One of the reasons they used the speed up twitch effect so much was due to budget issues, they didn't have the greatest effects budget so rather than try to show the gore and after affects they used the speed/music/and twitching effect to help imply the danger and fear of what the person was feeling. Also, I remember a fan theory of two friends having to fight each other for the girl they both cheated with which was later a trap in Saw 3D. I can't remember what the trap was specifically but they both realized the girl wasn't worth it, stayed as bros and let her die. I believe the writers floated around the forums to get ideas and probably tried to fit Gordon in as a final twist in hopes to keep everyone happy.
Holy fuck this comment brought me back to the old UA-cam era; shitty editing and even worse quality did NOT get in the way of solid theories...granted it was pretty obvious when the video showed "Jigsaw" limping out of nowhere but still, fun as hell
The Stockholm syndrome thing is personally my favorite idea in the franchise, it makes it so interesting. They do have it in the earlier movies but just with Amanda, it just wasn't very widespread but, i still think they did a great job with this series. It's a very fun thing to watch with people who don't like scary movies imo, because they also do a lot of story with the detectives and it almost makes it like a really long episode of criminal minds.

Cutting metal is what a hacksaw is meant to do too. It just happens to work on humans as well. It's like John Wick needing to fill out some forms at the DMV with a pencil and being like "I can't possibly write with this!" before stabbing the clerk in the eye.
i believe there was a scene in saw 1 where they cut through a pipe for something that was cut because they thought that if the hacksaw cant cut the chains it would be ridiculous to cut a pipe, dont quote me tho i just heard about it
since you mentioned the cost of all this stuff, Kitten Arcader is doing this really fun series called "foot the bill" for the Saw movies. Basically researching and determining Jigsaws expenses. really cool stuff imo.
in saw 10, the trap where the guy just has to break his fingers in a basic way seems so incredibly tame vs the other ones like sawing your own leg off with a wire then sucking out the marrow
It's because that was just John's base idea In his head, seeing all of the things around him and just quickly thinking of a suitable trap for a thief, I'm sure given more time, and actual planning, the trap would have been more brutal
Yeah, I feel like it could've easily been made great with him having to hold down a botton to slowly snap each finger individually, Saw traps usually involve slow self inflicted pain in order to succeed. But I still like the base idea for the trap, especially the visual.
That intro felt very "early UA-cam video game reviewer"-esque. "RedLamaGamer, I have taken your iconic stone with googly eyes..." "Noooo not Dr Pebbles PhD!" "Yes, and unless you play Bubsy 3D, I will cast him into the comically bad VFX portal to Gamer Hell" That sort of thing.
Apparently the crew spent 4 total days working on the needle pit scene for Saw 2, because they had to replace every real metal tip with a harmless fake one. Then when it actually came time to shoot the scene, the crew accidentally dumped in one of the REAL sets of needles that they were using for close-up establishing shots and they had to spend a couple hours sifting through to find and remove the real ones.
@@truffeltroll6668 they replaced them with plastic tips so they would still be rigid but wouldn't be dangerous. Though I didn't hear how they did that stuck-in effect, I'd imagine it was a practical effect, probably false skin layered over her arms and legs that has the same prop needles already stuck - and her clothes probably had a similar treatment. I might be wrong there but there's a few behind-the-scenes videos on youtube if you want to hear it straight from the crew.
I think part of what makes Saw X so much better is that it's not trying to make Jigsaw into this "but what if he's right" character, but rather it humanized him. It does that by focusing on his hopes, the betrayal he feels, his relationship with Amanda, and by also pointing out his own hypocrisy on the "I'm not really killing people" thought process (the creatives of this movie explicitly wanted to call that out). It's taking a character that the previous movies tried to turn into this sort cult leader/martyr of a man, and just makes him an actual human being that has a very corrupt sense of justice and is kind of high off his own dogma. Another big plus is the fact that the filmmakers realized the police plotlines were holding them back, so they just don't have one for this film.
Ppl aren't that smart if stating things means you should believe it. They weren't humanizing him, he's human. Also This is how ppl get cult/church followers
I stopped watching Saw around… six? I would consider watching 10 tho if that’s where they took it. I feel like the writers wanted to show that Jigsaw was wrong pretty soon into the series- but it felt like they didn’t know what to do with that information. As a member of the audience- I wanted someone to call jigsaw out on his sh*t 🙄 it was so easy to shoot down his “arguments” but somehow no one ever did effectively.
@@OpalLeigh I think that movies backpedaled on trying to call out Kramer because the executives have decided that ' well people want more of the same' and so every movie was basically the same, with Jigsaw being this sort of almost walking plot device and everyone else just doing whatever. Even when he died nothing has really changed.
its funny because some of the traps you could easily escape if all the characters weren't entirely selfish and had common sense edit: didn't think this would get this many likes so thank you , keep up the good work bro

