4:14 to be fair, the cat phone is not so much designed to solve doom scrolling as it is to just be a reliable device for use in places like construction sites.
The keypad on mine stopped working after 6 months of light texting, though... And it ate background data even though I had it off, so that cost me hundreds of dollars because I never checked my bill. I be bitter.
Nokia Symbian S60 phones were NOT "feature phones" though, they were 1st gen smartphones. They had all the bells and whistles of a smartphone except touch screen. Such as an app store and the ability to sideload whatever apps you pleased. I even had a Garmin GPS app which made my phone function exactly like a stand alone Garmin GPS navigator. "Feature phones" could not do things like that obviously.
That's completely logical, back then the Finnish Nokia with their R&D made them, now a chinese company makes them via licensing. Also back then they used the best technology possible for the time, now they deliberately deliver a worse experience to play the "detox" card.

The reason why Rogers still has their 850Mhz 2G band up is because they still rely on it for Interac terminals, traffic lights, buses, etc. These devices all use the 2G frequency because of their range, so that's why Rogers never took down their 2G towers. Strange I know.
KaiOs is aimed at developing markets to people who want to get online but can't afford to buy a smartphone. That's why KaiOs has Google, Facebook, WhatsApp, UA-cam, etc pre-installed (btw KaiOs devices also tend support 4G for this reason) and the devices it runs generally tend to be quite cheap for the same reason. It's exactly the opposite of what you're looking for because it's market is people whose needs are completely different. KaiOs has been very successful in it's targeted markets.
I guarantee you that in developing markets, people who can't afford a new smartphone will be using an old used one by this point.
Where I'm from, people just buy budget Chinese smartphones many of which are cheaper and pack more features than average KaiOS phone.

@@WildVoltorbI should add to what has been said above that old smartphones will lack software support and have bad battery life, and non-existent customer + repair support would also be a problem. You can't make smartphones for much cheaper either, since they need the minimum specs to run android and require a large touchscreen display and battery.
Great video. As a zoomer who's had a longing for the phones my parents used all the way up to mid 2010s, the difference between the classics and the modern ones is shocking. My father had a krzr k3 and my mother had an X2-00. I've personally gone through a RAZR V3i, W850i and my mother's X2-00. Old feature phones OS are so charming and snappy, surprisingly customizable and a very cheap hobby to follow (I have spent less than 70 euros total), wholly unlike the locked down kinder surprise toys that HMD sells now, with even the shittiest product of theirs being 50 bucks! (my 150 from 2015 cost 20 euros iirc).

@@DoughnutMasterStudios I live in Bulgaria and we do still have 2G. Honestly there's many places where the only signal you get is 2G so if it gets shut off these places will have no reception. Hopefully it is cheaper to continue supporting 2G than placing more antennas to have better 4G/5G signal coverage.

Agree 100%. My flatmate still uses an E72 I gave her, the camera is a 5mp auto-focus unit which produces reasonably good photos, a little washed-out but much better than a VGA camera. All the E-class phones are light-years ahead of modern feature phones, even the E63 with its 2mp camera and plastic chassis. This is something I never understood with the new feature phones, but as martin0499 points out, they're trying to deliver a "worse" experience. Doesn't have to be as bad as it is though!
E72 is a well built all rounder of its time!
Nokia E phones are not feature phones though. They are smartphones that run fully functional Symbian OS

