Imagine someone going around in the middle ages and asking people questions like these. Are they really going to respond in any coherent way? The point is that it's incoherent because it's incoherent to just sort of take our contemporary viewpoints and throw them on the past. She plays a lot with this theme throughout the entire film. It's hard to get a sense of the part without a sense of the whole.