The comparison to “seven” actually blew my mind. I love both seven and the first saw movie, but I never realized how similar they really are. The plot, the characters, even the way it looks with everything being desaturated. Absolutely hilarious. Also never noticed how saw 4 is just recycling all the stuff from saw 1.
Yeah, after 5 is when I stopped watching them lol. When I was watching 4 though, I kept thinking "I've seen all of this already. This is just 1 again but worse. What the fuck. Like literally all of these scenes are just from the previous films. What the hell is happening? This could literally just all be made after the fact, none of it was set up or hinted at hardly at all. It's retcon... it's retcon all the way down" lmao And then 5 came along and my disappointment was boundless lmao I was so pissed at the end of that one that I never watched another Saw movie ever again 😂

my best friend’s uncle is Kevin Greutert (pronounced Gry-Durt), the guy who directed Saw 6, Saw 3D and the newer Saw movies. he told us that he didn’t really wanna direct more movies after Saw 3D, but he was desperate for work during COVID so he did it anyways. it’s fun knowing that i’m only 2 degrees of separation away from Rodrick Heffley from Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
Yeah I never understood the Hoffman hate myself. Agreed, he's by far the best thing about movies 4-7 (especially the ending of Saw V, which is one of my favourite scenes in the franchise). Amanda always got on my nerves with all her self-involved, holier-than-thou bullshit, but I always found Hoffman so entertaining, and he provided a decent counterbalance to Kramer. Was genuinely so happy to hear Costas whatshisname is back on board for Saw 11 next year, following his cameo in X.
He is the best character in these movies outside of Tobin Bell himself. The scene of him in Saw 6 with the FBI agents decoding his voice recordings is the only time I have felt real anxiety from watching a movie. I can't believe he seriously just glossed over the entire 6th movie when it's the best in the series in my opinion.
@@thequinlanshow3326 I wouldn't go that far re VI personally, I'd probably rank it 3rd or 4th best overall, but it's definitely the most underrated by a mile, never gets the love it deserves. I've always said that Kevin Greutert (or however you spell it) has had the most varied career as a Saw director, having made (imo at least) the best Saw movie (X), the worst Saw movie (3D) and the most underrated Saw movie (VI).
What I love about Saw 3 is that it kinda feels like Jigsaw just made a super embarrassing miscalculation with Jeff and his traps. Like he was super sure that Jeff would save those people, because he thinks the situation will like snap him out of it (I guess the ending contradicts that a little, but idk it’s funny whatever)
A certain kill counter has dubbed him "Slow mothafuking Jeff". And yea with that info in mind, rewatching the movie makes you scream "GO FASTER YOU GODDAMN IDIOT!!!"
Jigsaw didn't make any miscalculations, the games played out exactly how he anticipated. In fact, Jigsaw was so genius that even when someone didn't pass their test, their failure helped him.
1:00:36 The best part about the "buried alive by grain" was the shit falling from above. Like, it was actually kinda scary and tense, doing items one by one. Then it happens. It's like the prop guy got sick of the scene on camera and see said "DUCK IT! send it all!!" And an a avalanche of props comes raining down on them. I burst out with one of the heartiest laughs, in the theater, at that one 😂
The Saw movies (and their developers) have a weird obsession with trying to make Jigsaw out to NOT be a monstrous killer. The argument seems especially weak when some of the justifications for getting thrown into the meat maze are basically "you were mean to a mall santa, so sit on a razorwire santa chair"
And it's SO weird because it contradicts what they're saying behond the scenes because they have gone on record to say how much of a hypocrite he is and all that
The producers have said that that's kinda the point though no? That no, jigsaw is insane and is absolutely a murderer, but Kramer is just a massive hypocrite
No no nope, they absolutely do not, you're just not paying attention, John was _always_ a selfish piece of shit and a hypocrite with a god complex and his code was always incredibly lofty bullshit that was frequently subject to change and just him enacting vengeance, he did nothing for no one, even the apprentices who believed that he 'helped' them were never cured, he just preyed on traumatized people by traumatizing them further and roped them into an almost parent/child variety cycle of abuse where they can never measure up or get things right, which is pretty blatantly evidenced by what a mess Amanda is in Saw III and how she's self-harming (and we've seen how John treats cutters) because nothing about her was fixed and John is ultimately just a vengeful person looking to hurt others. Amanda and even Hoffman are shown to have more humanity to them. It is not their fault that you picked up on the obvious and how silly it sounds when he claims he's not a murderer, and yet you think it's the writers fucking up for writing the character well.
My takeaway from them was always that everybody, filmmakers and all characters in universe, know that he's a monstrous killer. The only people that don't think that are jigsaw himself and his followers. He's the one obsessed with calling himself a good guy and obviously you shouldn't take his word for it.
53:38 that cut from Cary Elwes doing a hard clap to the behind the scenes footage and the sound of his actual clap is the funniest thing in this entire video.
I also liked Saw 2, but I felt like it kinda borrowed from what a movie called Cube did (a bunch of strangers wake up in a place and it’s filled with traps and they have to work together to get out but get killed off one by one, especially as one turns on them). Really fantastic first effort from Vincenzo Natali, who hasn’t had the chance to do much (he made the delightfully fucked up movie Splice and… Haunter, with Abigail Breslin, which I remember being decent, as well as directing some of the best episodes of Hannibal, American Gods, Westworld, etc.) Anyway that whole premise was probably born out of Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None anyway, but yeah, Saw 2 = Cube. Still, it’s kinda my favorite genre of bunch of people in a single location dying one by one movies haha.
I still wonder if Jigsaw even knew the key went down the drain at this point. He said the key is in the tub then left immediately. Once he found out Amanda was making impossible tests, did he go back to check on him? Did he feel remorse?

