Driving though the I 93 / RT. 1 Tunnel is really neat drive though the heart of Boston. Me &ton My Dad went to Boston last year. I can't Wait for the Nrxt video of the streets of Boston. Thanks =)
Driving thru Rt. 1 in Saugus is quite interesting. It is a thoroughfare to get to Boston from the north with so many businesses directly on the side. It is very scenic in its own way but at the same time it is scary especially having to pull out of one of those stores onto the highway. Great video :) 🛣 🏙 🌆 🌃
And alas, you are in Boston, my local capital; just 25 miles east of my town. Will the footage be able to reach my hometown? Let's wait and see. . . Great video, Jim!
Thanks, I post the tome/day info in the closing credits (I shot this at 8:40 AM) being a native New Englander I know how Boston traffic works so filming Boston early on a Sunday Morning was planned in advance of the trip.
I remember my new-ish Toyota RAV4 (1997 in 2003) stalling out on the Tobin Bridge in the middle of rush hour coming back from Maine. Fortunately it decided to start again before traffic started moving.
The Northeast Expressway in Greater Boston is entirely in Suffolk County, MA that connects Boston and 2 suburbs of the county which are Chelsea, MA and Revere, MA. Keep that in mind.
Not building I 95 through the Revere swamps and not building the Southwest Expressway were major blunders in my opinion.Rt 1 is constantly in need of repaving and bridge replacement and the exit setups are terrible, because it was never designed to handle the traffic load it does, and even with the Big Dig,the Southeast Expressway is a logjam most of the time.
Route 1, if it ever gets widened to 6-8 lanes, is an adequate replacement for the northeast expy. On the other hand, the swexway (Southwest Expy) definitely should’ve been built from Northeastern Uni down to Dedham. A commuter bus from Ruggles to Readville would compensate for the lack of commuter rail service there
When you did this video did you stay in Peabody or did you stay further up the old US 1? And did you know that Route 99 which was to your right in Saugus is the original Route 1? You passed many things that have now been knocked down and put into the history books. One of them was the Hilltop Steakhouse in Saugus. Did you notice the cows in front of the place? You ended the video right on Massachusetts Avenue why did you pick that point to end the video? Steven M. Fanale
+Steven Fanale I stayed in Manchester NH the previous night, I felt that was a good place to end the video as I turned around to head north through Downtown on the streets where the old Central Artery used to be.
So if Route 1 was originally I-95, was modern-day I-93 also I-95? I'm trying to figure out how I-95 would have been continuous through Boston had it been built according to the original plans.
+griffin324 I-95 would have followed what is now US-1 South from Rever to the Central Artery where it would have become the SW Expressway branching off to the right about a mile south of the Mas Pike, Google this, there are lots of entries on it all over the place.
Another excellent video, and a good record of the signing that existed on the Tobin Bridge before MassDOT changed the "Fast Lane" branding to E-ZPass, and ultimately got rid of the toll booths in favor of all electronic tolling. However, forgive me if I clarify your response about the I-95 routing - I-95 would have followed the Northeast Expressway (present US 1), crossed the Tobin Bridge, and then joined and followed the old elevated Central Artery through Downtown Boston. At the Mass. Ave interchange, it would have then joined the unbuilt Inner Belt (I-695), then continuing onto the unbuilt Southwest Expressway. Lastly, I-95 route markers were installed on the elevated Central Artery at one point in the early 1970s, as confirmed from old MassDPW photos. However, a similar search of old photos and plans has failed to reveal that similar markers were installed on the Northeast Expressway - with the exception of an overhead guide sign reading "TO 95 NORTH" at the north end of the Tobin Bridge (which was under MassPort control at the time) - this latter sign remained in place until about 2002 when it was removed as a bridge-wide sign replacement project.
Did you ever figure out why they never build the extension in Revere where Sargent Street comes onto Route 1 Northbound in Revere? Well to tell you the story my dad who worked for the highway department was told that all of the land takings that he did were not going to happen because of the environmentalist. Since that time the whole thing has been nothing but a bottleneck when you leave Boston and are heading towards NH on Route One. Its always bad every single night but its really bad on Friday's. The reason is that everyone is leaving at the same time and since the state has never sone this project we have always had this bottleneck. If you notice that Chelsea had a new school which is right off the Northeast Expressway. That school was built by James F. Carlin who was a former Secretary Of Transportation and Construction. He took the job in Chelsea in 1991 and under his direction he rebuilt every school in the city of Chelsea so that Boston University could take over the education in Chelsea. Steven M.Fanale
What ultimately killed off construction of the Northeast Expressway north of Route 60 in Revere was not so much local opposition to crossing the Rumney Marsh in Revere and Saugus, which actually had been bridged by a huge sand embankment by the time the I-95 project was cancelled. Rather, it was because MassDPW couldn't find a reasonable alignment through Lynn that avoided crossing the Lynn Woods Reservation, which was (and still is) the drinking water supply for the City of Lynn, which the Federal Government strongly objected to. Similar Federal opposition doomed the extension of Interstate 84 from Hartford to Providence, which would have crossed a large water supply on the Connecticut/Rhode Island border.
Look I understand taking things literally but you are way over the top, nobody here is doing or condoning drug use, heck I don't even drink. Now get your act together and quit acting like a jerk!
As much as I enjoy going through I-90 South or North in this and your other videos going towards Lynn or going towards Revere or going towards Brockton the videos go way to to fast if you slowed it down I could enjoy it more it was really irritating not to recognize places I loved to travel when I lived there I was excited to think I could see my old neighborhoods but disappointed that I couldn't recognize landmarks because you were speeding up the video sad
Okay there’s a speed control for UA-cam videos. Just tap the video, tap the vertical ‘...’ and select your desired viewing speed. You could have just Googled that yourself and figured it out in much less time than it took you to write that comment.🤷🏻♂️
Thanks for the tours 😘 I'ma from Dorchester Roxybury 🙏 southie Boston Massachusetts ♥
Thank you for watching!

