BUYING the Jaguar XJ8 Sport (X308 V8)

  • In the previous video, we checked out a slumbering 2002 Jaguar XJ8 Sport and took it for a test drive before leaving an offer at the garage it was parked at.
    Fortunately the offer on this V8 Jaguar (X308 series) was accepted and, with a fresh MOT on the Zircon Blue metallic XJ8, dad and I headed over in his slightly later Jaguar XJ6 to collect it and drive it home. Would the old Jaguar drive home ok?
    Having owned three XJ Series Ones, and a V8-engined XJR, I know all too well that there is no such thing as a "cheap Jaguar". While this one was priced very fairly, inevitably there'll be jobs to do on it as problems rear their head after this car's lengthy slumber. No car likes sitting around, especially one with over 20 years of life behind it, so please subscribe to the channel if you haven't already to follow progress with this "modern classic" Jaguar saloon.
    Comments and likes welcomed as always.

    I’m really glad you bought this lovely Jag. To be honest your comment of “ a lot of car for the money” is a massive understatement ! It’s none of our business what you paid for it but even at the asking price it would have been a great buy. You seem to have the knack of finding and buying some real gems, your Pilot is a cracker and fingers crossed you’ve done it again with the XJ8.. I’m looking forward to seeing this beauty blossoming under your ownership. Great stuff😊

      Agreed, it actually feels a lot more relaxing to drive than the XJR I had, the latter always felt like it was straining at the leash to barrel along at warp factor 8. This one is more of an adequately-brisk wafter, which still steers and handles excellently.

    I am a long time Jaguar owner. I have had an x300, an x308, 2 S-types and 2 XEs. Currently drive an S type and an XE. The only troublesome one was the X308 which developed the fatal nikalsil problem - so it was ditched in favour of the X300 which I owned for many years. They are without doubt the cars to have. I wish you well with it and will follow your journey with interest.

    • @helenlloyd6564

      I have a X308 a lovely car. Could you please tell me what the 'Nikalsil' problem is? I've not heard, I would be delighted if you could briefly explain. 🎉

    • @phillipclaridge3112
      @phillipclaridge3112 23 дні тому

      @@helenlloyd6564 Yes, no problem, When the X308 was first introduced, the bores of the engine were lined with nikasil. Unfortunately, if these cars were used on short journeys the bores were flushed with petrol which dissolved the linings and led to a lack of compression. The only cure was a replacement engine but it cost Jaguar a great deal of money. The problem was resolved with the use of steel liners and all cars built after 1999 were fitted with the later engine. The XK8 and some S types were also affected. I believe BMW had a similar problem at the same time. Hope this is helpful but if you want more, there is a great deal of information available.

    The X308 is total magic, my daily driver. Look after it. One thing, check how old the tyres are, people often leave old tyres on low mileage cars because the tread id still legal, but the rubber gets petrified and loses grip. The 3.2 is fine, not slow as the Mk2 2.4.

    Congratulations on your new purchase. From the brief information you gave us about the car I think you have a good example. I agree with you on the condition being more important than perhaps the 'ideal' specification I don't think it is a compromise in this case. I will be looking forward to 'the first wash' video coming soon, I hope. Harley can earn some money to put in the 'piggy bank' for his MG! Another suggestion I have is he can produce an advertisement for the Jeep that would also earn him some 'brownie points' for his desired purchase! I know it is a few years away yet before he will be able to take his test but there's nothing like starting early.. I hope you don't mind my suggestions re; Harley and if not I wont be offended if you just ignore them. Thanks Rick for taking us along and thanks to all who helped ease the purchase. 👍👍

I have always liked the styling of this model of XJ's and I feel Jaguar have lost their distinctive class recently. Looks like a great car. I had this very model and it never seemed under powered to me. Apparently ,the sport has slightly stiffer suspension compared with the so called “base” and Executive versions it I never found the Sport to have a harsh ride at all,just the right level of waftiness.My Mrs is an eco warrior and hates all my cars and initially wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole but I knew the day would come when she’d need to borrow it when hers was up on bricks so to speak.Low and behold that day came.My phone rang half an hour into her journey and I expected the worst and I thought I’d get a right earful.She’d felt it necessary to stop and tell me how fantastic it was and how much she loved it. High praise indeed ,couldn’t get the keys off her after that.

      Oily rag is great for a pre-war car, or an old lorry, but doesn't really work on recent stuff like this :-) No I'll try and keep it clean! I did wonder about a towbar but with the long overhang rear of the axle, I'm not sure it'd work too well.

    I would have spent money on your beloved Austin A40. And I say that with love in my voice 😊
    Why not go for the jag estate as it would be more practical. What year did jaguar introduce their first estate car?
    Can someone enlighten me please cheers all 🍻

      In the end it'll be a straight swap for the Jeep £wise, and I do need something for distances. The only factory Jaguar estates of the era are the X-Types (the XF was later) and I'm not that keen on them (not compared to the XJ anyway).

    Hi Richard . Must say that other Jaguar looked spanking for £2495 . I guess you paid under £2k for yours ? Will you clean it yourself or take it to a professional valet? 😊

      Welllll I'll just concentrate on prepping it for reliability to begin with, I don't want to be too hung up on keeping it immaculate with it living outside

      Not necessarily, this is a replacement for the Jeep as a daily-ish "modern"

    I would class any car over 20 years old a classic, Pity the DVSA and so the anti car LEZ zealots don't meaning many a great car now prematurely go off to the great scrapyard in the sky 😥😥

    • @oldclassiccarUK
      @oldclassiccarUK  24 дні тому

      I know what you mean, although I wouldn't want to see VED exemption extended to cars younger than 40 years (the current cut-off)

    • @McGrory69
      @McGrory69 24 дні тому

      @@oldclassiccarUK I would go the opposite way of giving a sweetener to car hating politicians that NO vehicle is VED exempt (they love taxing us) and all vehicles must have an MOT but there is a classic class of vehicle say over 20 years old that by law are exempt from LEZ etc thus saving future classics.

    RIP out the Parrot phone kit.Absolute piece of crap . I splashed out two hundred quid on one of these for a Range Rover and it only ever worked about 20% of the time. Their advertising for this product was over ambitious to say the least
