Don't understand why we who pay monthly for Unity Pro should pay for installations. That was the idea of subscribing to Unity Pro. I will eventually look for another game engine that thinks long term.

good point; There are many issues different from the fees-threshold: 1) “mandatory” to be connected to the internet to work on Unity editor (independently that one is online most of the time). 2) unity plus is eliminated and most of the (indie) game developers pay that subscription due to getting rid of the splash unity screen, Unity (indirectly) obligates indie game developers to buy Unity pro paying $399 (which It´s ok) to not less than $2000. 3) one specific indie developer with one license or seat might pay fees for unity installation by each computer that she/he can own for example a desktop AND one laptop. Independently of some few fixing policies from Unity, one must not to wait for a "complete" or "full picture" information from Unity because it is something that Unity is not able to do inherently; this not for the current Unity case but other issues in the past.

This is a hard setback for our studio team. 2 years of progress across 2 games, now we have to jump ship and learn a completely new game engine. We decided on Godot, trying to soak up all the tutorials we can. What a mess Unity has caused...

People that run Unity gave us all very clear and indisputable information. Information is: "If needed, we will bleed you dry". They can walk this 100% back, but you know, in back of your head, that they can snap at any time. Building your future on something that proved itself to be unstable is not smart decision. Godot. You can see it as a step back, I see it as a step forward. It is a fresh new country and opportunities abound! Imagine being one of the few Godot educators in an exploding demand market, for example. Or tutorial series. Imagine being the first to create XY type plugin for their upcoming asset store. Imagine.... All those opportunities which have been already taken with an engine as old and as overpopulated with experienced devs as Unity. Really, the whole scene was becoming a bit stale and decadent. Now I am coming to conclusion that this whole thing was needed to shake things up and propel the industry forward on healthier foundations - a bit like how Autodesk's greedy arrogance gave birth to the wonderful open-source tool that is Blender, which in turn transformed the whole creative 3D industry for the better.

Such a shame because while I have despised Unity leadership for years because of their non game development focus, I love working in the engine. Meanwhile it's the game devs that fund their ridiculously expensive forays into industries that do not directly benefit the game devs funding it.

The Unity users are just as important to the Unity ecosystem as the team making the engine. Glad you’re sticking with it at least until we know more. For many who work on smaller games, like game jams or super simple mobile games, going to another engine isn't a problem. But for many of us, we depend on Unity and its ecosystem. Picking the right engine for the job is always what we should be doing, and we also shouldn't discount an engine that for all intents and purposes is still very good and improving a lot every year. As independents, we make our own business decisions, and regardless of what engine you choose you have to factor in license costs and revenue sharing, with few exceptions.

As far as trusting Unity goes? We can trust no company. Epic is being dev friendly until they are not, for some reason, we have to thank all the whales that spend a lot of money on Fortnite but when that ceases to exist we better watch our backs too.
The future is open source, but Godot is not even near being ready for a massive public of devs.

I put only 2 years in learning Unity and c#, not much but sill hurts. For me all that retroactive install fees sounded really insane because of my background in economics/finance so i've installed UE, played with templates for 15 min and that's it for now. News coming and i hope it will be something good, lastest i heard - 4% fee after 1m revenue sounds fair enough (they also need a source of income, millions of indies that use basic version generate 0$ of income for Unity as a company directly(Unity ads i don't count here) .. and team(devs) that makes Unity Engine for us also want to live good enough/pay their bills and have fair payment for the job they do and not being layed off because lack of income at company (but not poor managemet -they suck)). Anyways -we'll see when it will come. I like Unity for it's universal approach - UE is more for 3d, Godot is more 2d and very basic 3d right now so there's no good alternative engine right now.. and who will evolve faster only time will show. Maybe none maybe both..

I was reading up about some of the IronSource merger stuff at the board and share level on Twitter yesterday, and between the other options Riccitiello had on the table and the board presence the IS folks have now, I think the writing's on the wall. Just crossing my fingers they don't turn it into full-on malware, though given gamedevs' level of self-advocacy, that might be a long-term good to help regulate this kind of c-suite behavior.
For me, I'm most of the way through the controls and physics on a small project I really mean to use to focus on modeling and rigging, so I plan to finish it out, but after that I'll likely jump. Kind of hoping this lights a fire under the Blender community's a***s to push their engine to the forefront, though Godot seems reasonable as an option.
Either way, you've got my support. You're the only one I've seen get so consistently technical and stay comprehensible, and I have no doubt you'll be that way regradless of your chosen environment. G_dspeed!

I can see the stress and concern on your face, I'm sorry you're going through this man, it's reflective of what so many other developers are feeling right now too. Regardless it's probably a good idea to be semi-knowlegable in Unreal and/or Godot.

What I find interesting, maybe even entertaining after this mess is over, is the fact that my wife said that I have been making the same faces as you, over this past week in regards to anything Unity related. I, well, We (Apophis Software) share in your frustrations over this development. One of our first game engine "looks" was at Godot. As Godot has a C# version, it's cross/multiplatform, and out of the box, it's faster than Unity. Loading up your project, running your project, etc., are all faster. Also, we found a package for Godot that allows us to import (with a good deal of "it just works") unity assets. So there is that, too. While we have just started delving into Godot, I can say that everyone here says that it looks promising.
Good luck on your journey and in handling this!