And while S60 smartphones may have had a full suite of functioning apps when released, nowadays they will be restricted to basic functions like talk, text and camera. Cheers
You spoke out my mind. The modern feature phones are nothing when compared to the older ones (before nokia was bought by microsoft). I used to have a nokia 2700 which was my first camera phone. Could download games, watch youtube videos, copy, cut text on that device. Still miss it. Thinking about buying a refurbished one.
Nokia wasn't bought by Microsoft. They sold off their mobile phone division to Microsoft. Nokia continues to exist today as an independent network and tech company

if more people use feature phone then they'll have to get better as of right now phone manufactures don't have any reason to make them more than just phones as it would cost ineffective to produce a feature phone that has a lot of features
Problem is people are now forced to use things such as QR code, bank app, E-wallet, E-hailing and digital roadtax (like my country did it). If features Phone has all of that, some people especial older gen X and Y will gladly move to that.
And the most important app for develop country is messenger app. Nobody want to pay 5 cent per SMS anymore. They can texting 1000 message with the same cost using mobile data
Good stuff. I’ve been on a TCL Flip for almost 2 years now and I flashed the software with something that has no web browsers or apps. Works fine, but it was a pain. It’s super cool to see people using these devices as a means to make technology work for them, not the other way around. Keep up the good work! Subbed

Im agree with all you said in this video. I prefer to use the old feature phone than buying a new modern one. Old feature phones are more usable than the newer models and also smaller than the bulky feature phones released this year
The bulkiness of smartphones is one thing that drove me back to old school phones. I had to get a dumbphone because the features were all too bulky.

I bought a Nokia 2630 in 2007. It was slim and has a very good VGA camera after that i bought a Nokia 6303i in 2010. It didn't have the best camera but still 100 times better today feature phones. Back in the day, you could do a lot of things on that symbian os. I even watched UA-cam videos on symybian internet browser and uvi store had some decent apps. Badly miss those days.
I got a Nokia 2680 slide in April 2008 and repalced it with a Nokia 6303i classic in December 2010. Pretty good phones honestly. The 2680 was used until a year ago by my grandma with the original battery that held a few days charge still. The 6303i I used a few months ago as my main phone for a day just to try it, remmeber what it used to be like and I enjoyed it. It even works perefectly fine with a 64GB SD card! Wich was honestly impressive, can't format it, but if it's formated elsewhere it works without issues. Back in the day I never used internet on my phones since it was pretty expensive, but when I used the 6303i recently I did try internet and it was still surprisingly usable.
Some of the phones you showed off around the 5:52 mark are actually considered to be smart phones. The beginning of smart phones happened all the way back in 1996 with the introduction of the Nokia 9000. Even prior to that, there was the interesting but ultimately doomed Siemens which had a touch screen interface. Touch screen =\= smart phone!
every time i hear something about 2g and 3g shutting down in the usa/canada i cant help but think how crazy the carriers must be to do that like holy fuck
They are switching them of because they are not used and same area is covered with newer, faster and more efficient network like 4g and 5g.
Why should they keep them ?
Soon we will ditch sim cards as well.
3G as of now is completely shut down in Germany as well, but 2G will be kept operational
@harisalic2568 It is just a matter of time. When 5g will have full coverage over 2g and the user base will fall below, they will abandon it as well. The same happened with an analogue television, nobody believed that it will happen this fast.

I would love a feature phone and ditch my iPhone but WiFi tethering and Signal is an absolute must!
I've got a Sony Ericsson Cedar that I wish I could keep using, but it sounds like I won't have a choice after 2024 here in Canada. If anybody finds a great 4G replacement, I'd love to know about it. Although... if I had bought my Sony Ericsson new back then, I would've been paying $350-$400 in today's dollars after adjusting for inflation, and I have to accept that that kind of money just isn't flowing into feature phone development anymore. The teams making these phones now are running on much tighter budgets.
Yeah, Greenheart series was one of the last before SE just license their brand to Sagem, never realized it was the sign to come. I don't see any real demand for feature phone right now with KaiOS being stuck at where they are while proper Android is less than 60 bucks
as a nokia 2780 owner, I can say the newer Nokia mobile division is nothing like how they used to be. I hate how it feels like a toy, is giant for no reason, and the os is worse than ones they already had 20 years ago. As bad as it is though, I really don't want to go back to my smartphone (for all the reasons why they're awful). It's sad they shutdown 2G/3G too, I couldn't care less about 5G and we all know it's just for them to make more money w/ more expensive phones & cell plans (& to force people to upgrade). All I want is for cell companies to port their old phones w/ 4G, but we know that isn't going to happen unfortunately. There basically is nothing on the market rn that is a good quality cellphone which is so sad, but hopefully someone catches on and creates one
Sometimes I wonder whether HMD Global (the current company who owns the rights to use the Nokia brand) has access to the source code of Series 40 or Symbian OS of the old days. It would be so cool to have Series 40 with LTE, but I'm guessing either they don't have the rights to use it, it's incompatible with modern chips, or thought it would be easier to write a new OS from scratch (S30+), which is a shame :/
I wish they would at least keep 2G alive in North America, apperantly 2G is very alive in Europe (as a backup I assume?)

