A great actress. More recently, the singer Madonna also has had that natural ability to play completely different roles in her videos, from the Virgin to a witch, and all of them convincingly. In Jungian psychology it is called the Trickster archetype, with which some people are born, thus their ability to transform themselves rather astoundingly.

"The Addams Family" has long been one of my ten all-time favorite television series. But it's only in the past few years I've really become acquainted with the depth and breadth of Carolyn's work. If anyone has not yet seen the movie "Career" (also stars Shirley MacLaine in one of her earliest parts) - it's a lost gem, and Carolyn's performance in that was one of the finest I've ever seen by ANY actress. I so respect her work ethic and her professionalism - never a sloppy half-hearted performance by her even if it wasn't the best part or production. This was a wonderful, comprehensive tribute that I'm sure Carolyn would be thrilled to watch herself.

Thank you for covering Carolyn Jones. One of my favorite actresses. Found out so many interesting things about her especially having been married and friends with Aaron Spelling. And love her as Morticia. Compared against the other two actresses up for that part, totally didn't fit at all. And the chemistry between her and John Austin was pure magic. 🥰

Everybody knows her from the television show The Addams Family which ran from 1964 thru 1966 for a total of 64 episodes. Here's small sample of Carolyn's films in which she gave stellar performances especially in these films: Invasion Of The Body Snatchers (1956, Allied Artists), The House Of Wax (1953, Warner Brothers), Marjorie Morningstar (1958, Warner Brothers), King Creole (1958, Paramount Pictures), Ice Palace (1960, Warner Brothers), Career (1958, Paramount), and How The West Was Won (1962, MGM).
Carolyn Sue Jones was born April 28, 1930, in Amarillo, Texas. The daughter of Chloe Jeanette Southern, a housewife, and Julius Alfred Jones, a barber. In 1934, her father abandoned the family, so Carolyn and her younger sister, Bette Rhea Jones, moved with their mother into her grandparents' Amarillo home. Carolyn suffered from severe asthma while growing up which often restricted her childhood activities. Carolyn loved to read books but she especially love to read movie magazines and and as she got older her one dream was to perform at the famous Pasadena Playhouse. In 1947 she was accepted and it was her grandfather who paid for her tuition while she was enrolled at the Playhouse. After graduating from the Pasadena Playhouse in 1950. Jones secured a contract at Paramount Pictures and made her screen debut in The Turning Point 1952. In 1953, she married aspiring film-maker Aaron Spelling (converting to Judaism upon their marriage) and her film career began to gain momentum. In the House of Wax (1953, Paramout), Jones was the woman who's murdered by Vincent Price and becomes the Joan of Arc statue, her performance brought her good reviews. She was cast in From Here to Eternity (1953, Columbia), but a bout with severe pneumonia forced her to withdraw. Donna Reed, was then cast as Alma almost a decade Jones's senior, was recast in her role and won an Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her performance. The year 1958 was a big year for Carolyn Jones she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for The Bachelor Party, (her famous line, "Just say you love me--you don't have to mean it!"). For this role, she surprised cast members by dying her hair black and cutting it short. This stunning look brought out her features and gave her a completely new image which served her well for a number of roles. Carolyn was one of a few actresses that looked good either as a blonde or brunette. For her eight minutes on screen, she received glowing reviews and the nomination for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress but lost to Miyoshi Umeki for Sayonara. But she did get to share a Golden Globe Award for "Most Promising Newcomer" along with Sandra Dee and Diane Varsi. However, she did win the Golden Globe Award and the Laurel Award for Herman Wouk's best selling novel Marjorie Morningstar (1958, Warner Brothers) portraying Natalie Wood's best friend Marsha Zelenko who tries to find some happiness. She followed this with an impressive appearance in King Creole (1958), as the girl Elvis becomes romantically involved with. King Creole is regarded as Elvis Presley's best film and performance of his career. Carolyn then gave arguably her best performance ever in the film Career (1959, Paramount Pictures), she plays Anthony Franciosa's lonely but faithful agent, but the film was not commercially successful. Jones was originally cast as the alcoholic Sharon Kensington but switched roles with Shirley MacLaine in order to play Shirley Drake (the agent) because she wanted the less flamboyant role.
In the epic Western, How The West Was Won (1963, MGM), she played the role of Sheriff Jeb Rawlings' (George Peppard) wife. She appears with Peppard and Debbie Reynolds in the last speaking/singing scenes of the film.
After ten years of marriage Aaron Spelling and Carolyn Jones separated in October 1963 and were amicably divorced in August 1964, with Carolyn asking for no alimony. They remained friends until her death in 1983. Soon, she got the part for which she will best be remembered, that of Morticia Addams in The Addams Family (1964). She spent two years in this role. The blatant sexual chemistry between Morticia and her husband Gomez (John Astin was shocking for the time, perhaps only matched by the sexuality displayed in "Bachelor Party" and "King Creole." The show was a big hit and she received all the fame she had craved. However, the network decided to cancel the show, despite its success, after only two years. Following the cancellation of The Addams Family in 1966, Carolyn Jones' career began to slide. With few film roles in sight, Jones made a number of television appearances, including a memorable turn on Batman as Marsha, Queen of Diamonds. She also went back to stage work, acting in Harold Pinter's play The Homecoming on Broadway for a period in 1967. She remarried the following year, this time to director Herbert Green; during this marriage Jones worked very little, taking on occasional roles in films and television. However, the marriage didn't last. Upon her divorce in the mid 1970s, she went back to work with a vengeance, acting in an episode of Ellery Queen and in several made-for-television films and miniseries (Roots was one of them). She did four episodes of Fantasy Island (1977) and one episode of The Love Boat (1977). She than played Myrna Clegg on the soap Capitol from 1982 to 1983, despite having been diagnosed with colon cancer in 1981. She had aggressive treatment for the cancer, but it returned during her time on the show and she was told it was terminal. She played some scenes despite being confined to a wheelchair and working in great pain. Although they knew she was dying, she married her boyfriend of five years, Peter Bailey-Britton, on September 1982. She died on August 3, 1983. Carolyn told her sister that she wanted her epitaph to be "She gave joy to the world." Which she did and had many friends who loved her. She donated her Morticia costume and wig to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, while a collection of Addams Family scripts were donated by Bailey-Britton to UCLA.

Some, if not all, of her lines on The Addams Family are forever indelibly etched in my memory! She was the original Goth; along with dark humour, fantastic stage settings and an indefinable beauty and voice, she made the macabre sexy! Once she’s in your system, it’s impossible to shake her off….and now, for me at 60, I’m finally discovering the UA-cam Goth vids plus the Goth festivals, so much so that I am determined to dress as a Goth/ vampire for the next Whitby Goth festival in October 2022! RIP Carolyn, you are forever Morticia Addams!
