    Love that you included the experiments and near-misses before the flames. To me, so much of firemaking practice's allure is in getting to know the whole 'personalities' of different tinders, extenders, and fuels in different conditions through informed experimentation just like this. Though now that it's getting chilly where I am, the 'success' part is extra nice too!

    • @ReWildUniversity
      @ReWildUniversity  Рік тому

      Thanks -- I feel like experimentation really lets us get to know a medium so much better than when we're just told how to use it. In this case I knew that the cattail fluff is only an "nest" to help hold and nurture an ember, but was really hopeful that the fins would create enough heat to start the pod up. Sadly the heat wasn't even close to hot enough -- which was so helpful in understanding how the fins can be used more effectively. I'd also love to experiment with seeing if the fins can ignite a more formidable coal extender, like hoof fungus.
      You're getting chilly too! Hood weather today in Wisconsin!! =)

    In addition to being strong, milkweed cordage is also very soft.

    Amazing plant!
    I grew up brainwashed about what a terrible weed it was. Then I found out it was good for butterfly food. It's only in the last year or two I've found out that we can eat it too. And I still have a lot to learn! Thanks as always for a great video!

      No such thing as a weed. These plants just show up when they have a job to do. They don’t cause the problem, it already existed and they just want to fix it for us.

    Had no idea about that inner "fin" I'll definitely have to try that soon! Thank you for sharing this! Not in my area but a desert plant with a ton of uses is yucca. Cordage from the leaves, the green stalk and white petals are edible raw, the dried stalk makes great building material for shelters as well as a fuel source for fires and the roots can be pound and ground into a powder that acts like a soap when mixed with water. Quite the plant in my opinion 😁 love you all! 💚💚💚

    • @ReWildUniversity
      @ReWildUniversity  Рік тому +1

      Okay, so I really want to meet yucca. And oddly enough, a few times I feel like I've seen it growing in people's yards up here. Is that possible? Perhaps a cultivated variety? If so, I should start growing some!

    such a great plant that nature provide to those who explore it in depth.
    I haven't tried it yet for fire making. lately I tried fire roll friction fire with cotton ball and wood ash and I was surprised at how fast and easy it is compared to hand drill or even bow drill ones. you can even keep a few roll in your pocket to start a fire whenever you need, a very convenient way to get a amber quickly.
    and dry pine needles being super common where I live it makes a great tinder bundle. 💕

    I always play with these. I love it when Miss M is in the videos. Is this plant edible? How would you eat it and what parts would you eat?

    • @ReWildUniversity
      @ReWildUniversity  Рік тому +1

      It is indeed, my friend! Despite the warnings in many books. The young shoots are the first edible part, available in spring. Then, a bit later, the flower buds appear, and are great on pizzas =). The flowers are delicious in their own right after they bloom. Then the young pods make a great vegetable, followed shortly by the "milkweed white" I hinted at in the video. I feel like I'm forgetting something here, but that's a pretty good list on its own, lol!! The suggestion is that you should steam or boil it lightly before eating, but I met a man the other day who has regularly been eating it raw with no ill effects. I've eaten small amounts raw with no issues but haven't tried as much as he told me he was eating. Make sure of your ID if you try the shoots -- I did a video on the common plant that looks similar to it. ua-cam.com/video/TPEQRCsLTF4/v-deo.html

      @@ReWildUniversity I LOVE it when you remember me!
      I am doing a video on the 21st. It's my 50th birthday and I'm so EXCITED! My daughter is coming over in the morning to do a photo shoot and video. I don't know if there has ever been another human more THRILLED to turn 50. I have many reasons for this.
      Aren't you so PROUD you lived on this earth for 50 years? So many never make it to 50. It's humbling. This has been a huge transformational year that I will never forget and I'm sure you'll see that in my video on the 21st. I'll do my very best to entertain you all, haha. Perhaps I should do a video later around dinner time when I have a birthday drink, lol. That will loosen me up. I love knowing that your family will watch my video. It means a lot to me.
      My silver fox hasn't found me yet. LOL
      That's cool though....kind of busy loving myself right now. I know he will come in God's time and not mine. God's plan is always better than mine. I don't always trust myself or my plan, lol.
      You look AMAZINGLY SEXY as always.
      I'm going to go for a sexy look on my 50th. FUN is the theme. I am going for breakfast, golfing, dinner and drinks and karaoke. I don't golf and I don't sing, but I'm going with friends that do and I will have so much fun.
      Sending you so much love right back. LOVE!

      We think of you so often, Sherri! And always hoping that silver fox comes your way =) We can't wait to see your video! And yes -- I couldn't agree more! 50 rocks! I especially love how you're going to do some things that aren't necessarily "your thing". A few weeks ago a bunch of friends wanted to go square dancing. Rebecca and the girls wanted to go, and I told Rebecca that although I'd go and do my best to enjoy it, the thought of going square dancing was probably at the absolutely bottom of my list of things I'd imagine I'd enjoy.
      We went and . . . I had fun =) It was kind of kids' square dancing which was probably more enjoyable for me than the grown-up variety, but it was neat to see that I could be so wrong about something that I thought would suck.
      So . . . your words inspire me =) Sending you love and we'll look for that video on the 21st! The whole family is sending you love, hugs, and a huge Happy Birthday!!!
