Thank you for this video. I have a Stihl wacker that I don't drop start, lucky me, but I still am happy to know why I shouldn't. I was still possibly pulling the starter rope to jerky. I have so much equipment, it's hard to keep track of how each piece starts honestly. I am interested in the fact I don't always start my chainsaw on the ground. I drop start it. You have me wondering if I should rethink my saw operation.
What are the symptoms for when that easy-start spring is broken? Excellent video Steve!!! I learned something new today. (I don't drop-start my tools. But now I know exactly why not to.)
Could you demonstrate non-drop starting technique for in-tree work. I can't picture how an easy start slow pull would happen while rigged up in a tree.

I've always thought of drop starting as a bit careless so I've never done it myself. If it's a weedeater I usually put it on the ground, put a foot on it, and yank the starter cord so my shoulder dislocates.

Same exact thing happened to me, broke the recoil spring twice because the dealer never told me my trimmer had an EZ start. Thank You Steve because of you, now I know! Excellent information!
Good information, concise and clear. For those who hate the easy start, I remember the chainsaws in 60-70s. They were so hard to pull that they sometimes pulled back more cord than I pulled. They have these compression (?) buttons to push now. So much easier.
I'm a habitual drop starter. I worked in the woods for years (1980s and 1990s) starting Stihl 051's , 075's and 076's on the landing cutting up for 2 skidders. I will check my current saw, a new Husky, and make I am not destroying it. Thanks.
Thanks, Steve! You explained Drop Starting, the Easy Start system, and why you don't use the former to start the latter! You are my favorite Small Engine Mechanic. You break it down where most folks can get it, you make it fun, and never boring. Thanks again!

I've been using synthetic fuel from VP Racing to avoid the winter storage problems. However you just might need a carb rebuild to clear out any gummy deposits, that's if you happen to use ethanol blend premium gas. Another way to start the stihl for me and many people I've been told at the stihl dealer is pull without priming the carb or just prime once on a cold start. The factory instructions tend to flood the motor with to much fuel.
That was a big help. I blew a major hernia and really wrecked myself up, so my local Stihl dealer sold me a new easy start chainsaw to keep from hurting myself while I healed. It felt really alien to me after years of drop-starting saws. Now that I am finally getting better, I might have gone back to drop-starting on that new saw and would have messed it up. Thanks!
I was reading my Stihl trimmer manual and it casually mentions "don't drop start your trimmer". But it goes on to over stuff - they don't tell you what drop starting IS. I figured it was some nonsense about dropping the tool while holding the starter cord. I wanted to see that particular idiocy, so I googled it. There isn't much - but I did eventually find THIS video. Thing is, I learned how to start small engines in 1965, so of course I drop-start everything. (Heck, our mowers and outboards used to have hand-wound starter cords!) Now I know better, and my shoulder thanks you for the lesson, Steve! (Stihl really needs to rewrite their manuals....)
Another thing about easy start chainsaws (at least with my Stihl MS251C) is that you don't have to pull the starter cord all the way out to start it. For a cold saw, a gentle half pull or two (with the choke all the way out), followed by another gentle half pull or two (with the choke released) and it starts right up. I'm 68 years old; I need to take care of my rotator cuffs so this saw is a godsend for me. I highly recommend this type of saw for anybody who doesn't want to feel like they have been in a 15 round fight to get their saw started.

You make some great videos keep them coming. I’ve been a landscaper for 25 years and didn’t realize I was starting my way to wrong the whole time. Did not know, uh read, the proper way to use easy start, just thought it was marketing. So went out to the garage after watching this video, it really is easy start lol. No more drop starts, well not for this trimmer anyway lol. Your channel is great Steve, discovered recently so lots of catch up to do. Thanks for the complete yet simple explanations. 👍
Good advice Steve, I always start mine while on the ground more from habit than anything else. I wasn't given this advice when I brought it from my local dealer, I would hope they just forgot to tell me rather than waiting for me to bring it back in for repair with a broken easy start spring.
Damn, I tought that easy-start was something like an automatic choke release when you pull the throttle after you start the engine. Thanks for sharing, learn something new every day 😇
Been in the Forrest industry for 40 year's, ( Logging ) and that's how I have started chainsaws my whole life. However these easy start components have to have a little finesse applied to starting them or you will destroy the starters. Great video. Admiring the cross cut saw on the wall in the background. My great, great, great, great grandfather used them a lot. My two brothers and I are 4th generation logger's in our family. And still at it . 👍
Man I needed this video three weeks ago. I've gone through 4 of the ez start springs on my blower. Once the Stihl tech told me about this feature, no more trips to the shop.

New info, thanks. I trashed a chain saw that must have had a broken easy start spring. Now I'll know what to look for. I always drop start every thing & thought I was smart for adding that extra power. My mower and edger are both over 10 years old so I probably won't stop now. All my stuff is pre-easy-start. My little Stihl chainsaw has way too much compression to stop-start when cold, but I've occasionally done it when restarting. That easy-start system looks pretty cool. Thanks for your excellent videos.

