Every time I see one of the videos from this tsunami I am emotionally conflicted, the event is the most fascinating thing I've ever seen and so I'm drawn to watch but at the same time I'm in horror and filled with deep sympathy by the tragedy and for the lives lost and broken. My heart breaks for everyone who went through this.

12 years for me
The last minute of this video is one of the most terrifying things I’ve ever seen.
Agreed. Look on the corner of the wall where it’s coming over, it doesn’t look real, black and smooth and calm. It’s crazy
The video starts in the same spot and 9 minutes later. Young lady always keep your eyes open.
There is another one of people rushing to climb a hill behind some buildings. One lady gets caught in the water and just about doesn't make it. That one too is very scary. To hear the people shouting at her to hurry but she can't go any faster 😢😢
@@cheryl5601 I just watched an interview with her, she survived. She said a roof ended up underneath her and carried her to safety.
He survived since the water never reached the platform where he stands and the foundation withstood the tsunami. Apparently he had just helped closing the water gates and found him self caught in the tsunami. The place is Momoishi-fishing port, Oirase-town in Aomori prefecture. The Water gate proved to be useless against stopping the tsunami, but it still bought people about 10 minutes as can be seen in the video
mansanraps Wow, cool. The power of that water is just amazing. That was a very sad day for Japan. Hope everything is finally getting better.
I remember watching this horrible tragedy unfolding in my living room on my made-in-Japan TV and feeling absolutely useless
as we watched people dying by their thousands from the comfort of our armchairs. A horrible day for everyone. 😖🥺☹😭
What a horrific experience.
@@ritalittle4838 It brings peace in my mind that a lot of people died that day. I don't like people.

This is one of a couple of video's that blows me away every time I watch. The man recording is oddly silent - in other vids, the witnesses are overcome with grief and shock - but this guy is quiet, doesn't say a word. The part that kills me every time is where the water over-tops the wall and after 15 to 20 seconds, the volume dramatically increases. And still, not a word from the guy.

When humans terrified and ran to save their lives, birds were seen searching for fishes, amazing nature.
This video is so fascinating. To actually see a tsunami coming in but I would be terrified to be that close to that much unbridled energy. He was one brave soul absolutely
Natur ? MONSTER !!!! 🌊 🤤
Not really that 'brave'....he's well above and out of danger.
I agree, not so much brave as just directed to man the water gates and instructed to remain and monitor the situation, from what I have read about this particular clip of the event. I have only seen one mild tsunami in my life when I happened to be in the Pacific Northwest of the US, even at about 1m it is still scary and wild at the same time. My father just happened to be on the beach in Acapulco, Mexico on July 28, 1957 when the 7.7 (8.1 max. recorded) uplift of the Tehuantepec seismic gap offshore occurred. He said that the rapid and extreme departure of the ocean was the most distinct indicator of just how severe things would get. He still remembers people yelling at curious/unaware/stupid people walking out onto the newly exposed seabed just before the 3.5m (11.5ft) waves hit just moments later. If you see the ocean leaving, head for higher ground.
In comparison this video was taken at Momoishi, Japan on the March 11, 2011 - showing the tsunami generated from a 7.9 offshore earthquake and uplift resulting in a wave height at this location of "only" 0.5m, however topography amplified that into the wall topping surge as the 0.5m crest was pushed and concentrated into the wide and shallow harbor. The town is also much further from the epicenter of the event and did not receive the maximum wave crest until nearly an hour after it happened. (58 minutes) The closest towns were impacted in only 6 minutes, not much time to get ready. These worst hit received 4.2m (13.75ft) wave crests, each amplified by their own local topography.
Acapulco rises abruptly from the shore so, even with a comparable event, the coastline experienced little wave penetration and most structures, even at the beach, were left dry.
For the official record of "affected coastal locations" from the Japan March 11, 2011, along with recorded wave height, event delay, etc. check this link.

@@crochunter35 it's so easy to comment on a tsunami UA-cam video then rather filming it live while it's unfolding. The person shooting the video was very close when the last wave came. Also how many of us would dare to film in that place, so he is definitely a brave soul
The fact he got any steady camera shots at all, and he did, is amazing. I'd shake.
Steady?
I’d shake too😂😂but I alway got a emergency joint for calming me down 😊but the scare factor would be intense
It’s fascinating to watch the 1st, 2nd and 3rd waves, each one higher than the last. It’s fortunate the structure he was standing on withstood the considerable force of the waves.
You have to wonder how many videos we've never seen from people who filmed until their luck ran out.
@@aluisious yeah, I was thinking the same thing. I’ve never in my life experienced this kind of natural disaster. It must make the inhabitants feel just helpless, which is probably obvious, but that really gets me. I grew up in the Midwest, smack in the middle of tornado alley. I had similar feelings after a tornado took out a farm house. It was always very sad.
What is amazing is that on Japan's hillside there is an ancient stone that warns people to not build their homes below the stone. Obviously each generation after did not heed the warning and built lower and lower into the flood zone.
Moral of the story : If you want to survive, be a cameraman.
Unless you are Irish cameraman Pierre Zakrzewski.
Yeah, tell that to the UA-camr 'King of Random'. Filmed his own death while paragliding.
It was a time when so many people didn't know the depth of the tragedy that was about to unfold. You can see it applied here. A few swells of water....and then the main surge. Amazing the things that happen on this planet. Horrific the effects upon those who find themselves in that wake.
I wish for this to never again happen to Japan!
The Thailand tsunamis had been less than a decade ago, I don’t think people were really naive by the time these ones happened, especially in Japan.
Never is a long time.
It has happened before and will again. There is an ancient stone on the hillside that warns people to not build their homes below the marker and each generation after started to forget and build below it. It will happen again, maybe not in our life time but they will forget again and in a few hundred years start building lower again.
@@AndrewZelenka I didn't know about that stone. That's incredible. I'll seek out images.

