  • Some sounds for the Akai Miniak, an underrated little monster. Mostly classic stuff, freely mixed with a few more complex/adventurous sounds.
No external processing was used; only the internal effects of the instrument.
In this video, I used single sounds only: No multis, no layering, no sequencing. Perhaps I'll do another one in the future, exploring the powerful Multi capabilities of the Miniak.
All sounds programmed from scratch except one, an heavily modified factory preset.
EDIT: Check Part 2 here - mostly ambient textures:

Well done. I would love to see Akai release a new version of this with a USB port and librarian/editor software. It truly is/was a "monster" machine, especially given its original price point.

Great sounds and playing! If Rick Wakeman could have had one of these back in the day, it would have made his roadies a lot happier!

Maybe not so happy - 'cause he would have fired the roadies altogether! : - )

@@carlomezz Good point! Though I would guess they worked for the band as a whole, not him personally

It's so refreshing to hear someone actually PLAY a synth properly, rather than pretending to play by using a sequencer, which is to music what finger painting by 2-year-old is to art.
Great variety of improvising styles to match the different sounds. Loved the 4ths with the Hammond sound - reminiscent of Keith Emmerson's use of quartals.
    Bravo.

Since I can't see you except for your hands, I'm going to imagine you're wearing a cape. :D

Just bought one today! $150 USD. The seller plays one live, regularly, and had two backups, and decided that was one more than he needed.

Good find. I think I paid around 200 euros for mine, including shipping from Germany.

“Underrated”? I didn‘t even know this little monster! Sounds really good, but looks like a lot of menu-diving.

Yes, programming the Miniak from its panel is an exercise in masochism. Since it's totally compatible with the Alesis Ion, I used an Ion to build the sounds, then I transferred them to the Miniak.