@@DoughnutMasterStudiosS30+ is not created by HMD, its actually created by mediatek for their features Phone and they give to Nokia back in 2013. When HMD got license, they add 3G and later 4G. Googling around, someone said mediatek stop updating S30+ in 2016, before that, some of this OS can ran on J2ME apps but because of mediatek no longer update it, J2ME were abandon and Even you have Phone that have S30+ J2ME, it can't browse website because outdated web certification and didn't support HTTPS

They weren't better. in 2009 phones like blackberry bold 9320 or nokia E52 were classified as smartphones. They just had a keyboard and not a touchscreen, that doesn't mean they were only feature phones.

Cat S22 does have android and touch screen, but it also has very small screes that is useless for anything multimedia related. But, it does give nice modern features like ability to use spotify / yt music and whatsapp and you still have google maps if you really need them, plus you can use it in car via android auto. Thing that prevents you from doomscrolling is small screen. So, good clean android is not bad OS since you get most usable stuff, but distracting stuff works and looks awful. Old phones did have better cameras, but ones with good cameras weren't really cheap. My last regular mobile phone before switching to smartphones was SE C902 Cybershot and that phone was like 350E back in late 2008, which is equivalent to 500E today. And for 500e today, you can buy very good midrange smartphone. I doubt that someone would cash out 4-500E today for dumbphone. And there were even pricier phones back in the day. That same year Nokia released 8800 Carbon, for 840E, or 1200E in todays money. Remember, that was the year Iphone 3G came out and it was cheaper than that Nokia.
Kai works really well on my Alcatel. What it won't do is support more than 100 music files, even though more will fit on the transflash card. I ended up not using the phone so much for music. The reception and call quality are really good.
We just had a 3G shutdown here in southern Colorado. I gave up my little Samsung for a Nokia 4G flip. I don't have a data plan, so I turned off Wifi, and it functions like an old flip phone. I have my trusty old computer to take care of the rest of my communication needs.
They should just copy some Nokia from 2007 and sell it again, today dumb phones are totaly useless.

I've been using "feature phones" for 4 years now, and the technological regression since my high school days is almost astounding. Can nobody make a t9 keypad that works for more than a few months?
I had the Nokia 2700 Classic. It is probably the most fun I've ever had with a piece of tech. I learned how to create themes for it, I installed tons of .jar games on it. Man, those were the days.
Modern internet changed phones FOREVER. That's why old feature phones are set aside.

Nice video, I wish old 2G phones were still usable without hassles and lack of service. 2G still exists in the US but I don't pick it up where I am. It's nice that Canada has pretty good support for 2G phones despite the planned shutdowns.
Also, modern dumbphones are too expensive for no reason. $150 in the 2000s bought high end phones such as the Sony Ericsson K800, while that is the price of a decent new dumbphone nowadays.
So, strange story for the Nokia 6016i: I acquired some from eBay (like around 2022) and when I powered them on they would very very weakly sometimes find a CDMA network, despite CDMA being dead here (Bell shut it down in 2019 I think)! Even the clock updated. It went to "Roaming" mode and couldn't make calls because I don't have a valid cell plan on it. I am still perplexed to this day
@@DoughnutMasterStudios You may have been picking up Verizon CDMA service from the states or another provider near the US-Canadian border. Canada shut down their CDMA networks in 2017 and 2019.

