Very useful video. Thanks. After recent Ransomware attack on my TS230, I will not connect it to the Internet anymore.

Thanks for this video. It's very timely considering QNAP's proclivity to be vulnerable to ransomware.

THIS VIDEO is what it took for me to get my 453D set up with a local drive letter (iSCSI) so I can use Lightroom on the NAS. Thank you very much!
It was a bit of a challenge, though, since I had already set it up a week ago (noob) and had maxed out the pool. I was able to shrink it from the max size (10.89 TB on 12 TB drive) to 1988 GB (~2TB), leaving 8.59 TB. So now I have about 8.5 TB for LR and 1.9+ TB that can be used from outside.
I'll deal with accessing it from my phone or tablet another time.

Mate, did I find this video useful? Are you kidding? It was awesome and helped to fill in a lot of gaps I had with my Qnap 453BT3-8G! I'll actually be watching it again and I don't watch videos a second time if they are a waste of time! I need to rewatch it as it has so much great info in it! Thank you!!!

@@nascompares I'D BE HAPPY TO BECOME A SUPPORTER OF YOUR PATREON CHANNEL AS YOUR VIDS HAVE BECOME AMONG THE BEST ON UA-cam. CAN YOU SEND A LINK?
Also, My Nas was exchanged under warranty. Swapped over the drives and the new one booted fine and all was back to normal. However, I'm having trouble connecting remotely. I probably need to re-set-up remote access for Mac ac and iPhone but don't recall how to do this. I am still learning! Is QNAP remote access coming up on one of your videos or is there one you have already done? Also want to switch off/on the Nas remotely when I am away to save power and wear and tear. Is this wake up on Lan?

Don’t apologise for the video being lengthy, because this is a complex subject for we noobs who don’t need to be shackled permanently to the internet or a cloud. We just want a data storage method we can access when we need to. Thanks so much for taking all this trouble to help us out. 😀👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

And I thought I knew everything related to QNAP (I'm joking of course!)
But seriously, I never knew you can upload the firmware-file still zipped, into the QNAP.
A day lived, a day learned!
BTW, can you slightly increase the recording resolution please?
Somehow the horizontal lines for the characters are often missing (and/or not visible that well) that makes reading the texts in your recording very hard.
    Thanks!
BTW2: I would recommend to select the option "Secure Login", in case your pc has been compromised and your attacker can view the clear-text data over the wire.
(it will just make it a wee bit harder for the attacker)

Great video. When I ordered my TS877 they had preinstalled the drives. So this was excellent video. As Ive been thinking of reformation and starting again. I've had some issues with users home drives and them not being able to use the home folder. Qnap gave me instructions to fix this but have seen it come back a couple of times. Also a lot of the time i reboot it tells me my drive is not clean and I have to manual clean it. I particularly liked the iscsi. I used to have my onedrive connected via my nas. But windows 10 seemed to have some restrictions around doing this but think using the iscsi way will help me achieve this. I will give it a whirl. Looking forward to the next ones. I did watch most of it in 2x speed.

Glad you liked this one dude. I have to be honest, part 2 is a lot more general (maybe crank on X3-4 speed lol), as the differing types of user and their utility of a NAS becomes harder to pin down. Equally, the priority to keep the NAS 'offline' makes things need 'the long way round' occasionally. Cheers dude

This is just what I want. I'm not always connected to the Internet, so I'd like a storage solution that can work offline but also be there when I can get online. (Otherwise all I need is an external hard drive, right? 😛)

At 12:20 I found that setting a static IP address can create problems if your router decides to ignore that and have its DHCP server assign a different address. An IP address reservation in my router was the answer and is a pretty commonly recommended alternative to static IP addresses.

    • @VijayVenugopalanChettiar
      @VijayVenugopalanChettiar 3 роки тому

If can't reserve, you can limit the dhcp range (between say 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.199) and set static addresses outside that range.

