  • Chicken Training: Teaching Chicken to Step Up and Down.
    Tips and Tricks -How to get the chicken to step onto or hop-up onto your hand.
    This is my pet chicken Bonnet. She was hand raised and cuddled from day one, she has never known fear of any kind and loves to snuggle and eat green grapes.
    Bonnet is the star of a few of my chicken episodes (please seed playlist: Chickens as pets) and guest stars along with my pet ducks and rabbits in many of my how to grow a garden episodes.
    My main tip when training a chicken is as with any animal show it love and shower it with kindness and attention. You will become part of the flock and gain it's love and respect in return.
    Just like a dog chickens will come running to greet you, follow you around, beg for food and jump up and sleep on your lap.
    I highly recommend getting a few pet chickens.

    i got baby chickies last week and just started teaching them ‘step up’, and it really helps (if your doing it while their little) to put i bright colored hair tie on your wrist. They don’t eat it at all, they just peck at it. they love to peck at the hair tie so much that it really does help them get onto your hand, becuase you don’t have to buy treats or anything, they can just have a good time with that!! (if you do this, make sure each training session you put a hair tie on your wrist, and keep them by their habitat so that you don’t have to go looking for one)

    The way chicken can actually be trained is very simple: they are extremely food motivated. You show them food, they will do anything.

    I had to bring in one of ours because the peacocks were scaring her. She is blind in one eye and for some reason the peacocks have fallen in love with her. She would bite like hell at first, but now she realizes I am the bringer of food and is fine with my handling her. They can learn.

    A few years ago I had 4 chickens that I adopted from several orphaned clutches
    2 hens 2 roosters
    Their names
    Shade (because she was almost completely black)
    Dirty Snow ( she had black and white feathers)
    Goldy (he had yellowish orange feathers)
    And Determination (he hatched prematurely but held on)
    Determination and Shade were the only ones to make it to adulthood
    Dirty snow got eaten by a fox and Goldy died due to an injury
    Unfortunately I was seperated from them in 2016 and never saw them since
    I miss those chickens

When one of the chickens wander around lonely like she a loner she lieks to wander off around but most of the time they all be together when they go around and one of them is like wandering around herself, whenever i go outside she runs over to me and it's like she trusts me and she follows me wherever i go aswell when she is away from the other chickens and the ducks. Her name is Lizzy and i didn't try that get onto my arm trick / tip but i will give it a try. ( ALso the video was helpful alot )

    words of wisdom don't ever let any chicken within striking distance of your face they Will try and peck out your eyes and if the bottom hook of thr beak hooks in your eye is gone this is not a joke even the gently little hens are still hens and they see something interesting they will strike at it especially pretty set of green or blue eyes

    2 or 3 accidents over the course of a few hours? LOL!
    I remember bringing in my chicken "Gordita", and she pooped once every five or ten minutes lol.

    • @HowToGrowAGarden
      @HowToGrowAGarden  8 років тому +1

      +Corvu55, My chickens are trained to not poop on me and now that they are older they don't poop in the house. In fact Lady my favourite chicken loves to sit on the couch in the living room. She could stay on the couch for hours if she's not hungry. If she needs to poop she hops down and walks out into the garden and does her business there. It's really amazing to watch. The key is if you're going to hold them to always let them go as soon as they get restless. They don't poop on each other unless their over crowded in the coop so if your chickens think your one of the flock you won't get pooped on you either.
      Happy gardening,
      Scarlett

    • @corvu558

      Gordita didn't poop on me though, she pooped all over the floor. My chickens used to poop on me the first few years I had them but now they don't. They used to do it whenever I was holding them or I picked them up but now they wait for me to put them down.

      Not possible. Sorry. Chickens can’t controlled it. However they do tend to do most of their business at night while they sleep.

      Christiana Anderson
      Hi Christiana,
      If you want them for the eggs and plan to keep them in a coop with a run and don't need then to to be tame then you'll wan to get pullets or young hens as it takes 16 week for chickens to start laying eggs. Also by getting them as pullets or teenagers you'll skip all the work and get eggs sooner.
      Oh and don't forget the weather chicks must be kept really warm and clean and dry all the time. The best time to get any bird (young or old) is in the spring. 1st, so they can adapt to the cold and 2nd, so you get eggs since chickens almost stop laying in the winter and can get frost bite.
      If on the other hand you plan to play with them and want them to follow you around or you have preteens or older children that are excited to care for the birds and you don't mind all the extra work involved in raising delicate chicks and pullets then go with chicks.
      I hope that helps.
      Scarlett

    We moved into the house with a bunch of chickens that were left behind. They hate me, how can I get them to learn who I am without them running away?

    • @HowToGrowAGarden
      @HowToGrowAGarden  8 років тому

      Give them food especially worms and sit with them maybe while reading a good book. They'll eventually warm up to you any maybe after a summer or two they'll even sit on your lap while you read.
      Good luck
      Scarlett

      Also, when you're out around them, feeding them, etc., talk to them. Although they may not understand words, they'll learn the sound of your voice. -My chickens know my voice. When they begin to associate your voice (feeding/friendliness=your voice) with the feeding, then that might help them warm-up to you. Lots of creatures can comprehend vocal tone, too. And they rely on the tones of what they hear. So sound warm and friendly to them.

      How to Grow a Garden with Scarlett Damen Hi! I have a pet hen and she lets me pet her and hold her and stuff...But umm...how can you hold that hen on your arm like that, don't her claws hurt you? O.O

    • @HowToGrowAGarden

      Hi Caroline Pena, when she is standing still or sitting on my arm she isn't digging in with her claws. Only if she slipped off my arm would it hurt. -Scarlett

      How to Grow a Garden with Scarlett Damen Oh, ok. Well thanks, I was kind of curious :) BTW, do you know if you can cut a chicken's claws?

    • @HowToGrowAGarden
      @HowToGrowAGarden  9 років тому +1

      Caroline Pena You can if it is a rescued bird. When the chickens are kept in crates or barns and can't scratch their nails will grow very long and should be trimmed. Infuse if their nails get really long it can hinder their ability to walk and scratch. For any happy back yard bird that has free rage of the garden and can scratch all day they naturally going down their nails as they scratch. I'd be very careful clipping their claws as the vain goes almost all the way to the end of the nail and clipping the vain will be very painful, if exposed will get infected and the whole experience will make your chicken very scared of you. Best would be to get them to scratch on a stone. If you make a pile on a stone patio or driveway made of straw and garden clippings or whatever you have on the compost pile and sprinkle on some chicken food or kitchen scraps your chickens will happily scratch it all up and give them selves a manicure in the process.

      No a pet chicken is super chill, compared to other birds, also in my experience most birds will only really like one person or maybe 2 to handle them. Our pet chicken really likes people.

      No. I’ve heard people say yes. But chickens have no control they poop where they poop. That being said they mostly poop at night when they’re sleeping.
