I couldn't find the proper insight to address the issues.

Trauma has ‘a perception of being life threatening’ I.e. it felt overwhelming. Different to actually being life threatening. It might not be one thing but a combination of things that felt overwhelming and therefor was ‘perceived’ to be life threatening.

The term needs to be updated. Because, when an upbringing leaves a child to always try to please others and think they are less than others, and become a codependent because of dysfunction and shame, this is trauma.

If you are an autist... Being yelled at for any reason will feel life threatening.

I kind of understand the false empowered route. Being mentally gaslit by an actual narcissist and not knowing any other copying strategy, and being a codependent empath myself, I learned to mask my codependency by pretending to be more narcissistic. so people wouldn’t see me as a victim to take advantage of. Thank goodness that was just a stage!!

Wow, I cannot believe how annoyed I was every time the interviewer impeded the flow of the conversation to argue about the semantics around how the word “trauma” should be defined. 😅

I do want to thank you Kenny for providing an example of how to go about communicating through a a disagreement with someone. I realize there was a misunderstanding and you helped me pocket an effective method to take with me in the future when I find myself in a similar situation! Which I have in the past already, and never know what to do with my emotional response and therefore cannot reach resolve! Appreciate the display of patience in real time!!

Narcissism is rare by the trending standards of labeling. Ted Kaczynski warned us about technology doing this with the modern leftist. No one spends more time pointing, labeling, destroying ,and Sadisticly enjoying this like a person that calls themselves "empath"

Trauma =when your watching an atomic bomb fall slowly through the sky and landing in your own yard,
Satori =the brief moment when you open your eyes to realize its a dud

Are codependency and counterdependency the two sides of the same coin ? Also attachment theory explains a lot of the traits found in all the above labels you listed.

I don't agree that being an empath is not a good thing. What I know is narcissists lack empathy and like to exploit other people and they like to be put on a pedestal and they feel entitled.

Well, I am one and it is horrible and debilitating. I totally agree with Kenny that it is severe enmeshment and co-narcissistic.

Okay I'm just at the beginning of the interview and I'm confused about our definitions here because when I've seen full-blown NPD, there is a psychosis, extreme dissociation and it didn't show up for many years. it's a split from reality that is unlike anything I've ever witnessed in my life and changed my understanding of The human condition. I had been told that my mother had NPD but after this experience, I would say light borderline maybe historic

Then my guess is that my spouse is a physopath because he's covertly trying to take my life.