Great job dude. I felt that at the end. Courage isn't the absence of fear...
Absence of fear+intelligence ?

Courage isn't not being afraid. It's acting despite of the fear. That you do so even if you're afraid. That is having courage.
@@despicableme7081 it's the act of doing something thats scary too you.
I'm fascinated by these videos. I imagined tsunamis as giant waves wiping g out everything in their way. But the reality seems to be a relentless build up of water starting with a ripple but then becoming an irresistible mass of water higher and higher. I was looking at the concrete levy on the left thinking there's no way it can get that high, but I'm wrong again. The destruction is immense and one bad decision will cost you your life!
When I watch the different videos of this tsunami, I kept thinking of the word 'inexorable'. It means unable to stop or prevent. It just kept coming and nothing would have been able to stand in its way.
That was both fascinating and terrifying at the same time....wow !! Such a brave man ! I would like to think that I would/could be that brave to stay and film it ...but I reckon , in reality , I would run ....and run...
Good courage and excellent attention to the importance of recording the event.

When I watch these videos, I always think of them and the person warning the people through the P.A. sound system.
Почему то любопытные не слушали сигналы, а желали стоя чуть ли не у кромки воды все посмотреть и снять.
It's overwhelming. This is footage I have never seen. I cannot even imagine this. God above.
Thank you! No music, just the rushing of the sea.
That is truly impressive....the series of waves coming in, seeing the wave train coming in with each progressive wave the water got HIGHER ( I though I saw 4-5 diff sets of waves)...them BAM.....that last wave.
The man is so quiet.....either he really kept his head...or he was shocked into silence.
Very deceptive, just when it seems to stabilize, another set of waves hits. It may be that all his energy was centered on surviving.
It didn’t seem like the water could get any higher, yet that last wave hit with such power. Incredible, and humbling.
I wonder what happened next. It’s comforting to know the photographer survived.
The ringing phone was so sad.
Remember this was March it was snowing in some places not warm people were not dressed to be outdoors day and night for 3 days waiting for rescue with no food or water. It sucked.

Hello from 11 years future
Here you can appreciate that the tsunami is composed of about three waves that pile up on top of each other as they reach shore, overwhelming the wall. What a sad day. Amazing video.
Surges
The relentless advance of the water is truly terrifying!
Yeah, that was absolutely horrific. We all know waves that come and go, but this water just kept on coming without stopping.
The power of that thing is incredible when you think of the amount of water and distance it has to traverse and nothing dulls it force for 100s of kilometres, if you got caught in it you'd be crushed like an ant. People think of huge waves as being powerful because of there visible height but this is thousands of times more powerful in shear force
Yes
Indeed it was powerful in sheer force

courage only arises when needed.
This video shows a number of waves (3-4?) in the tsunami train, with the last being the highest. There may still have been others following this. It also appears that the sea receded prior to the arrival of the first wave as the tidal creek in the foreground at the beginning is empty.
Similar to the Banda Hace Tsunami... the beach disapears previously to the tsunami
@@ChuckyYouT that's why if you're ever at the beach and it recedes, RUN. I'm sure you know this, I just needed to say it 😢
Captivating and horrifying... can't imagine actually being there. Never underestimate the power of water. Prayers to all those lost in the biggest natural disaster in my lifetime. At least I hope for nothing bigger
This is something from which I cannot avert my eyes. Watching the sea rise up and swallow the land is mesmerizing and horrific.
This takes place mid way down the eastern coast of Aomori Prefecture the most northern Prefecture on the main island of Honshu, the waves seem to be coming in very close together giving little for one wave to recede, this suggests the ocean off the coastline of this particuliar area must be quite deep compared to a more shallow coastline off southern Miyagi Prefecture where the waves came in at a later period and large distances between the various waves, since tsunamis are suppose to travel quite fast over deep water it is why Aomori and Iwate(next one down)received the waves at an earlier time than Miyagi which was close to the epicenter,I know Iwate Prefecture has a much different coastline to Miyagi being mostly cliffs/hills with coastal valleys, bays and inlets making them very vulnerable, while Miyagi tends to be quite flat near the coastline.
Thank-you for that. My condolences to you for who you lost and to the thousands of others.
You know geography
was this individual live-streaming? or was this a recording he shared once safety was reached? he seems very comfortable & at peace with this powerful force; as if the ocean swallowing him would have been a noble parting for him. i understand the magnetic allure of the great pacific’s cool depths & a feeling of peaceful acceptance at the notion of my fate being at its mercy.
Just look at all that extra water riding on top of the surf at 01:21. The water column displacement caused by the undersea earthquake rupture has arrived. That additional water height could extend out thousands of yards, maybe even a few miles out back to the ocean. This big wave water runup goes far inland during a period of 10 to 20 minutes, before the water stops flowing inland and the sea retreats back to the ocean, only to repeat the process again, this time with a 2nd wave, which will likely be bigger and deeper on land that this first wave. Holy fuque I'm never going to the beach again
I’ve been watching a lot of the tsunami videos lately and I have to say this one was very very good thank you for not talking the sound of the water was amazing thank you for posting this👍
The last part gave me chills.
Wait to you see the one with the wave that tosses a trawler over a bridge that caught the two guys on the ground off guard. Of course the video ends right as the camera turns around and catches a nightmare come to reality.