really dig the tune you picked to your explorations thanxs
Great Video, Boston has a great skyline.
4:15 you can see the Zakim bridge from here!
I think I drove this road when I visited Massachusetts in 2017. All those stores and fast food chains sitting on both sides look very familiar.
And alas, you are in Boston, my local capital; just 25 miles east of my town. Will the footage be able to reach my hometown? Let's wait and see. . .
Great video, Jim!
Nice work, Jim. Thanks for the ride...
There are 4 more Boston videos to go, be patient :)
Nice video Jim. That is the WEIRDEST pauedo-expressways I've ever seen! And nice track.

Boston has interesting tunnels and bridges. One day, I would like to go there.
Since I live in Boston I using drive around.
I remember my new-ish Toyota RAV4 (1997 in 2003) stalling out on the Tobin Bridge in the middle of rush hour coming back from Maine. Fortunately it decided to start again before traffic started moving.
Thanks, you'll see more of the Central Artery Tunnel coming up, plus I have several earlier videos that show it.

Thanks, I'm glad you liked it!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it.
If you haven’t noticed, at 4:16 there is an H on the sign. I think that’s supposed to say north for I-93 north, but they didn’t bother
It probably means there's a hospital off that ramp
Thanks! glad you liked it.
Great vid as always!
5:44 LOL!...Thought you were going to Roxbury for a second there!.
love your videos.. thanks for always sharing! (small town girl - west texas)
the bridge actually has 135 feet of clearance above the Mystic River.
Thanks, sorry the videos won't reach your town.
Thank you!
Driven the same route hundreds of times. Thanks for allowing the "trip home".
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hi Freewayjim, HUGE fan. You think you do a complete US-1 drive broken up into videos someday. That's on my bucket list.
Thank you! I doubt I would be able to get the footage needed to do a video like that.
Thanks!

Beginning to 2:24 The road looks like a degraded 1950s Jersey Freeway!
Looks like the part from 2:24 to 2:37 is, too, save for the flyover at Rte. 99 Broadway-Malden.
No, that happened along one of the I-90 tunnels.
also really dig the highway in this
No, I have not been up there yet but I am aware of their highways.
Thanks Bryant, you haven't seen anything yet with regards to bad drivers in Boston.
Have you ever gone on a road trip to Toronto? Some decent highways there
Loved it Jim

Have not been on US 1 in that area since 1977. Looks no different. Orion the Hunter is great music for a your road video.
Thanks
I forgot about Orion the Hunter, lol.
Yes it does, I usually just stick with the Interstate and US Routes, nobody in Texas or Illinois cares that MA-3 is part of the route.
That's inappropriate, cccEngineer is merely stating that he enjoys the videos, I highly doubt he's a "druggie loser". You owe him an apology!
At what time point exactly?
Yes, South Peabody!

What, no music from the band Boston?
Question: is that an offramp to another Interstate inside the frickin' tunnel?
If it is I 93, not directly to the interstate. You pass through actual streets and pass through traffic signals.
US 1 somewhat similar to NJ 17 from Ramsey to Paramus.
Dang! Oh well, at least I drive these roads alot!
Good video
Nice music
I've watched this before
4:30
Don't you just "love" those passing lane loafers? I'm not even riding with you and I'm already annoyed by that guy!
Ok, that's it, you're gone.
My home :)
Good jobFJ.
5:00 - 5:10 ...?
Ew chelsea