A grain silo is actually pretty freaking terrifying. People get sucked in and suffocate fairly frequently - you can find videos of it happening to birds who landed to eat the grains.
It truly is, but having watched the full scene, it wasn’t as scary as I thought it would be. Maybe it’s the acting, or the cinematography, or something else. I know it’s scary in real life and in theory but the movie just sucked at executing it somehow in my opinion
Technically hes not named billy in the jigsaw franchise so it would make sense to say jigsaw and the only reason people think its billy is cus the fandom just says billy

Saw 3 is easily my favorite here. I like the premise, and the traps are gruesome. It also has a great score, primarily "Pig Juicer", which plays during the scene with the pig vats. That scene sticks with me, as when Jeff burned his son's toys, it made you feel an emotion that the previous 2 films did not make you feel. Also, I internally cheered when I saw where you ranked it. Respect. EDIT: See you next year when Saw 11 comes out!
Saw 3 is definitely underrated, but for me - I gotta put Saw 1 above it. Saw 1, Saw X, and Saw 3 are probably the top 3. Debatably replace X or 3 with 2.
Dr. Lawrence Gordon in the first movie was like the main character in Princess Bride. Which also had Andre the Giant as a character. I always hated that title bc it makes it sound like such a little girls movie and it's definitely not. Any hoot, I have derailed. My original point was I was surprised Ol' Paps here didn't mention that...
John Kramer himself said that money wasn’t an issue. The problem was that not only did an incompetent doctor/medical staff fuck up the X-ray labeling, but the insurance company denied him treatment because of how old he was and the probability of the cancer returning.
Love the backboard idea for rating the movies and the setting you’ve been shooting recently. Totally feels like a cool creepy talk show room but it feels more personal cuz it’s just your living room (or so I think)
Jesus Christ Nick please never stop editing this videos. In the literal first ten minutes I’ve heard: the grapefruit technique, the griddy, and a Fortnite spike trap. Top tier editor.
A cool saw movie idea: Seeing the killer develop. Seeing one or two murders popping up, but with extremely simple devices, then ramping up. It would also be cool to completely redo and keep the mystery back in it
watching this i realized how much in such a short time meat managed to capitalize on his sudden growth of popularity so well, going from a little known animator to doing jontron level skits on a second channel, nicely done chief.
22:28 The backstory in 4 fills out how he owns the buildings and what he was going to do with them. It's revealed when he's talking to his lawyer before and after he loses Gideon. Which is the name of the building he bought for the future project. 😉

