    Evan, thanks dude for all these tutorials man. I used to study filmmaking way back in high school but then got discouraged after working in production for awhile. It was just too much heavy lifting, and I couldn't find the creativity in it at that time. These videos helped me get back into the fun side of what I initially thought was an inaccessible software. Now I'm making videos for the company I work for and learning AE at the same time. Cool stuff - thanks again.

    Hey Adam! YOU HAVE AMAZING TUTORIALS AND THANKS! I was wondering if you could do a tutorial over how in certain times in many videos there is a transition where something moves and behind it the next scene is found. Some examples could be someone walking and as he walks he takes the video with him as if he is masking the scene with the next scene.

    hey Evan, I just have question for you. I have watched your video about putting stuff behind things. I wonder if it's possible you can change your background in a video without using the green wall/background?(I don't know what that called).
    Like for example you just filming your video with your regular wall or whatever is on the background. then you want to change the background because it is not so appealing to the eyes. is that possible? and if you could add that to your list of tutorials to make?
    I would love to see how you do it. you're the only one I can rely on a good tutorials without making my brain bleed to death!

      To remove a background you isolate the subject matter. This can be done many ways. Most of them are not ideal or very time consuming. I may do a tutorial about it but I heavily advocate for people to plan around never doing it.

    Evan, you continue to provide me the best "holy shit" moments of learning. Quick question - I'm trying to implement this for a 2 line Lower Third but my expression skills are basically just what I've learned from you here. I was trying to find the best way to make L represent the longer of the two lines of text, but of course this is kinda weird since the top line would be a bigger font size, etc. So I've made them close in size, 40 and 50 to minimize that problem and used this expression... is there a better way to do this?
    temp1 = thisComp.layer("1ST LINE").text.sourceText
    temp2 = thisComp.layer("2ND LINE").text.sourceText
    if (temp1 > temp2){L = temp1.length;} else {L = temp2.length;}
    x =50 * (L * .9);
    [250+x, value[1]]

      Then you will need to do more math, and very specific math. But really if the font isn't mono spaced, there will be no consistency on which to base your maths, so it's all guess work at that point and you might as well start from scratch.

    Hey Evan! I'm a video editor from way up North and I wish I had found your tutorials years ago! Holy. Thanks for this, you have some great stuff on here. I am still working with CS6.5 and am looking to have text write on with a highlight box auto-animate on as my type 'types' onto the screen. Do you have a tutorial for this or some tips on how to do it? Thanks!

    • @ECAbrams
      @ECAbrams 6 років тому

      How far up North are we talking here? Like in Iqaluit? Unfortunately, cs6.5 is missing some key expressions that would really help, like the sourceRectAtTime(). You might try just linking a couple text layers to animate on at the same time, but make one of them a font of only squares. That might get you close?

    • @FirstFocusProduction
      @FirstFocusProduction 6 років тому

      Haha no, not that far North! St. John's, Newfoundland (www.newfoundlandlabrador.com/getting-here-and-around/interactive-map). I figured that was the case when your tutorial wasn't working for me. I ended up using the type-on animation preset and manually scaling a rectangle behind it keeping the anchor point pinned to the far left of the object. Made it look the part anyway. Time to spend money! Thanks for this and the great tips on here. Keep it coming

    Can we also put the lower third on two lines? So there's a self resizing heigth?

    • @ECAbrams
      @ECAbrams 9 років тому

      You can put things on as many lines as your heart desires. Unfortunately since this method looks at the number of characters in a text layer to compute the length the results would be less than ideal. Also that makes the method described in the tutorial very unsuitable for deriving a vertical change for a shape layer. I don't know off hand how that might work. It would take some research and may not be possible.

  • @alexbalcombe5065
    @alexbalcombe5065 9 років тому

    Great vid. Is there a way to re-size the amount of time a lower 3rd is displayed by simply changing the length of the L3rd clip in Premiere (or even the composition in AE), without cutting out the intro/outro like in Final Cut X/Motion?

    • @ECAbrams
      @ECAbrams 9 років тому

      you could time remap. Or design your motion so you can cut out the middle. If you're making something shorter (in time) you must either compress time or remove something from it. So you can either trim from the middle or speed up the whole thing.

    • @alexbalcombe5065
      @alexbalcombe5065 9 років тому

      ECAbrams Thanks for replying. The only problem with time remapping is that it can disrupt the speed of the motion, either making it too fast or too slow - and wouldn't you have to change framerates within the comp as well if you extended it? Trimming the middle could ruin any animation by creating a glitch/jump cut within the L3rd. Do you think it would be possible to create an expression within AE that keeps the timing of the L3rd motion the same, but alters the length the text is displayed when the clip length is altered? This is literally the only thing about Apple Motion I like that isn't easily available in AE!

  • @Blakk69
    @Blakk69 7 років тому

    One question...
    IS there a way to control MOTION of that title by the size of it? like, for example, whole lower third is sliding from the left side of the screen and right end of it stays in the same position, no matter how wide it is?