Thanks Steve , I have learned alot , I have been drop starting over the years but I have just bought myself an echo cs 390 easy start chainsaw and watched this video just in time ! Many thanks ! From David in Devon uk 👍
I have learned a lot about the new generation chain saws from watching Steve's small engine saloon that I would not have on my own or from the dealer's I bought them from- easy start ,I thought their was something wrong w/it, how to start a flooded saw, but not score the piston, proper maintains and cleaning of both the 261 stihl and the 550 husky and so on - I really like how Steve explains things and even demos how to. The older generation saws were much simpler but the new ones really are great if once one learns proper this and that about them - and I would still be struggling w/ a few things if I didn't catch Steve's channel - thanks for your help Steve I learned a lot and more than likely saved some money to. I will continue watching Steve's small engine saloon.
you're giving me the goods here, steve. I'm a new mechanic and everything I've seen from you has been excellent corollary to the Stihl training I've been taking. Thanks again, and I'm sure I'm going to be posting this many times over as time goes on lol :]

I just replaced my husqvarna trimmer and have always drop started. Thank you for pointing this out. I bought from a power saw shop with mowers, not a big box store. You would think they would educate me at the time of purchase. Thanks again , no more drop start
Hey there Steve, been wrapped up in life for awhile and my coming back to catch-up is perfect timing. I do have a Stihl bush whacker easy start, instinctively, I never drop start. My reason has been due to fear of increased wear and tear on the pull cord. Years ago I had a cord break inside the housing while doing a drop start. Now I have two reasons not to drop start besides safety reasons. Thanks As Always, Steve
I knew my Stihl edger and Stihl weed eater both have easy start and I like it, usually start on 2nd pull. I didn't know about drop start, so I don't do it but i learned something, thanks Steve.
I just got a new offbrand chainsaw, and I didn't even know what easy start was. I kept wondering what that weird springy feeling was. I thought there was something wrong with the saw. But then I figured it out, that it just kind of wound up and then released and turned the engine over, and then I thought to myself, they did that on purpose! I thought that's pretty cool! It starts pretty easy that way! Thanks for telling me what I was dealing with there.
Drop start everything. But I have all echo equipment and don't think I have any easy start systems. No issues. But then again, I don't abuse equipment.
I have an Echo Weed Eater and Edger and Blower and I have drop started them both. I know they have a similar Easy Start too. Thanks so much for this video. I won't be starting them like that again! That's for sure. Awesome video!
Ah man...never knew that I was "drop starting" my stuff. Thanks Steve! My stuff is at least 10 years old...so I don't remember if any of it is the easy start type.
I got an easy start blower at my job and I tell the guys I work with all the time you can’t pull on it like it’s a regular blower your going to mess it up. They still do the same so now because of this video I know why it doesn’t start as good anymore thanks for the content
My dad has a stihl chainsaw with this easy start and I tell him everytime I use it how much I hate it..., I’ve been “drop starting” it. Makes total sense now. Can’t wait to actually properly start it now.
Never had a problem drop starting but I guess I don’t have any easy starts on all my stihl equipment....I’m a landscaper. Seems like that may only come in the ‘home owners’ models?
When you pull slowly on the starter rope and feel the bump bump bump of the compression its not easy start , simple as can be ! Easy start has a spring relief like you said so it's gonna feel like the rope is stretching , great information ! Not snatching on the pull starter is always good !
Thanks for the tip Steve. I don't know whether my leaf blower is an easy start or not, but now I know how to determine that. I believe it is as the pull is somewhat fluid. I won't be drop starting it for sure now. Thanks.
Thank you so much for putting that out there. I try my best to discourage easy start sales because of this issue. Also I hate that it is offered on chainsaws. If you need easy start then a chainsaw may not be a tool for you.
Think about it: some folks, like my wife, have good muscle strength but still have difficulty starting some chainsaws. An Easy Start enables her to get the job done. I had a serious tendonitis problem that took almost two years to heal; that saw allowed me to keep working. I too was worried about the longevity of the saw, but no issues so far, and it's been a few years.

