    I think it’s great that you highlighted the different accommodations. My undergrad and grad school were extremely different in size and availability of certain accommodations was shocking!

      This is actually. My first time. Watching. This video. So proud I found it. And teacher. That I really had. When I was in. High school. She actually told us. She told me. And she told. A couple of her. Other students. We will not. Be able. To make it. At all. She was always. Put in a style. And always. Make a note. Where? A frown. I know. That There wasn't so. Much more? That I can learn. What Myself. And it takes. A lot of. Morning. To do it. With nobody. Really around I can do it all. Thank you for this videos. They really help a lot. But I do. Like. A little bit of poetry. That's what I really started now. My name Yes, But you can call me. Bianca. It's my. Meadow name. Everybody calls me by that.

    I've been seriously considering going back to school but my program would be in health care which requires me to watch demonstrations and go to clinicals. I haven't made up my mind yet as I wanted to explore different careers with my state bureau for the blind first but I'm so worried I wouldn't be able to study successfully just listening to everything. I use windows magnifier and have it read articles and websites to me all the time but I often find it hard to just keep listening to the voice. I guess it does depend on how tired or interested I am in what is being read too but yeah. I really love videos like these because it can be hard to know what accomadations you need and I don't think I would've thought of them sending all materials in PDF format for example. Your Disabilities office also sounded pretty awesome.

    I stopped working towards a degree at the beginning of my vision loss. This was nearly 10 years ago.
    In the years since, I have no desire to return to college, but I certainly appreciate you making this video just in case I change my mind. 😉

    Hi Cayla, I am visiting your channel after Matt from B2B mentioned you, and he was right, you are so inspirational. I didn't know I am RP until age of 37, so all my schooling were hard and stressful without getting accommodations. Well, that was more than 20 years ago, so things are different now than then. I am glad you have better tools and options. Good luck with your study, I am sure you do just fine.

    Will my husband and I have gone through college. me with a visual impairment and him being totally blind. It's his second time around Papa, getting another degree, and he has been having a lot of trouble lately with publishers not cooperating with providing PDF of text books. Like you said, navigating on the platforms with a screen reader is really difficult. What they don't understand, is that just because something is readable by a screen reader doesn't make it accessible. Someone can climb the stairs of a 60 floor building, but they need to be physically fit and spend a lot of energy and time doing so. It's the same with content that is readable, not accessible. They need to make proverbial elevators on these platforms and follow section 508 and wcag web accessibility standards.
    Anyway, he also uses extra time because it takes longer to navigate when you are relying solely on a screen reader.
    I hope for the best for the rest of your education! I think it's awesome that you are getting your Masters, is it? Keep rocking it! ☺️ 👍

    Great video Kayla. Glad to have you back. Congratulations on finishing your first semester. What about putting one earbud in while you’re typing on your laptop and listening to lectures this way you can still use voiceover. That’s what I do. Also, my college is pretty good with accommodations but I wish they had an ad that the technology room because I don’t have a CCTV.

      You’re right. It can be distracting sometimes. Also I don’t envy your 45 minute presentation. I hate public speaking. Not least of which because like you said I’m always trying to memorize with on the PowerPoint. I haven’t actually tried using voice over read my note the one speaking though. Thanks for the idea.

    How I wish that all colleges and universities around the world have their own disability support offices. In the Philippines, no universities offer such kind of services. Fortunately, some of my professors were kind enough to give me some accommodations like extra time during tests, and electronic copies of the lesson materials. I was also able to barrow some assistive devices from the visually impaired training center in my area. Those things really helped me a lot to survive in college.

    Rcently came across your story. I'm planning on attending grad school and i looked into getting my masters in marriage and family therapy, but i am curious on the job outlook around individiuals who have low vision or are blind. Can you elaborate on your experience on grad school and possible share inight on, if you encounter individuals who work as LMFT with similar vision impairmennt.

    Hi Cayla I completed my BA via a traditional college setting and my MA completely online via Virginia Tech. One piece of AT I used was the software kurzewil pared with a scanner. Many times the books I needed were not available digitally, so I could scan these in and then have the software read it to me. Today, in my professional life I use the Divincci CCTV which has OCR technology and I have an Ipad I use Seeing AI on these two items help me get through work day to day.