    • @ECAbrams
      @ECAbrams 7 років тому

      that sounds like you want to scale something and have the anchor point be located on one side? You can position the anchor point using the math of this expression if you like. Then the rest is up to some keyframes, or you could even have an expression on the scale if you like. Would that accomplish what you're after?

    • @Blakk69
      @Blakk69 7 років тому

      No, not really, imagine this lower third not sliding from the bottom of the screen but from the left side of the screen, this means I have to change position value according the size of the rectangle, to keep left offset same for any length of the text...

    • @ECAbrams
      @ECAbrams 7 років тому

      there is a newer tutorial that deals with using something called the sourceRectAtTime() expression. I think that might help you out with some of these issues. If you want the position to be governed by size that's one way to access that data you will need. As for using expressions to control position over time, there are few ways. Check out the creative cow forums to see some examples. That's maybe the best I can do in the space youtube provides for comments on here.

    • @ECAbrams
      @ECAbrams 4 роки тому +2

      So, this video is actually quite out of date now. If you're on the latest version of Ae you'll want to make use of the Essential Graphics panel to make your templates. And when it comes to resizing elements to text the sourceRectAtTime() expression is where you want to look. I hope that helps.

    What's the main difference between this and "sourceRecAtTime"? Thx

    • @ECAbrams
      @ECAbrams 7 років тому +1

      sourceRectAtTime is a property we access using the expressions. It's a newer property that isn't available in older versions of Ae. It also provides the exact dimension of a text or shape layer. this is a technique to accomplish a similar end goal that we might achieve with the sourceRectAtTime, should that not be available.

      Right, and for everyone who doesn't have the latest thing, they can keep on with this method recorded before the update. Also you can just apply the sourceRectAtTime to a shape layer's size instead of putting it in the text layer's source. I'm not totally sure why you would put expressions in the source property unless you wanted the text layer to display the result right?

      yeah! after watching your video, i think we can do it with just 3 simple effects. we can pre-compose our text,and duplicate it,and add box blur,fill,curves on the bottom one.and we can change text size,fonts and whatever you want,and the text always inside the rectangle.(the curves should adjust the alpha channel).Finally,my english is poor, sorry for that!

    • @ECAbrams
      @ECAbrams 9 років тому

      Kurumi Tokisaki Yes, that will indeed make a rectangle the exact same size as the text's bounding box. There are many ways to get to the same place. This tutorial is, on the surface, about creating templates that resize rectangles. But maybe there is some value for people looking to learn about expressions and making dynamic links to layer properties they may not have considered before. I think it was made with plexus. You can find that at aescripts

    • @codetrain020
      @codetrain020 9 років тому

      I tried the demo at rowbyte and I found out that the plexus will be gone when I move the camera I use even though the plexus will follow the camera.I'm keyframing the position of the plexus btw so that it can follow the camera. Is it normal to be like this? I wanted to use it for the kinetic typography I'm doing.

    • @evanabrams2735
      @evanabrams2735 9 років тому

      Ajax01 Well plexus is making a 3d particle simulation so they exist in 3d space with the camera. So when you move the camera to look somewhere else the particles will still be in the same place but your camera will be looking at something else. It's not only normal but expected.

    • @codetrain020
      @codetrain020 9 років тому

      So there is nothing I can do to make it follow then? I saw this lyric video by Sheppard (band) in their music which uses plexus and it seems like the plexus is following the camera where ever it goes. Here is the vid that I'm talking about: ua-cam.com/video/E-SeaCZE2TM/v-deo.html

      @ECAbrams 9 років тому

      Pedro Gomes well this tutorial was made in Adobe CC, which is a little newer than CS6. So the template option may not be there. But I can assure you that you can pick whip things in literally all versions of Ae. You just have to hold alt and click on things to activate the expression controls and then it'll be right there.

    Hello Mr. Abrams
    First of all, thanks to you and congratulations for your amazing tutorials, i'm learning tons of after effects because of it.
    I had a tinny little problem with that one, i'm copying the expression, but nothing happens when I change the text, or the values on it, only the last line is working. Eitherway, AE don't show any error message happening on the expression.
    I tried changing the source font, and text layer's name but still doing nothing, and I'm about to suicide, if you could help me please, you can stop a catastrophe (just kidding).
    Thanks a lot.

    • @kokimovidas

      +ECAbrams Yes, i named the text layer as "TEXT" exactly the same as you in the video but when i write something different in text layer, the shape layer doesn't change its size

      uncorrupted Did I? They are blue because I updated to the latest version of Ae. I actually have no control over the colour. It just is what the program wants it to be. I'm sure you could edit some of the code but that seems like a pain.

    Good tutorial but you lose way too much control over what you want to do with the project, you change the font and the whole project fails unless you change all the expressions, its a good concept but not practical, sure you could rig the expressions to a controller, you still lose too much control over complex animations.

    • @ECAbrams
      @ECAbrams 9 років тому +2

      Yup, those are the limitations I tried to speak to in the tutorial. Maybe I didn't communicate them as clearly as I thought but any automation falls apart when someone starts to play with the variables in the system. Either way, what's the more practical solution to the problem? Don't keep me in suspense here.