Thanks Steve , I have learned alot , I have been drop starting over the years but I have just bought myself an echo cs 390 easy start chainsaw and watched this video just in time ! Many thanks ! From David in Devon uk 👍
You're Welcome...
@@StevesSmallEngineSaloon hi
Thankyou this explains my solo chainsaw having two starter coils it's a easy start. No more dropping
Right on
I have learned a lot about the new generation chain saws from watching Steve's small engine saloon that I would not have on my own or from the dealer's I bought them from- easy start ,I thought their was something wrong w/it, how to start a flooded saw, but not score the piston, proper maintains and cleaning of both the 261 stihl and the 550 husky and so on - I really like how Steve explains things and even demos how to.
Thank You...and You're Welcome...
you're giving me the goods here, steve. I'm a new mechanic and everything I've seen from you has been excellent corollary to the Stihl training I've been taking.
Thanks again, and I'm sure I'm going to be posting this many times over as time goes on lol
:]
Glad to help
Hyper-niche UA-camrs are my jam. I genuinely hope y’all filming specific sh**” stay relevant and awesome. Mad respect and, to quote the painfully underrated movie, Joe Versus the Volcano:
“May you live to be a thousand years old, sir.”
LOL! Thank You...
There's also a key to drop starting ETERNAL LIFE as well y'all. It's called believe in and receive Jesus as Savior & Lord! Merry Christmas to all! 🌲🇺🇸☕🦌🦃
I leaned something today. Thank you Steve!
Excellent!
Thanks for the tip. I believe my Stihl FS91 is an easy start. I was drop starting it. Lucky I didn't break the spring.
Just bought my first 52cc chainsaw. It has an easy-start mechanism. This is tremendous advice, thank you very much for this Steve.
Glad to help
I drop start my chainsaw because that how the first firewood guy I knew did it and I thought that was so cool.
I drop start my stuff like it’s hot!
Lol glad you brought it up
This helps with my McCulloch. Had to get it fixed once for the same problem. Service place didn't tell me that's why it broke though.
Bill Williams my McCullouch doesn’t have it
@@mrnathnlan6291 Doesn't have what? Lol.
I just replaced my husqvarna trimmer and have always drop started.
Thank you for pointing this out. I bought from a power saw shop with mowers, not a big box store. You would think they would educate me at the time of purchase. Thanks again , no more drop start
You're Welcome...
Best chainsaw and engine advice ive seen on youtube. The how to save a flooded saw video has been amazing advice since i seen it.
Wow, thanks!
Wow, I'm guilty of going the drop start on mine, thanks, I'll change my starts from now on
Right on....
This guy has crazy knowledge. What a great video
Thank You...
You're Welcome...
I knew my Stihl edger and Stihl weed eater both have easy start and I like it, usually start on 2nd pull. I didn't know about drop start, so I don't do it but i learned something, thanks Steve.
You're Welcome...
I've actually learnt in scool to "drop start" my chainsaw (with chain break on)
Never touched a easy start before.
But i always "dropstart" going full on HULK mode on that starter rope 😅 never had an issue
I got my own small engine repair shop!, that's a winner right there!
Thank You...
I’m so glad I seen this and I’m a do it all guy and never knew this lol.Rebuilt a lot of stuff too but the more you know the more you know.
i'm a drop starter... for that reason i don't buy easy start equipment lol
Right there with you especially with chainsaws
Habits, I hear ya
Me too
I just want to see how well made it is, so I drop start the piss out of it, everytime.....MURICA!
@Ross Outdoors not me, 30 and grew up doing it. Especially chain saws. Don’t use chain brakes either, because I grew up with saws that didn’t have it.
Steve, this is a superb video 👍 Thanks and have a Blessed Easter.
What he said..
Thank You...
Drop start everything. But I have all echo equipment and don't think I have any easy start systems. No issues. But then again, I don't abuse equipment.
You're saving a lot of people a lot of headaches and a lot of cuss fits. Good on ya.
Right on
I have an Echo Weed Eater and Edger and Blower and I have drop started them both. I know they have a similar Easy Start too. Thanks so much for this video. I won't be starting them like that again! That's for sure. Awesome video!
Right on Buddy...
Ah man...never knew that I was "drop starting" my stuff. Thanks Steve! My stuff is at least 10 years old...so I don't remember if any of it is the easy start type.
Never heard of that, but then all of my stuff is at least 10 years old. Anyway, as always, great information. Thanks.
You're Welcome...
Great set design. Nothing goes with dangerous power equipment as well as booze. 👍🏻😂
I got an easy start blower at my job and I tell the guys I work with all the time you can’t pull on it like it’s a regular blower your going to mess it up. They still do the same so now because of this video I know why it doesn’t start as good anymore thanks for the content
You're Welcome...
My dad has a stihl chainsaw with this easy start and I tell him everytime I use it how much I hate it..., I’ve been “drop starting” it. Makes total sense now. Can’t wait to actually properly start it now.
Right on
Love your choice of beer. The tutorial is pretty good too. LOL
Right on....
Man, I wish my lady had an Easystart starter on her !
Thanks.
Glad to help
You should make a "how to vid" about changing that spring
Thank you so much for putting that out there. I try my best to discourage easy start sales because of this issue. Also I hate that it is offered on chainsaws. If you need easy start then a chainsaw may not be a tool for you.
Right, hard to not do a drop start halfway up a tree lol
If you need an easy start, buy a 80V battery powered chainsaw.
My wife asked me why I threw my weed eater into the side of the garage. I toll her it was heavy to throw it all the way over it. Lol
Was she standing on the other side?
Thanks I just did this, I have a ms180 c Stijl and cussed for few minutes cause it brand new. I checked a few videos on self repair and then I found your channel. Very happy I learned the Correct way. Thanks again
Glad it helped
You provide a great service for taking better care of expensive equipment. Thanks
Our pleasure!
