    If running a fumble the wrong way is all that anyone chooses to remember, then why is Jackie Smith in the PFHOF after dropping an easy touchdown pass in no less a game than Super Bowl 13?
    Frenchy Fuqua's college coach was right: "People remember the last thing you did."

      That wasn't a easy catch that Jackie dropped he was sliding to the ground with no balance when he was trying to catch that ball. Also Dallas defense was terrible in that Super Bowl anyway.

    it's not the wrong way fumble that keeps him out. chris russo makes a fair point, as good as the vikings DL was for approx 10yrs or so they had terrible super bowls. they couldn't handle big OL's & teams with elite running games particularly the dolphins, steelers, raiders.

  • @bryanjones4444
    @bryanjones4444 2 роки тому +1

    Personally I think he is number 1 on this list and it is not even close. Pro Football Reference gives Jim Marshall the 5th highest career value score of any defensive lineman in history. Marshall was a dominate force for over a decade. If he had retired in 1972 before ever playing in a Super Bowl he should be in the hall. He was still a starter and an effective player at age 36 when he played in his first Super Bowl. His detractors are saying that a 36 through 39 year old Marshall was not good enough to be in the hall and I would agree with that. But when you take his whole career there is no question, NONE! And by the way Len Dawson you and the Chiefs faced an even older Vikings defensive line two times after that Super Bowl. You had the same game plan run at Marshall and Page because they were old and small. You managed only 73 yards rushing per game and lost miserably both times. Even as old men Marshall and Page kicked your ass!!

  • @bryanjones4444
    @bryanjones4444 2 роки тому +1

    I think that the reason he is not already in the hall is because people just can't believe that one defensive line had 3 Hall of Famers. That line was the key to the best defense in history. The 69 and 70 Vikings put together the two best single seasons that a defense ever put up and it is not even close. The 69-76 Vikings were the best defense over an 8 year run of any defense in history although this time they had competition, the 70's Steel Curtain. That Steel Curtain defense has 4 Hall of Famers. Why shouldn't the best defense also have 4. Marshall has the fourth most sacks of anyone from that era. The only three ahead of him are Alan Page, Carl Eller and Deacon Jones all of whom went into the hall early in their eligibility. Marshall is far and away the best player not in the Hall of Fame.

    I felt this video did bring up a fair point. Those Vikings always failed to show up to the big games, and the AFC teams at the time could shut the Purple People Eaters down without much issue. Hard to be seen as a feared defense when your opponent can use brute force alone to overpower you.
    Also they fail to bring up Marshal had only has 4 Pro Bowls and 0 First-Team All Pros. The Wrong Way Run isn't the only reason he's not in the hall.

    Not sure where Len Dawson gets off saying that the Chiefs gameplan was to run at Marshall, because it wasn’t. Their gameplan was to double team him and Eller so as to prevent them from knocking down passes, while they throw short passes over them to their receivers who were being covered softly by the Vikings DB’s. As for running the run, their leading rusher was WR Frank Pitts who had 39 yards on 3 reverse handoffs.

    In regards to the "Wrong Way Run:" As Joe Horrigan says: a 20 year career is not one play, so it should not be based on one play. Not to mention, late in that very same game, Jim helped seal the game away with a strip sack, which Carl Eller I believe took the ball in for the game-sealing TD.

    The Vikings as a group are undone by their performance in the Super Bowl. They were dominated by the AFC representative in every game. This includes Alan Page, Carl Eller and Jim Marshall. The Chiefs, Raiders and Steelers ran roughshod over the Vikings. Gorging on "The Purple People Eaters." While Marshall's consecutive game streak is astounding, he damaged his performance by playing so long. The great tackle Art Shell of the Raiders devastated Marshall in their Super Bowl matchup. Not a single tackle the entire game!! Longevity is a big calling card. Longevity and playing at an elite level is even greater. The Vikings and Jim Marshall failed miserably in that regard.