    I’m legally blind I’m not even able or allowed to have a driver‘s license. I did one semester of community college and could not keep up with the reading material even with the accommodations by the time students would be on chapter 10 or 12 in a textbook I would still be on chapter 2 or three. This discouraged me and I dropped out . So how the hell do you navigate that and don’t tell me audiobooks because literally sitting down and listening to audiobooks takes even longer than reading. So what’s the solution huh

    • @ramblingmillennial1560

      Can you explain why you were so far behind? Were they books on tape and the reading speed was just super slow? If you have a digital version of a book or get a book turned into a PDF you can have a screenreader read it at whatever speed you want.

    thank you for your video, do you have any advice about talking to professors about accommodations? I have limited hand use and use dictation mostly. i really feel a bit embarrassed when i provide my accommodations letter to them and usually i don't elaborate on my condition. they seem understanding but i always feel like I'm behind in class. usually I'm the last person to post responses or my initial discussion post i have online classes only. also recently i had a flare up of my condition and wearing braces on both hands which now makes it painful to type sometimes i just want to give up on school. i get 2 extra days to turn in assignments but usually i am "late". I do turn them in within the one week grace period i just feel bad about always being the last to turn in assignments and i don't want them to think I'm a bad student

    • @CaylawithaC
      @CaylawithaC  4 роки тому +1

      Hi. Even though it may be uncomfortable, I think it is good to elaborate about your condition and how it impacts your schoolwork so they understand better. Having a discussion about it also helps to open the lines of communication for you to bring up any extra needs you may have or for them to ask you if there is anything else they can do to help you. For example, I explain to my professors that I can’t see when they write on the board, so I asked them if they can verbally say what they write or explain if they draw something. That’s not something that is explicitly stated in my accommodation letter but it’s still something important to address

    I graduated with my BA in May 2016 and am going back next semester to do some prerequisites for a masters program. We are in a new city and transportation is my biggest concern. Luckily, I can see well enough to ride a bike, but we are going to have to move when I start the grad program because it's too far for me to bike to. I bet ubering to and from school every day gets expensive...

      Lakenzie Crawford good luck in your program! I know that must be frustrating to have to move because of transportation concerns. Luckily my program is a hybrid program, so it’s half online and half in person, so I only have to go to campus one day a week.

    Hello, Cayla. Do you use audio books? I have a blind friend, and I would like him to be able to use an app to listen to audio books in his android phone, but the app he is using right now (Smart AudioBook Player) is just not good enough because even I can't navigate through the library with talk back on. Do you know of a better alternative to play audio books in Android?

      Balthazar Hawke Hi! Yes, I do listen to audiobooks. A great app is Audible, and they have tons and tons of audiobooks. You can also get and app called Bard through the library for the blind, and you can get free audiobooks. Both apps are accessible

      Lauren Flener what I did is have someone set up my tripod and chair for me to make sure the frame looked good, and then I leave my chair and tripod set up at all times so I can just put my phone on it when I’m ready to film and it’s already set up for me. And yes, I edit my videos with iMovie. It’s really easy to use and voiceover accessible

    I'm in the final semester of undergrad, finally! I'm going to jump on what Cayla said about good disability services people at your school. My first school, back in 09, had only one lady and I was one of about 3 blind students in the 30 years she'd worked there! It was sink or swim, I basically had to cobble together a lot of accommodations myself, including accessible textbooks. I got them through Learning Ally and those audio books SUCKED!!! I HATED them!!! I had no IDEA until I went to community college in 2015 that PDF texts were a thing. If they can, they get the files from a place called AccessText.org, or you can get some off Bookshare. I have my math text as a PDF, two of my texts through Bookshare, and I did have to purchase eBooks for two classes. Fortunately, my senior capstone has no texts, just articles online each week.
    Anyway, getting to Community college after so much time lost at that private 4-year was eye-opening. There was still one lady, but she was DAMN awesome and I hold massive admiration for her.
    Now, I've transfered to another 4-year, public this time, to finally finish a bachelor's degree in Psychology, (not my original major from the old 4-year, which was English). Again, I was blown away. My university is medium in size and has an AWESOME disability services team with 3accessible tech labs on campus, a small one in each library and one in disability services itself. there's a ton of people working there, including students. I have a work study job there in the accessible media department, which is AWESOME!
    Anyway, future freshman, do NOT make the same mistakes I did that have taken me years to reverse. Carefully consider not only your major, which can change later, but what school you want to go to and the disability services on offer there.

    • @CaylawithaC
      @CaylawithaC  5 років тому

      Jade Scribbler thanks for sharing! I’m glad you are now at a school that is very accommodating. Good luck with your psychology degree! That’s what I have my bachelors in