as someone who doesn't mind smartphones (I wanna be able to make my machine do stuff, if I can put a custom rom on it then it's cool and I actually feel less addicted to that than a PC) but still kinda misses the times when the keypad ruled the world, the design wasn't flat (animated app icons I miss u ;-;) and most phones didn't look the same - yeah, they really used to be better.
while I consider the keypad phones with Symbian to be smartphones, even s40 seems way better than what we have now in that department.
I remember looking at a Nokia 225 4G on a store demo once, I looked through the menus (it had a really annoying droplet sound every time I pressed a key) and just from that decided I will never use this no matter how low I feel. at least if Java games worked I would have an excuse.
Now the reason I got a KaiOS Nokia is because for some reason I thought this to be the return of the old Nokia, new Symbian, an alternative way to make a smartphone that can do the same stuff that Android can but in a different way. well, it has apps, has the hardware that could run android, has... quite a bit outdated firmware that will not get an upgrade to KaiOS 3.x and doesn't look that good... but it has a lot of potential. the reason I got it was to mess with it and mess with it I did. Thanks to the work of BananaHackers community I could get rid of the apps you're complaining about in the video (if you want to do this and haven't updated DON'T, the update makes it waaay harder) and do some funny tweaks like replacing the boot sound (I don't like the new nokia tune) and changing the deep cleaning animation to a video of a racoon eating grapes (cleans not only phone but also the mind). got linux on it. made some apps. y'know regular phone stuff.
the huge part of the OS is javascript. it's html. website stuff. that makes it really easy to make apps for it and modify existing stuff. there's FastContact and FastLog which are meant to be faster replacements of the default contact and call log apps and they definitely seem so. BankiTube is the best way to use UA-cam there (can't log in tho) and for me the best looking youtube app you can use today and inspiration for how KaiOS could look, its design inspired by the old symbian youtube app brings me back to the days I've watched some cool videos on a Nokia N9 every time I use it. anyway if someone really wanted to, they could make alternatives to every app to be faster because there is definitely room for improvement. I might even make a symbian inspired launcher that actually has folders when I'm motivated enough (I **know** it is not that hard to do that). the thing is: that's all homebrew. jailbreaking. you aren't really supposed to sideload, just that on some phones you can do it, on some you can hack it so you can do it and on the newer versions you can't make it sideload directly on the phone but need a PC. it seems to be more locked down with time. I feel if it was as open as Android this could truly be a new Symbian.

Bezels, an interesting matter only talked about on today's huge smartphones, most tech enthusiasts complain about it, however in the modern feature phones you mentioned, they physically look the same as the ones from the late 2000s. Personally, I can imagine how the software must suck on these modern feature phones. I still have 2 of my old Motorola Razr V3 Phones from 2008-2009.

Here in the UK, modern feature phone options are just plain s**t. We have a little popular electronics store (that usually sits at the back of supermarkets) called Argos and the options there are really just awful. I've always found second-hand 2005-2008 feature phones to be the sweet spot.

Ive been without a smartphone for a year as well. Got my grandmas feature phone since she doesnt need it. Its also very rough and buggy but I dont care, I literally only use it for calls. Cool video, glad I ran into it.
I love smartphones and wouldn't trade them for anything, but I really miss back when companies actually cared about the dumbphones they were making and put effort and heart into it instead of making them as cheap and ugly as possible for your grandpa who doesn't understand how smartphones work. Phones like Sony Ericssons and Razrs were made to look futuristic and modern with a sleek look and it showed. And while I understand that most of the general public has moved on and doesn't care about dumbphones anymore, what is the point of going backwards in quality just to make things cheaper? Even if the target audience that wants these types of phones are small compared to the smartphone crowd, is it really worth making them lower quality when there's still people who use and want to use them?
luckily in my country 2G is going to work till 2030
In Europe it is almost impossible to use a normal feature phone (except KaiOS) because almost everyone only uses WhatsApp for communication.

