Cover-3 Match has been my base coverage for over 12 years. Fell in love with it when I saw Saban give a clinic. It just made so much sense to me. You can't live in 3-Match versus some teams, but it's a very solid coverage as a base, especially from the middle of the field.
Exactly. When I was introduced to it years ago, I did not love it because I felt like it was too much thinking for the defenders but over time, it really protected you against offenses plotting against you.
Since a swing pass is a route happening behind the line of scrimmage, it would not draw immediate attention. It's a route in cover 3 that the defense would rally to after the ball is thrown. However, in a spot drop cover 3, your outside linebacker would be the first on the scene vs a throw to the swing since he's a curl / flat defender. In a matchup zone cover 3, the mike backer would widen on the swing by the back as the OLB would have to carry the seam by 2. In this case, the Mike would have to be the first on the scene if the ball was thrown to the back on the swing.
We have our Free Safety key the "triangle" between the two slot receivers. (connect an imaginary line from the two slots to the free safety, that's the triangle) Those are his immediate vertical threats. The flat Defenders are carrying those slots vertical and he will play over-the-top. If neither of those slots goes vertical then he gets his eyes to the outside receivers.
Spot drop is when you drop to an area and read the QB’s eyes hoping for a player to come to your area. Match up is where you have rules and will latch onto a certain receiver that comes into your area based on those rules. At that point, it becomes man. In those situations, you may or may not have help from another defender

Thank you. I think hung DBs need to know this
Great explanation Coach… Can you speak on the possibility of swing pass to the 3 with 1&2 vertical and defensive responsibility for that route

Can you please make a video on how to watch film
I started a series on that in my member's area. You should consider signing up: alleyesdbcamp.com/sign-up/
If I’m a FS safety how do I pick a side on the deep ball in the coverages you covered
That's a topic I will cover in depth in my member's area but basically, read the QB.

How do I know if it’s spot drop or match?