In some ways you're probably luckier if you are closer to the harbour. Because there will be less debris in the water, to pound chunks out of the masonry. The force of the water is bad enough, but coupled with torpedoes (which is what the debris turns into) in the water, most building don't stand a chance.
Except when the water heads back to sea…then you’d get the debris.
That's makes good sense
@@jonathanmartin7046 How is your comment relevant to what she said? Just because there was the most destruction and death during this outflow, that doesn’t mean that the buildings closest to the harbor all fell down. Why are you being such a jerk just because she’s theorizing? Also, she was speaking generally, not just about this incident.
@@guymann4016 Not necessarily. A lot of the debris would probably get stuck on its way back out. The debris, cars, trucks, boats, etc would likely pile up and then get stuck behind buildings etc. especially since the water isn’t as strong when it goes back out so it wouldn’t be powerful enough to pull everything. By the time the water has gone all the way back to the harbor and reached the buildings, a lot of debris would have been filtered out.
@@sxxxxxlxxx because Linda's comment seems to suggest the better place to be at is close to harbor where there is little debris to act as torpedoes which can pulverize weak structures, in addition to the forces of water.
In contrast, Bob's comment suggests, or rather boldly states, most of the deaths and destruction occurred during outflow, which renders Linda's theory for survival as irrelevant. But clearly you knew of the connection and its relevance to original comment. Why would you question Bob's comment and call him a jerk all while being one yourself with your comments? Why else bring up the idea of the debris not fully making it back out to sea if not to recognize the relevance of such a situation which Bob brings up in his comment? Seems rather disingenuous on your part. Oh and I too can like my own comments.
That last wave just gives me anxiety watching it roll in and over the wall. One of the main reasons I will never live near sea level.
Interesting to see flock of birds fly in with the actual wave...very surreal

The best thing about a tsunami is that if you’re close to high ground, it’s remarkably easy to survive just by walking uphill for a minute or two. The amount of water needed to fill all of that space is hard even for a tsunami to gather.
If you’re not near high ground, you are for sure getting moved out of the way.
This video proves that water is in fact the second most destructive force on the planet. The first being, of course, my ass after eating spicy Mexican food.

Just shows that the first wave isn’t always the maximum height. Scary as hell
Damn is this dude alive? That end was fucking scary I wonder if the guy driving that white van survived. It look like the water caught up with him 😱
He died. When the tsunami happened, I was glued to the television watching for live coverage. From the helicopter, you can see the cars driving away and the flood quickly moving over the buildings and fields.. Covering the land as it traveled so quickly inward.
Only way we could've gotten this footage is if he survived. You can tell this was taken on camera and not a phone, so there would be no place for this footage to be saved if the guy died. The camera would've been lost to sea.
Looks like the van was abandoned. You can see it earlier in the video, and it hasnt moved

all of these videos make you reflect.
But what scares me the most, wasn't the incoming water surge.
Nope, it was the withdrawal of the water after. The water left way faster than the water came in.
There was so much water behind the wave at the end that the water surface acted like it was ignoring the fact that it was dumping over an edge. It just kept rolling up and down as if it was filling a tub. So much water so quickly, it couldn't overflow fast enough to keep the water from rising anyway.

What is so amazing about this type of footage is showing the design and extent of the concrete retaining walls, being overwhelmed to the amazement of onlookers .
Japan is accustomed to earthquakes and tsunamis and the authorities do everything possible to keep their citizens safe .But not only was this particular one unprecidented in it`s scope, but it was later found that the landmass on that side of the islands had sunk by several feet .
So the additional height of the new bulwarks was useless .
Of course, all this is with hindsight
The ending gave me goosebumps.
That guy in the white car at 4:20 has the real balls of steel cause there is no way out anymore at the end.
notice how the birds are flying in with the wave. almost as if they know that fish will get washed up and it's dinner time. Nature's tsunami warning.
Think it's more a case of they're trying to stay close to the shore, but it keeps moving further in. Don't forget you don't see that many birds out at sea. Which is why it's a good sign to see seagulls, it means you're close to land.