When those phones were the standard, it made sense to make them better, Nokia was making fancy feature phones untill the Asha 3XX era.
It was funny how Nokia didn't seem to know if they should use Symbian or S40 on their cheaper phones, because the Nokia 500 ran Symbian, but it was a feature phone, while the N8 with the same system was a smartphone. At some point they even tried to use Android as a feature phone system(Nokia X), even though it was more capable than Windows Phone

It makes sense that they get worse because nobody is really buying them anymore. Back in the day when they were the only type of phone, everyone was competing with each other and trying to be innovative, but now all that innovation is going into smart phones because that's what over 90% of people have. Try find a high quality cassette player right now, you can't, nothing compares to the Walkman's and cassette players of the late 90s and early 00s because there's no point in companies investing in research and development or the same high quality parts or in the case of these phones - an operating system.

Your experience with KaiOS will vary vastly by what manufacturer you bought it from. I had a great time with one of Alcatel's flip phones. However, you won't find a good camera anywhere on KaiOS.

my ideal list of necessities
1. gps
2. sms and messages over internet
3. wifi hotspot
4. ride share apps
5. tap to pay
6. decent camera(iphone11 equivalent)
7. decent battery life
anything else?
My only problem with this video is that the background music is too loud and can drown out the narration enough that I'd have to actively focus on what you're saying.

I would totally buy a “feature phone” if it had a decent enough camera, had good mp3 playback, hotspot capabilities, and maybe Java support to play old nostalgic phone games
I'd probably still look at the Cat S22 Flip (got one myself for J2ME Loader to play old games). Sure, it's Android, but it seems that people have been successful in rooting and debloating it to be pretty bare-bones. Some have gotten LineageOS to work on it from what I've read. Camera quality isn't amazing, but at least a little better than the feature phones in this video. Also has removable battery and SD card, but no headphone jack (you'd probably need a USB-C adapter).

I usually use my feature phones for communication when I'm away or at school. Feature phones are actually much more easier to use. I do still use my smartphone but only as a "home-media portable device". I mainly use a Nokia N73 for calling, but I'm looking forward for getting a E51 or, if it gets sold, a W810i
I like the 6303c, it has an OK camera, 3,5mm jack for music or radio, good battery life. I use it as my second phone besides an Android smartphone.
no matter what don't buy E52 tho, they all stop working if you do something more than just calling because of some motherboard fuckup

@@dotankoch I got mine from my dad. He used it to call and SMS for over a decade with no issue. I started installing .sisx apps and java applets and it died half a year later

The current S30 isn't the same S30 that Nokia made before, it's based on Spreadtrum's feature phone platform, and Spreadtrum is a Chinese company

