It’s not slum, it’s an old residential area. Each building there is owned by one family. The rent there should be much cheaper than you can get from a modern apartment but the price of a property is much more expensive because they are detached houses in a city.

That's not a slum. Those are just old buildings. Most of China is old. Endless old houses. Some should be torn down, but it takes so much work to rebuild that many people can't be bothered.