Well, I have 3 different QNAP NAS devices at the office and they are all connected to the internet all the time. I have set up a lot of things for security, according to various videos (great videos from QNAP UK, etc.) and I have to say that I have no problems with any ransomware. Regarding Qlocker - what I saw information, QNAP released patches on 16. April and Qlocker started attacking from 22. April, so I guess this also helped me in not getting Qlocker. However, of course, I still have backups on separate USB discs ;-)

I have a QNAP TS-231 with 2x4TB Seagate Ironwolf drives. I am able to get up to the screen that has the NAS name, and it asks me to log on to complete the setup. The admin is not working and I have no password. Can I start over again so I can follow your instructions to get into it and build my volumns.

As someone with fairly good but by no means genius tech ability (I can learn to use most software, I could do some simple coding, I solve 95% of my parents tech issues), I consider getting a QNAP NAS over a Synology to be one of my biggest tech mistakes. It's too expensive for me to start over, but such a headache that I don't use it. I feel like I threw 1000s of dollars away and I'm totally bummed out. This is just a warning for anyone out there: unless you have a *very* specific reason, don't get sold thinking, "oh QNAP is the android/PC to Synology's Apple". I hope I'm wrong (as I try, again-again-again, to make this thing work as I wished it could), but in my honest opinion, its a product that is just so much worse. I'll update this if I find out I'm just a moron. Good luck y'all

Great video, BUT connecting the NAS directly to the PC is NOT what i was wanting to remove it from the internet. I would like you to please show how to leave it plugged into the router (so the whole home network can still access it) BUT inaccessible REMOTELY from outside the home network, i.e. via the external internet. A lot of people have had this question in your other videos especially since Qlocker, and i had the same question. Thanks.

a router can bock internet access to a specific device\ip address, ( i have no idea how safe this is, i am no professional, i had my qnap connected trough the internet and i got hit with the qlocker ransomware and also unfortunately i restarted my nas, so lost the ability to recover the password, this was before i blocked internet access!), i have now blocked internet access to the nas, you can search for your specific router manufacture on how to do this, for asus router you can watch this video ua-cam.com/video/VK1MWW8qAic/v-deo.html, hope this helps, also if someone who is a professional would comment on if this is a good way to do this or not

Using a nas on a local lan is relatively safe if:
      - If you have a decent router and have no ports open especially to the nas device (port forwarding). The main advantage of (Ipv4) NAT is outbound traffic is allowed (you want to surf the internet?), inbound traffic is denied by default unless you open specific ports pointing to the local IP of your device.
      - Do not use those Qnap or other gimmicks to connect your nas to the internet directly.
      - Disable Universal Plug and Pray (Upnp) on your router.
      - You can assign a fixed IP to your nas with no default gateway (if you have only one network segment)
      - Disable the IPv6 stuff on all your local machines and if possible on your router.
      - This will prevent you for most "attacks from the outside" but if one of your local machines is infected it can spread through the LAN and infecting all your local machines....
      - Update all your devices to the latest fw. security updates, including your smart fridge, thermostat, etc...
      - Have a decent backup strategy online, offline.

    • @VijayVenugopalanChettiar

In the network access page, limit the access to ip addresses within lan only. Then nothing from outside can connect to the nas even if it is plugged into the router

    hi, great video.
for 1 week, my qnap ts-873a, no longer wants to be seen on the network.
the router assigned it an ip address x.x.2.101, after I restarted the hardware (press 10 seconds restart button).
    in front of qnap:
the status light stays on green.
the LAN LED is orange, without blinking.
in the back, on lane 1, both LEDs are on and flashing.
any ideas on what I can do to see them again on the network?
    thank you

Don't want you NAS connected to the internet but still on your LAN? Easy... Give it a static IP and Network, but don't set the Gateway IP.. If it has no gateway, it can't route to the internet. No internet = No QLocker (Unless you have a PC thats infected by a RAT.. but then you have bigger problems)

You are still supporting a company that has no real-time tech support and no real concerns for their customer REALLY? They need to be held accountable for their lack of urgency to protect their client base.
