Paddy on the Turnpike + Tommy's Tarbukas -- Fiddle

- Here is Paddy on the Turnpike and Tommy's Tarbukas! Tommy's Tarbukas was written by Alasdair Fraser, and it is one of the hardest fiddle tunes I've ever tried to play... It's one of those tunes that will tie your left hand in a knot, and the extra-large string crossings do not help! I've learned that if I plant as many fingers down ahead of time as I can, it helps prevent lots of squeaking---particularly with the B-part. Emphasizing the higher notes a bit also seemed to help. I hope that I still do the tune some justice! I love how Alasdair Fraser plays it so fluently on his CD, "The Road North" -- he makes it sound so easy!
I actually got to meet him several years ago! It was amazing to see him play live. He is a very nice person, and taught a group of us fiddlers a tune that he called the "The Celtic Society's Quickstep." I might make a video of that tune someday--it's really neat!
I learned Paddy on the Turnpike in G minor, but everyone at a jam session had no idea what I was playing until we bumped it up a whole-step to A minor.. oops. I had never heard it in A minor before! Is it much more common to play it in A minor? Well..when in G minor, I think it goes well with Tommy's Tarbukas, so here they are together -- I hope you like it! =)

You are amazing! I am 13 and I play some Scottish fiddle music and I have been going back and trying to learn some of these tunes. You are absolutely fabulous and this makes me want to keep playing and learn more fiddle music! Btw your swallow tail jig is 😍
So glad I found this...thank so very much.

Hi Katy!
Thanks a lot for being so inspiring, especially for my 9 y.o. kid that plays violin, and just started to play some "celtic" tunes, that are your experty. These two are some of his favourites. We'll keep following you. Keep going that way. XXX
Joao Mascarenhas Thank you so much! =) Celtic music is so much fun, and I hope that he has a great time learning some new tunes. These two are definitely some of my favorite tunes, too! Happy Fiddling! =)
SWEET. Very cool stuff.
Sounds great and inspiring! Takes me to the sea on a ship.
@Rumi Natanzi Hi Rumi! Thank you so much for your nice comment! I love Scottish music so much -- I think it's my favorite kind of Celtic-like music to play, although I love Irish, too! I hope you have fun learning lots of fiddle music! There's something so welcoming with fiddle music - I think that's why I like it so much! =) (Sorry I had to post this as a separate comment. I wish I could figure out why UA-cam won't let me directly reply to certain people. It makes me sad... =( )
Is beautiful
Great work on this one Katy. I can tell how difficult the Tarbukas part must be ... I can see the concentration in your expression. Both parts were some really top notch fiddling!
Absolutely amazing Katy 👌🏻 I love this tune so much and you play it so well !!! Very uplifting and moving !! Bravo !!!!!!!
The energy I needed this morning!!
Family life line,so good!
Heard something like this called “Congress Reel”. Your version is beautiful.

God bless you, cheers from Italy, daughter!

