The design of this plane commenced in the 1940s!!! Despite its futuristic looks it entered service in the 1950s to intercept & counteract soviet bombers . It is an antique plane so for those complaining that it does not turn as fast as the latest fighters remember this is a 64+ year old design and is being flown very sedately here.
And 100mph faster than the F35.
Thrust to weight is not the same thing as top speed. The J-35 Draken with the RM6C engine is actually a Mach 2+ plane.

The Draken was not only a superb aircraft but also had a futuristic and strange ans fascinating beauty.
Use to have them flying over my head, as i live in Jutland/Denmark, very close to one of our military bases. That was a sight to see and hear, i tell u, and even it was on a regular basis for us, i never got tired of watching these beautiful planes in the sky above. Cheers from Denmark

Besides the Gripen, Viggen, Rafale, F-22 Raptor, and the Avro Arrow, the J-35 Draken is still one of the best looking jets of today years after its first flight
Brings back memories. It served in the Danish airforce until 2000, first alongside the F-104 Starfighter, later the F-16 Fighting Falcon. An amusing anecdote: The F-104 was known as 'Den Flyvende Ligkiste', (The Flying Coffin). This plane was known as 'Det Svenske Jernfly', (The Swedish Ironplane). They were impossible to break. And lovely as well. Thanks for the upload.

Beautiful in deed. I may not be aware of this in the 60s when grown up as a kid under these Draken flights, living abut 10 km from one of these bases. But they indeed impress a small guy I was at that time. Once out in woodland with my father picking mushrooms, one Draken flight approached and turn right up in sky just on top of our heads. I felt like being hammered down in ground with with a bulldozer having its after burner pointed down at us. Supersonic as they where, when you heard them, it was too late, better look at the horizon. In this time of cold war in total Sweden had a fleet about 600 air force jet (including the other models), as big as the whole Soviet’s air force.
The Sweden tradition in designing air force dating back to 1912, with Baron Carl Cederström, who started first production of airplane in the city of Linköping, a place where Sweden still produces the modern jets as Viggen.

I'd a friend who manned a Bofors 57 mm Radar AA gun. The J35's small front area made it almost impossible for the radar to detect the J35 directly front on. An early stealth!

It have the most beautiful afterburner flame of all planes. I saw a black Danish J35 at an airshow in Trollhättan in the late eighties. The pilot didn't let of the throttle even for a second. It didn't look quite like in this show though. It was more like a white burning acetylen torch in back.

In my opinion , design this fighter is an interceptor that rely on high speed but bad at dogfight maneuvering. Its similir with Russian mig 31. But i was amazed with afterburner that burn on through out on 7 minute the flight
It was built to intercept Russian bombers at high altitude, but it turned out to be a great dogfighter at the time, note that this is a showing of the plane, not a display, it can turn much much faster, SwAFHF doesn't want things to break.
Compared to F-4 Phantom, F-104 Starfighter from the same era(developed in the 1950th) as Draken, Draken was not bad in dogfight
It was indeed designed as a fast high altetude interceptor. Draken entered service with Swedish Airforce 60 years ago, 1959.

She was clearly better than the English Electric Lightning at everything apart for the rate of climb, to altitude.
rate of climb to altitude is kind of important when you've been designed as a high altitude interceptor....

Quraishy Draken was designed in the same era(+60 years ago)as F-104 Starfighter and F-4 Phantom
Compared to those two its not a slow turner in dogfight.

It was purely an interceptor. Only the Danish version was outfitted in a ground attack role as well.

Very rigid flight in stable region with predictable path. Not like unstable region fly by wire. Can become easy target for missiles.Rafale kind of flight not found! While flying appears like modified British Hawk!

This is one of only two Draken's in flyable condition the J35J was phased out of the Swedish air force in 1998.
It's a historic aircraft so the pilot will not fly it to the edge as that put's too much strain on it also it entered service in 1959 and is contemporary with the Mig 21 !