My last feature phone was a Samsung Intensity II. It had a sliding QWERTY keyboard, a half decent camera with night vision, and a built-in MP3 player with A2DP support for bluetooth headphones. It also had MIDI support, though if I remember correctly, I could only put them on the phone by sending them as MMS attachments, and they couldn't be used as ringtones. I could be wrong. Either way, the MIDI wavetable sounded great, mostly. It's actually a pretty good feature set for something that was released in 2010 and wasn't an iPhone.
Before that, I had a Motorola W385, whose standout feature was its absolutely gargantuan standby battery life, as well as its dual screen which was always on and displayed a clock and CID. It was my first camera phone and my first phone with Bluetooth.
And prior to that, my first phone was an LG VX4500, which did not have a camera (it was 2005, they existed but were fairly new.) My favorite feature, aside from the dual screen, was the full color main screen. (It was 2005, color phones were also cool and new back then). It also had an ability to download custom ringtones and wallpaper images from Verizon's Get It Now service. And it has a single external RGB LED which could be programmed to show different colors for different types of alerts. And it had that silvered/chrome plastic aesthetic that literally every consumer electronic device from the early-mid aughts seemed to have. Can we bring that back, please?
And waaaaay back even before I got my first phone, I would borrow my grandmother's Samsung SCH-A310. That was back in 2002. One of my favorite features on that phone was its ability to send SMS messages. And it had a game on it that was very similar to Flappy Bird. Yes, Flappy Bird. In 2002. It existed and it was cool.
This seems pretty obvious. The only people that are buying feature phones at any sort of scale that make them even worth shipping is by being the lowest price on the shelf. Where as in the past they were pushing technological bounds and trying to get the consumer to purchase their device by being better in some way. There is next to no demand for a high quality dumb phone today. Why would someone in their right mind want to pay the same for less?
Modern "feature" phones are also smartphones. As they have apps that can be loaded as well as gps, WiFi, and email. That $30 feature phone packs more punch than my Nokia 3395. The 3390 series was the 3310 for the US market. Mine was the 3395 because it has internet capabilities. Miniaturization cost engineering time and money. You use to pay more for the smaller phones. I don't think the op understands economics.
i wish i could have a device the size of a small battery bank that would take in 4g and somehow let a 3g phone know thw information, maybe via wifi

The market is ripe for a feature phone running a simple linux based OS. Really focus in on messaging. Localized text to speech. Ability to sync to email if you want to. Easy PC backups and transfers, without use of cloud based services. If you want to order an uber or check your bank account it can be done on the included chromium based web browser. The low resolution and size of the screen would make it naturally suck for social media, which is good.
...and dumb phones are physically huge because their target market is elderly people.
I want to get away from Unix as much as possible. Was never happy with iPhone or Android but I loved my Windows Phone.

The shutdown of 2g and 3g are just nonsense. I have next to me a palm treo 650. The hardware and software are still stellar. You might want to check out on palm os if you want the productivity of a smartphone (robust agenda, todo list, pdf reading, mail client if thats your thing) with a super fast software, bloat-free, with amazing keyboard and a compact size. The palm centro is the absolute best in that regard. Camera will be garbage tho. And 2g only....
iPhone ios17 now has assistive access mode which makes it closer to a “dumb” phone
100% agree with the video: old phones were great for what they have to do, we jump to Android/iOS for functionality but why today's feature phones are like they are? I still have my Sony Ericsson k800 and mom's Sony Ericsson Z750i but of course no in use for years because no way to buy battery anymore and after 2G shutdown they are officially dead no matter what. But compare those or old nokia from same years to anything we can get now and it's sick. Old phones were fast, goes few days on battery and easy to use for everyone even 90 years old. Just imagine what if port something like those k800/Z750i to 10nm CPU with 4G modem and volte in software, more efficient OLED or even e-ink, add battery because capacity doubles from old pre-smartphone era in same size - without GPS, android and other nonsense it can really last a week with high-quality calls and readable UI.

at this point its nearly impossible to live without a smartphone
in my country there are still some providers with 2G and 3G, and the old feature phones work great, modern feature phones suck a lot, most of their batteries are horrible and software wise are slugish.
bro they still have 2g in Canada? in Australia where i live it already shut down all the way back in 2017

Maybe try looking at importing a phone? I know that in other countries like Japan flip phones stayed main stream for a lot longer compared to North America.

This is exactly what I've been trying to say for years but almost nobody cares or understands lol... Also figured out the japanese versions are incredibly superior, and I wonder why they never released on America or Europe... Just look for the Sony Ericsson W42s, such a gem.
Most likely because Japan at the time had their own unique and unified network for their feature phones, granting them services and features we nowadays take for granted with modern smartphones and that was before the first iPhone was even revealed. Some of this phones were specifically built with that in mind and wouldn’t function properly outside of Japan where the infrastructure just didn’t existed at the time. There were most likely other reasons, but that’s the one that comes to my mind immediately.