On the flipside this could also be a good thing. Speaking for myself at least, being forced out of my comfort zone and having to learn a new engine will be 100% worth it.

I am a visual artist, my main discipline is Fine Art. I started using Unity around late 2019 to teach myself virtual galleries and virtual artist portfolio creation during the lock-downs. Unity has been an excellent learning experience, but, as I was learning Unity it became clear to me that only having one game engine to develop my work is a mistake. I learnt how to use Unreal and more recently Godot as well - I only learn what I need to get the project done so there is a creative and functional overlap with each engine - keeping all the eggs in one basket can break everything if the basket fails.
This issue won't affect me as I don't sell my content and won't ever touch the financial threshold to activate the fee ....it seems there is a hysteria about this, like you say, not all the information is out there so to make a fully informed decision is difficult. But, if it's true, having fees for installs on games made years ago screams of a desperate attempt at money grabbing...that in itself would be a red flag and a motivational influence to develop on different engines - let's hope the other engines don't adopt the same business model - corporations are only interested in the dollar and are not our friends.

good point; not for you but for all of us, however it is good to mention that having critical thinking does not mean to react on emotion (it is a victimization position to those who complain), necessarily. complaining does not mean that one has to change the use of unity and it does not mean not to respect and to understand those who want to change (every person has diverse situations). One thing is staying with Unity as a technical engine and another point is staying with Unity as a company in the administrative and governance framework. On the other hand, without the indie game developers pressure Unity should not have softened some measures as regards e.g, not installs fees as for webgl-streaming games. Also in this video is said Incomplete information?. The CEO and others selling shares before making public the new unity policies; There are many issues different from the fees-threshold: 1) “mandatory” to be connected to the internet to work on Unity editor (independently that one is online most of the time).

I'm under NDA on the details of this so yes I *DO* have some biases and business relationships to disclose, but I've been using unity for over a decade before all that, and with my one man studio indie dev hat back on, all I can say is that I'm pleasantly surprised by the new proposed terms and just hope they finalize what was shown to me and go public ASAP. If the original terms were a 5/10, and the initial botched runtime fee was a 1/10, I am rating the new terms, in a vacuum, 8.5/10. This is not over and it won't undo all the damage. But the terms by themselves are attractive. If they had led with these terms, I think most people would have thought it was good news.. I hope that can provide someone with some shred of hope to hang onto for the next few days.

Not to put on my tin foil hat or worry about the 5G nanobots in my veins, but the idea that they can track installs definitely gets folks nervous. Seems like either a pretty wild claim or something not good is or was going to work it's way into Unity builds.

@@OneWheelStudio I have no inside info on this point, so the following comment is only my interpretation of the public comms: IMO the earliest responses sounded like 'everything has to count because we can't tell the difference' and that is very very telling and almost certainly true. Ironically when they were forced to confront the severe shortcomings of that and start carving out the necessary exceptions In the panicked second wave of comms, 'wildly' intrusive software became necessary to make good on promises that I presumably no engineer or lawyer ever signed off on. Then silence, as they shut down the counter productive comms and come up with a plan that no longer requires the keeping of these impossible promises. So far, everything I've seen is consistent with this narrative, and if correct, it will hopefully turn out that no intrusive tracking has been, or will need to be, developed. I am distraught at the wasted time, so I cannot imagine the weight of this for those who have shipped products or are currently in a development cycle. I now view Unity, its CEO, and the slew of glorified malware company executives that bought their way onto Unity's board since the IPO, as an existential threat to the video game as an art form.

Only way I can do it in this period of time is by using the tool I know - Unity. Even though it's a new project, going to new engine would extend this time by 2x, maybe even 3x longer.
Let's be honest, new price model will not affect most of small devs working on desktop games. But I am worried about future of my game because Unity is hated now. Not only by developers, literally by everyone. People who have nothing to do with gaming industry have negative opinion on Unity. Gamers thinks any Unity game installs malware on your PC. So I am worried, that because of using this engine, I will get some hate for doing so....

It's already easy to lose the idea of the game and how it'd be fun when working deep in the technical details, having to do it even more would just put it even further out of scope. While I'm waiting few more days to see how all of this unfold, I already started evaluating other engines and ATM I'm leaning towards Godot for its C# integration, Unity asset portability, easy lightweight fast editor. It would be ideal if you slowly start trying to do the same and eventually create some video on the journey that can help us technically as you are a super teacher.

What you have to consider is that Unity is completely overleveraged. They're 3 billion dollars in debt. They over-paid for IronSource which cost Unity 4 billion dollars. Their P/E is in the negative which means they're bleeding money. And their total liabilities are 4 billion dollars. In 2021, Unity had no debt and 1.5 billion dollars in revenue. In just two years, John Riccitiello did a total pump-n-dump.

Subscribed. I’m glad to see you actually putting thought into this and not simply joining the panicked chorus of doomsayers. I really hope Unity listens to the community and rights this ship. Hopefully they’ve learned from this fiasco.

You are devs. Quit paying Unity to screw you over and build your own software solutions. Whether that is open source or some proprietary commercial product is up to you.

ChatGPT can port the code over for your current project and save you 90% of that work. Other software exists to port over most of the rest of it in seconds to Unreal or Godot. Yeah, it is extra work. But if you are not willing to even spend one day with a port attempt to see how much work is left, you are hurting yourself from a position of ignorance and fear. Find out how much can be done automatically and then make a decision to stay or not.