  • @josedopwell9645
    @josedopwell9645 6 років тому +2

    The wrong way run doesn't matter. Only one play in a 20-year career. But Marshall only played in 2 Pro Bowls, both before the merger when each NFL conference (East and West) selected 3 DEs. Both Page (3) and Eller (2) had at least that many second team All-Pro nods. They also had 6 and 5 first team honors, respectively. The same year Page won league MVP (1971), Eller was voted NFL Defensive Player of the Year. Page was voted to 9 Pro Bowls and Eller to 6, and both are on the NFL's All-Decade team of the 70s. Page and Eller are swimming in accolades while Marshall's don't register at that level. Comparisons are made between Marshall and baseball's Cal Ripken, Jr. But Ripken and Brett Favre is a better one, I think, because of the durability-productivity link. Marshall was obviously a very good player. But his overall accomplishments beyond games played don't scream HALL OF FAME.

    Marshall, unfortunately has 3 factors working against him (in no particular order):
    1. He and his teams were beaten bad in all 4 Super Bowls they played in, and he in particular played poorly . Super Bowl 11 he didn't even register a single tackle.
    2. The Purple People Eater Vikings teams already have 6 HOF players, a HOF head coach, and a HOF GM, thus Marshall has kinda gotten lost in the shuffle

      Also, zero selections as All-Pro, and only two selections to a Pro Bowl, which were in the pre-merger days (East vs West) when the Pro Bowlers were among the 3 best at the position among only 8 teams. Most players in the HOF have been named All-Pro at least five times, showing their dominance in their eras, not just playing for a long time.

    Statistically, Jim Marshall was never selected All-Pro, and only selected to two Pro Bowls (note, this is the same number of Pro Bowl appearences as the "fourth member" of the Purple People Eaters, Gary Larsen). Moreover, his statistics are not impressive (6.5 average sacks per year), in addition to being part of a defense known for "not showing up for the big games". He is credited for his longevity (playing 20 years as a defensive lineman), but that alone is not enough to be considered as a player who truly impacted the game. In comparison to HOF'ers Carl Eller and Alan Page, Marshall was only an average contributor on that D-Line.

    Why do players get judged for what they do and did of the field, it's what's done on the field that gets them into the hall of fame...

    They need to take the vote away from these nerdy sports writers and form a committee of senior former players! Jim Marshall would've been in years ago. He was well respected amongst his peers!

    There's several things Marshall has going against him. He's been nominated several times and has'nt made the cut. Last time his name came up was during the time Eller got in. The more time passes the more recent players come to mind and the more he gets passed up. Another big issue is he only has 2 probowls to his credit, and that was during the pre merger days ( East vs West, when you're chosen from the best DE of 6 teams ). The wrong way run has nothing to do with it. Say what you want, it was an exercise in hustle. The biggest issue is NO tackles in SB XI. THAT is his downfall, not to mention what the guy says right here. It took several letters and campaigns to get both Eller and Krause in. But listen to this, totally legit 0:58

      Not Alan Page, Ron Yary, Fran Tarkenton, Chris Doleman, John Randle, Gary Zimmermann, Paul Krause, Bobby Bryant, Mick Tingelhoff, Chuck Foreman, Ahmad Rashad, Randy Moss, Cris Carter, Adrian Peterson, Steve Hutchinson, or Matt Blair?
      He's not even the greatest Viking at his POSITION (Eller, Doleman, Keith Millard, Jared Allen).

      Xavier Vega, true. Excellent MLB in the 70s. Reminds me of the late Tommy Nobis. Kind of player who was great in his time but is sadly forgotten as the years go by. So overlooked that neither of them made a list of players who should be in the Hall. But a special teams player does?

    The stupidity of that sportswriter is beyond comprehension. Judging a 20 year career solely on four games! The guy should have his voting privileges revoked. To lose four Super Bowls, you have to reach four of them. Dan Marino, Jim Kelly and Kenny Anderson never won a SB. Warren Moon, George Blanda, Eric Dickerson, Earl Campbell and Dan Fouts never even played in one. Does Russo question their credentials?
