Not sure about this. In my experience people that are really poor are from indigenous regions where education is inexistent. They move to the cities and stay poor for generations. The problem that persist is the class mobility, moving from being poor to medium class, it is only possible with education and it takes at least two generations. The problem that you mention about the color skin it is more common in the government and any position that involves social skills. These people are not merely “light skinned”. They are completely of European descent and they definitely enforce the boundaries of their social class. In many ways this group is like a caste.

Interestingly enough, in India, educational institutions are the playgrounds for caste oppression. Marginalised caste students are terrorised and alienated by dominant caste b*st*rds, due to which dropping out and s*icides are commonplace.
Actually "Institutional Education" often creates its own forms of prejudice; the smarts vs the stupid. I used to tutor a brilliant student from an average public-school for math competitions. He used to tell me how the kids from rich townships or private schools would look down on him even when he won.

Just because you haven't experienced caste based discrimination doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I haven't faced caste discrimination directed towards me but I have seen it happening many times. Honestly, everyone speaks their mind but only in their safe space because they know it has been criminalised and saying something casteist will put them in trouble. So, they usually never say it in public but I a group where there are only upper caste people (Our last names indicate our caste you don't even need to ask someone's caste to know their caste. You know when you are in the safe space). The most common is I would say usage of casteist slurs. This happened when I was in college. One of my very senior professor, whom I used to respect a lot because he was so good at teaching his subject (he always sounded like a wise, smart old man), used a casteist slur against SC people and said we should never pass through the area where they live as they are untouchables. I was stunned but everyone was normal as if nothing happened. Second and another most common thing I hear is when people say that SC people can never excel in studies as this is not their "fitrat", unka dimag kabhi padhai me lagega nahi kyunki unki formation hi different Hui hai, different kaam k liye Hui hai (here they were talking about the low academic performance of many SC kids ignoring that most of them come from underprivileged homes). Another very common casteist/classist act is keeping separate utensils for maids, some societies even have separate lifts for them. Here also, I hear a lot that people don't want a cook from an SC caste because they doubt their cleanliness habits. Talk to the aunties in your society, this as actually very common. Apart from this, there are many incidents in news on casteism. It is a superiority complex that is never going to end. If you ask an upper caste person to ditch their caste indicative last name they will most likely refuse. On the contrary, you will see people flaunting their caste on vehicles. No, flaunting caste on vehicle is not discrimination but that shows the superiority complex the person has in their mind.

WE INDIANS CAN NEVER LEAVE BEHIND THE CASTE SYSTEM & CASTE DISCRIMINATIONS.
Caste is somewhat equal to racism. It's existence is reality. People on the receiving end should handle it objectively and smartly instead of stupid/blind wokery

Indians are getting rid of caste discrimination, Americans are adopting it! Brave New World, indeed. If there are a number of dalits in America, it speaks volumes for the absence of caste discrimination in the Indian educational system. This person is an anachronism in her own lifetime.
Kshama you are doing great service to oppressed caste all the love and support to you.

In Hinduism caste is one's occupation and is not decided by birth
Hinduism without caste is basically Sikhism.

Thanks a lot for bringing this up... coz in the west Hinduism is projected differently... let them know what is actually going on... the west is fed with sugarcoated lies... but in reality many people suffer due to this caste discrimination... let people treat everyone equally...
Yes let's tell all westerners how bad Hindus are
Correct, they need to know it's actually originated from their own religion
At the top of the hierarchy were the Brahmins who were mainly teachers and intellectuals and are believed to have come from Brahma's head. Then came the Kshatriyas, or the warriors and rulers, supposedly from his arms. The third slot went to the Vaishyas, or the traders, who were created from his thighs. At the bottom of the heap were the Shudras, who came from Brahma's feet and did all the menial jobs.Outside of this Hindu caste system were the achhoots - the Dalits or the untouchables.

This is awesome. However another way of discrimination is based on community. Indians also discriminate based on which community you are from. That is another aspect that must be looked into.

So is it okay for Europeans to discriminate against Indians?
They start crying when they taste their own medicine.
I find it fascinating, yet idiotic, how humans always find a way to look down on someone, even when they look the same.

Let's go all in ,let's assign previlege to all religions from tribes ,caste ,creed if it is about ending discrimination.
Better still, get rid of religion, it's primitive superstition that is fundamentally anti-science. It's judgemental, controlling, manipulative, misogynistic, and just an excuse for many people to behave like bigots. And poor old India is utterly benighted with its religiosity and backwards superstition!
It's the same as how White people treat Native Americans, Native Canadians Aboriginals and Africans.. caste system wasn't that rigid before the invasions started in India.. and invaders started radicalizing the upper castes who were skilled in mathematics and language,, while started discriminating the people who were skilled in construction etc..
Mughals started dividing Hindus, but British one step ahead of them, bcz British were no strangers to caste system.. London and Scotland had worst level of caste system. Which still exists, but nobody talks about it, bcz Canada Australia New Zealand USA, are still run by British, and Britain and America being a British country itself, has the largest media coverage across globe.. so it's easy for them to block the Anti British statements..

What I see will happen in US as most upper cast have migrated due to their access to education and money and hence were able migrate from India. And they have gotten into prominent positions in businesses, corporates, institutions both private and public and now you start to see them in politics too. I'm afraid now that they identify them as adhering to Aryans and they find allies with folks in the US who are also of similar thoughts. They will further segregate themselves from south Asian population and further discriminate. It is sad but it will happen and is happening. One way of spotting the once who are definitely going to be problem is to check whether they are members of fringe groups such as RSS or not which equivalent to Taliban like in India.
