I loved how Simon was written in the fan translation and I love how Simeon was written here. Both versions have the same vibe of this incredible casual confidence in slightly different ways.
Back when the Collection was first revealed and I was a bit more skeptical of it, I wondered what they would do for his name. I have been praising the name Simon Keyes for years, its such a perfect double meaning (triple, even) name! "Simeon Saint" was a very pleasant surprise. A pun on "simian", a nod to Saint Simeon, the holy fool (a great nod for a clown's name to have), as well as a bit of a reference to the bishop piece, tying him to Kanis, the man he idolizes. Not to mention how his surname before losing his memories would have been Gusto, making him a "false saint" of sorts. I lament the fact that the "key individual" foreshadowing isnt there anymore though. Some people have argued that in "a certain someone", "someone" could sound similar to "Simeon" but idk if I buy it. I think the official translation, more often than not, just prioritized natural dialogue that services the plot over the smaller bits of foreshadowing, which is not an approach I prefer, but its one I respect since the dialogue is top notch.
That being said, heres the thing I wanted to mention about the phone call with Simeon with a voice changer earlier in the case. The official translation has him calling Excelsius and his men "a bunch of clowns" rather than the fan translation's "what a fool". The moment he said the word "clowns" I immediately thought to myself "Oh, you sneaky little-" and took a screenshot. Really clever.

I really do love what this game does as an arc for Edgeworth. The mastermind is such as good representation of the themes and a catalyst for him

And then we skipped it so had no context for where he ends up in Dual Destinies besides "lol Edgeworth is Chief Prosecutor because nostalgia".

@@BigKlingy Its kind of sad that Edgeworth has a more consistent character arc then Wright tbh. Its why I want a game between AJ and DD.

I've heard about Sim(e)on in passing over time but actually seeing how he embraces his bad guy persona was a treat, spamming excuses, pointing out contradictions, mocking Edgeworth, and being the most well informed guy but also sometimes very misinformed. It was refreshing to see them get onto him before the confrontation, but still needing everything coming together to really indict him and I appreciated the shorter end.
Calling out Edgeworth for just following the path of his father was a nice jab, and I think it worked nicely that in the ending he decided to keep going for his own reasons, which is probably what Gregory wanted him to have the freedom to choose what to do in life on his own as long as he's happy, in contrast to the external pressures of the corruption and Eddie encouraging him towards the defense side out of obligation/heritage at first.
Overall the streams were pretty lively and the plot of the game was pretty grand to see play out, very tightly coupled together for better or for worse. Looking back there were a lot of cool clutch moments, but sometimes things just seemed to start happening for the sake of connecting them and letting the plot continue to progress when Edgeworth can't do it alone, like getting a forensics result that confirms a theory right after you argue about it. It did feel by the very end there were a lot of characters just sticking around because they were there, as mentioned Franziska had like 2 lines. I liked Lang and Shaun having personal stakes earlier though.

I'll mention again, one theory I always liked is that the whole SS-5 cast is based on characters from the wizard of oz :
Fifi is Dorothy, a seemingly sweet girl who loves animals and found herself in a world much more dangerous than she could have expected.
Excelsius is the heartless tin man, a cruel man who wears the badges of those he strikes down as trophies.
Di-Jun Wang is the cowardly lion, a man who believes himself strong despite being a coward.
Alf is the brainless scarecrow, a poor sap who got killed by blow to the head.
And of course, the mastermind is Oz, the man behind the curtain.

That's an interesting way to look at it, good comparisons.

Now to see how all of these cases link together at last.

"End to your pitiful jester act" sounds better than "not cut out for comedy" imo. Amongst other things, neither Lang nor Gregory uses the phrase"Trump card" (because it sounds weird to refer to the refrigeration report, and Ace in the hole doesn't conflict with Turnabout Trump I guess). Simeon "ushered Kanis out" instead of Kani "took the opportunity to escape" puts him in more of an active role in saving his life.

left early bc yeah- but i caught up on the vod woohoo!
anyways i will say, this is my favorite ace attorney game, mainly because of the theme of parental relationships and (in my interpretation) childhood trauma, as well as giving edgeworth a good fucking character arc! i will forever be pissed about this game taking so long to be officially localized bc it offers such a good look at his character and aaa!!
anyways also, i love simeon’s character so much. like he’s very much a tragic character, like its stated if he could trust in the law maybe he wouldn’t have to be like this but also, you still killed and kidnapped people soooooo-
anyways this game, its characters, and its themes are so good, and im so glad to experience it again and i hope more people can experience this amazing game now

A cute headcannon I have is that Knight chose his own name after the amnesia because he really liked chess lol. Though speaking of I do love how much depth these revelations end up giving Knight. He was already one of the best first case culprits just by the merits of case 1 but this really elevates him even more, poor guy had a pretty horrible life all things considered and it's not surprising he ended up as he did when his only friend secretly despised and manipulated him

Well, this was really interesting! I thought you'd make your final conclusions on the official loc in the end or whatever (even if it's a short video, I think it's a cute thing to do :D)
I did mention it on stream when I joined but I think you didn't read it. The reason why this translation feels so edited (in terms of delivery compared to the fantranslation) and I guess natural and very English-tailored is because the translation part is made by Shloc: a company that provided translation for Elden Ring, Chrono Cross, and also provided additional translation for FFXVI, so they really got first-rate (pun intended) people from the industry this time!

I’m glad I was able to catch at least one of your streams of this game live! I wanted to watch the others, but I was still playing the game myself and I didn’t want to get spoiled 😭.
I looooooved AAI2. I did a total 180 with Verity Gavèlle. I thought she was horrible (not badly written just a mean person) in case 2 and 3 and after realizing what she was really up to in case 4, I was like… “Oh…you’re not that bad!” She’s great. Eustace is awesome too. I was so proud of him for standing up for himself. Bless his heart.
I’m a bit sad bc I’ve finished all the main AA games now :(. I started the series in 2022 and finished just last week. I love these games, and it’s probably my third fave franchise behind Final Fantasy and Fire Emblem. I hope AA7 comes out soon, and they reintroduce some characters from here. I think Agent Lang and Gavèlle were my favorites out of all the newbies in AAI1+2.
Oh also, yeah the twist in AAI2 drove me crazy when it clicked in my head. I had no inking of who the big bad was. I got goosebumps and jumped out of bed lol. I was like, “NOOOOO WAYYYYYYYYY!??!?” I didn’t see it coming at all.

re: incitement - it's a really tough bar to get to incitement at least under US law. Incitement falls under the Brandenburg test - you need to effectively direct someone to commit a crime in a way where it's imminent for it to be incitement. If it's not (i) speech directed at provoking (ii) imminent (iii) lawless action, it's not incitement. Put another way - if the recipient of the message has time to sit down and have a cup of coffee before acting on the message,, it's not incitement.

Fell into a bit of a slump over the past few months, but man, keeping up with this game has been a wild ride. I've heard some people describe this game as "a long series of coincidences and misunderstandings" but I couldn't disagree more. The mastermind is so clearly connected to nearly everything one way or another, and even when it wasn't directly their fault they're still implicitly responsible for things going wrong. And the best part is that their motivations make sense, even if they're misguided and unempathetic. Your playthrough has also made me revisist AA1! I dropped it at like, case 2 because I just wasn't feeling it lol, but this has really set the mood for me.
