That car got me good! Wear a helmet kids - it'll save your life. ALSO go check out Keysight World: Innovate to checkout these researcher's full talks, I enjoyed them and I think you will too.
    Here's the link:
    USA folks: keysig.ht/RDZas2
Europe folks: keysig.ht/pWMP9P (we have different links so you can pick a time that works best for you)
There's more than just automotive topics, too, like wireless comms and digital health - some really fascinating talks!

It happened to my father and he was in a coma and had to learn to walk again. A guy took a.diabetic seizure and hit him going 120kmph. Back in the 70s. You were lucky.

Man, this is really interesting! The recognition tech involved is so much more complex than I realized.

    DBN be like:
    Reject machine learning
    embrace heuristics

Your accident appears similar to a scene from The Terminator. Are you certain you’re human? Hard to believe you walked away. Nice presentation.

Having the car running an ML network to sense the environment seems like doing it the hard way. Put the cameras on the buildings in cities that sense what's on the road and tells the cars nearby over wireless. Sensing what's in a static frame is way easier and can see around all the corners.

True, but for privacy and latency reasons I think having the sensors in the car is better.

There's definitely a lot of research into V2X networks that act on a system level, but at least initially we'll need onboard capabilities.

The easiest way to control vehicles with an automated system isn't to put the brain in the car, it's to attach the car to the brain's network. Wifi routers are already lining roads and highways at intersections and at traffic monitors. Wifi routers can detect the motion of anything near them. Metal, sending a signal, or just organic, it doesn't matter. You can map everything around a Wifi router.
So traffic can be directed by an "all seeing" brain that can be built into the infrastructure, very cheaply. And that brain doesn't need to be smart. It just has to have reliable eyes. Wifi routers are those reliable eyes. You can use them to extrapolate fine detail in an environment. Even if you are actively trying to shield yourself from RF signals the reflections, or lack thereof, can be tracked in real time.
You can count a human's digits using a wifi router in another room, and see exactly what they are doing with those digits... is what I am saying. You can use beam forming to point the router's antenna at a bag of chips, visualize the vibrations on the surface of the bag, and decode the words people are speaking in the room with the bag.
    We're doing "automation" all wrong.

At the end of the day throwing more tech at a problem that is caused by too much tech is just not the solution. Yes, as an engineer i find this stuff interesting as all hell, but as a driver first, i know that cellphones, endless sensors beeping, terrible sightlines, and distractions from screens inside the car are the root cause of these issues.

Physicist and engineer with one similarly hard collision with the car (head on in steep narrow street, incoming car switched lane and decided to park few feet from incoming me on a bike). From my engineering experience I don't see cars safely driving themselves in any condition where they are intermingled with humans and humans driving. Current state of this tech is way worse than you give it credit. See Consumer Reports videos of testing various ADAS solutions from many car makers that are actually on the streets right now... catastrophic results, absolutely unreliable (and drivers thinking they are assisted will definitely pay less attention). It can be done at enormous cost but who'd get a CIVIC for 500K$? The only self driving future is where humans are sparse, in the air. Low altitude, fully automated, drone like "aircars". Another option is eliminating humans and human driven vehicle from streets, impossible for decades if no a century.

This new self driving capabilities will have to be perfected in a country with no litigation system. China comes to mind.
American sue happy lawyers are rubbing their hands together while smiling and drooling.
Just think of all the law suits self driving accidents will bring? A few high profile accidents and no insurance company would insure you.
It's sad, because there are so many incompetent drivers throughout the world.

Banning mobile phones in traffic will dramatically reduce "human error".
Academically it's a great field to study but my teeth won't hurt when this technology will be able to replace a well trained driver.

And the coolest thing is, that cars can drive by their own, even without passengers, so they aren't polluting parking lots 23 hours a day anymore!