i believe we are created and music / arts proves a bit of that
LOVE!!!
It's soooo wunderful
I'm in love ! So awesome beyond the rhelm of words and totally outstanding !!!
You put all the proper chords in along with the drops and rolls that has me in awe of you're professionalism and unique talent and I hope one day I will have the opportunity to meet you with my Hohner Morino accordion to play a set of reels and strathbays with you !
Katy is precious in every way, but seriously folks ( Paddy on the Turnpike ? ), where do they dig up these names ? One wanders if they were quite sober when they worked these pieces of music out.
I wish I was half as good as you. I've been recovering from lots of different illnesses that kept me bed bound but you inspire me to pick up my fiddle again. Thank you. also you look like a mix between Emma Watson and another woman who helped me through a difficult time, you are an honest to god picture
WELL DONE!!!
I have a book called "Richard Lieberson's Old-Time Fiddle Tunes for Guitar" which has this G-minor version of Paddy! Playing the lead part in G-minor is easier on guitar, for sure, but playing backup guitar is easier in A-minor.
G minor's good with me. 😎🎻🎻🎻
That beautiful guitar with the yellow roses on your wall. Is it a classical nylon string guitar?
I bought one like that from infomercial I still have it. I don't care what they say. I love it.
it's Esteban.
Soft on the ear and hard on the foot. Lovely.
I also met Alasdair, dancing in and out of all the local shops in Beauly, near Inverness, with a whole long line of us playing his tune.
Sadly he passed away not long ago, leaving a big hole in the Scottish fiddle scene.
Duncan -- so cool that you're into Scottish music. I am sorry to hear that a great, obviously, "real deal" trad musician passed away. However, I don't think your "Alisdair" is the same one that is being referenced as the composer of "Tommy's Tarburka's." Alisdair Fraser is alive and well and was not long ago performing near my home town. Alisdair Fraser is a titan of Scottish fiddle players and is highly respected amongst trad players the world over. Please seize any chance you can to see him perform--something to tell your children/grandchildren about!
Happy Easter
Well done! You've got a beautiful tone, classical background for sure! :)
felefun Thank you! I have had some classical lessons, and I love both genres so much! It's all so much fun to play!
I love this song! I have all ready learned a few
Espectacular melodía.
Great job.
você tem um talento extraordinário, parabéns!
Very very well done.
Beautifully done!
awesome Katy! I hope you do a tutorial on this one, it rocks!!!! I've been playing and studying mostly classical and have just started to dabble in bluegrass and Irish reels. You did such a great job teaching on the Tam Lin tutorial,
LOE J I'd love to make a tutorial for this! I think I might make it into two separate tutorials - one for each tune! =) The Tam Lin tutorial was lots of fun to make, and these will probably be fun, too! Tommy's Tarbukas is quite a finger-twister, so I might start with a tutorial for Paddy on the Turnpike, first... I started learning fiddle from lots of Irish and Old Time tunes, but later I started taking lessons in high school which based around a lot of classical music. Both genres are so much fun! ^_^ I definitely want to get more into bluegrass, too, and I've been curiously looking at jazz~! I think Jazz would be really fun on the fiddle! Thank you for watching! =)
great playing very fine job..... and you have a beautiful smile
joeh4232 Thank you so much for watching and all of your nice comments! : D
Absolutely amazing
Great job hopefully you will do a tutorial for Tommy's Tarbukas. Keep up the good work
+Liam Kennedy Thank you, Liam! I made a tutorial for Tommy's Tarbukas (ua-cam.com/video/UGQ4CXJOhiA/v-deo.html). I was nervous making that tutorial since it's such a finger-twisting tune, but hopefully it helps a little! I think the trick to playing that tune at a faster tempo is keeping as many fingers down and ready to go as possible. I don't really go into playing it at a faster speed, but if it is practiced with the fingers down, it makes playing it faster a lot less strenuous on the left hand. =)
+Katy Adelson Hi... Yes I just realised that you have tutorial so will be looking at that thanks for the heads up.. Have fun Liam :D
Very nice!
it's so beautiful..
Awesome!
Nice playing and your beautiful

wow Amazing !!!
I play your videos when I’m playing Star Trek online
since finding your channel yesterday i've been watching all your video's and i must say i think your amazing. You make me want to break the fiddle out, i just never have the time these days to learn anything good on it. I'm preparing for my ABRSM grade 4 violin exam and i'm part of an amateur orchestra, so its all violin and classical for me, for the time being anyway :)
+wez turner Thank you for your comment! =) I used to play in an amateur orchestra, too! It was so much fun, but the conductor would pick some crazy pieces to play, like Mahler's 1st Symphony (which is amazing, but so hard!). I realized that I had a difficult time reading and playing the sheet music at that level.. =/ But, I have learned so much from classical music. I don't think I would be able to learn these kinds of fiddle tunes if I never had any of those classical music experiences.
Fiddle music is a fun, more social way to play music. ^_^ I really like the sense of equality that fiddle music tends to bring, especially in fiddle jams . It really doesn't matter how well you can play and it's all about having fun and enjoying the moment. When I step back and look at the classical and traditional music genres, both are nice in different ways. ^_^ I've learned that some of the most beautiful music can also be the simplest to play, and that a complicated part doesn't necessarily mean it's better...
I wish you all the best with your violin exam! =) I know how nerve wracking those can be, but it is worth it in the long run! All of the practicing that's needed, and those kinds of adrenaline-boosting experiences, really help playing and performing abilities! ^_^
+Katy Adelson thank you i'll do my best. To be honest i'm not to nervous for the 1st time ever. I found all the 3 pieces i picked rather easy, now i'm just doing a bit of scale work then i'm ready. I can't wait, i'll be halfway through my grades after this :D
+wez turner Yay! I'm glad that you feel prepared! : D That's always a great feeling. ^_^ I hope it goes well! =)
+Katy Adelson thank you katy :)
You're so awesome! I learned both of these tunes from your lessons, and have been playing them together long before I saw this video. (You can see me doing it at my channel) keep it up!
where can you get the sheet music for this song
funny....I had sent you a message that I like this tune and then I fond your video
Raymond Blacklock lol! Tommy's Tarbukas is a really neat tune! =) It reminds me a lot of Paddy on the Turnpike, so I tried to put them together. Alasdair writes really fun (but tricky) tunes! =)
Do you have the link to the sheet music ? This one and Tamlin I need to learn
Wonderful!! Is there anywhere we can get the score for your arrangement?
Can I use this in a video someday?
Could you tell me what does "Paddy on the turnpike" mean in English? Amazing performance 👍
While looking for this song, I just saw a version with English lyrics, by the Irish Rovers. Then I found Katy's wonderful version! Look it up on UA-cam and that might answer your question. 😀
Praise God from Whom all Blessing Flow!
Thank you for your nice comment and for listening! =)
Muito linda suas músicas, obrigado .