Fun fact: the plans for Spiral were completely different. Chris Rock met some of the producers at a wedding and pitched his own ideas for a saw movie and that’s what ended up being the shitfest of Spiral lmao. I believe the plans for Spiral originally sounds similar to what they did for Saw X ironically
I also like that Jigsaw gives clues throughout the films, like when hes talking to Donnie Wahlberg and says "you will find your son SAFE and secure" then his son is found in a safe
The third movie with the judge being drowned by rotting pig guts is forever engraved into my mind. theres alot of horrific traps but that one will always stand out the most to me.
The screams of Leigh Whannell as his character was being trapped inside the bathroom at the end of the first Saw was allegedly so powerful and visceral, that the producer had to get out of the production room cause he was about to cry 😅

Precisely what I'm saying. They can try changing the word to "soften" it up a bit. At the end of the day, it means the same thing. Yet, they try to dilute the meaning of the words that aren't inherently bad words in the first place, in which case just use the original word.

Cutting metal is what a hacksaw is meant to do too. It just happens to work on humans as well. It's like John Wick needing to fill out some forms at the DMV with a pencil and being like "I can't possibly write with this!" before stabbing the clerk in the eye.
like especially since the pipes are rusty. wouldn't they be easier to cut through since they're rusted?
Thank you for your service Todd 🫡
i believe there was a scene in saw 1 where they cut through a pipe for something that was cut because they thought that if the hacksaw cant cut the chains it would be ridiculous to cut a pipe, dont quote me tho i just heard about it
They tried to film it but it would just shake the set.

in saw 10, the trap where the guy just has to break his fingers in a basic way seems so incredibly tame vs the other ones like sawing your own leg off with a wire then sucking out the marrow
My theory is that because it's all in John's head, he didn't immediately think up something severe enough before the guy saw him.
all that guy did was almost steal some jewelry… the people in the actual traps scammed multiple cancer patients and their families
One of the actresses from Saw 5 was my first girlfriend in primary school, she dumped me....

Do you know what they used for the tips?

As a member of the audience- I wanted someone to call jigsaw out on his sh*t 🙄 it was so easy to shoot down his “arguments” but somehow no one ever did effectively.
@@OpalLeigh I think that movies backpedaled on trying to call out Kramer because the executives have decided that ' well people want more of the same' and so every movie was basically the same, with Jigsaw being this sort of almost walking plot device and everyone else just doing whatever. my best friend’s uncle is Kevin Greutert (pronounced Gry-Durt), the guy who directed Saw 6, Saw 3D and the newer Saw movies. he told us that he didn’t really wanna direct more movies after Saw 3D, but he was desperate for work during COVID so he did it anyways. it’s fun knowing that i’m only 2 degrees of separation away from Rodrick Heffley from Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
The Hoffmanator isn’t for every one, but he made those middle movies for me
Yeah I never understood the Hoffman hate myself.

I have to say I like this format a LOT better than your other rankings. Starting from movie 1 and going down the list made it a lot more coherent.
Okay but can we talk about how solid that Jigsaw impression was... Down to the cadence even, good on you papa

I’d rather they go full blown evil mode for jigsaw, because you can’t really justify some of the horrible torture
I personally loved Saw 2 the most :)
I loved the traps, the intensity, the variety of characters, and the twist ending.
Me too! Tobin Bell killed it playing with Donny Wahlberg and actually trying to help him. Shawnee Smith is incredible also. This guy knows nothing...
I also liked Saw 2, but I felt like it kinda borrowed from what a movie called Cube did (a bunch of strangers wake up in a place and it’s filled with traps and they have to work together to get out but get killed off one by one, especially as one turns on them). Really fantastic first effort from Vincenzo Natali, who hasn’t had the chance to do much (he made the delightfully fucked up movie Splice and… Haunter, with Abigail Breslin, which I remember being decent, as well as directing some of the best episodes of Hannibal, American Gods, Westworld, etc.)
Anyway that whole premise was probably born out of Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None anyway, but yeah, Saw 2 = Cube. Still, it’s kinda my favorite genre of bunch of people in a single location dying one by one movies haha.
