- Our first day on the road in Chongqing. We head to Fengjie, home of the first of the three gorges and an ancient temple called Badicheng. Join us for some fantastic views, culture, humor and the hottest wonton you have ever seen.
The poem on Baidicheng: Departing from Baidi in the Morning
This morning, I depart the town of Baidi, engulfed by vibrant clouds.
I return to far away Jiangling within a single day!
From both banks, the steady sound of shrieking monkeys fills the air.
Our little boat has already carried me past thousands of hilltops.

You think my drone segments went a little long? Have you ever seen Wonton so red?
Drone segments can never be too long, and about that wonton... Not even Mexican Pozole is that red... Believe me, haha
No, not too long but the red in those noodles made by sphincter twitch
And you asked permission, nobody gets in trouble❤️❤️❤️
love the drone bit!!
Drone , no drone , 1hr drone vid 1hr no drone vid. What ever suits u man love the vids :) much appreciate it all
@JaYoe Mexicanos en China once again, it was great to talk to you man. Thanks for the inspiration and hopefully you can see a little bit of the influence in our videos one day. Hope that bike gets to you soon haha Cheers!!!
(17:55) This very famous poem was composed by Tang dynasty poet Li Bai in the year 759 AD, when sailing on the Yangtze river from Baidi, Sichuan province to Jiangling, Hubei province. The calligraphy of the same poem on each stone plate was done by one previous chairman/prime minister of China.
There are four phrases in the poem :
Departed Baidi (mountain) among the clouds, early in the morning,
A thousand miles journey to Jiangling in one day,
As the apes screech continuous on both sides,
The light boat has already passed through ten thousand layers of mountain.
“As the apes screech continuous on both sides,
The light boat has already passed through ten thousand layers of mountain”
These two lines are now often quoted to describe China-us relations, of course, USA just is the ape.
This poem is famous in China,Korea and Japan

Thanks to you guys again for showing us around. And thanks also to ichongqing for the opportunities. Your footages help us to know more about places in China and how accessible it is. Now we have an opportunity to plan a getaway in China as we know more and more each time from the 'blessed' expats in China. No media would ever give us these insights. Thanks a million guys. Jiayou!!!
The water level in the river is so high that has changed the landscape from what I saw some 30 years ago and from the picture on the ten yuan note of RMB. Imagine if there was no dam, all these water could have washed all the land downstream. Now it has saved so much lives and economy.
Nice to see the dust blow off and the Drone out..JaYoe
I took the 4-day downriver tour from Chongqing to Wuhan in 1997, which was the last tour before they.diverted the river for the dam construction. I saw all the villages, factories and shrines before they were submerged. Also saw the new villages being constructed above the 175 mtr. level. Amazing trip.
Haha, me too. Summer of 97.
@@jayzfd I only remember the boat was about 3 levels. We had Tai Chi lessons and Karaoke. We stopped many times to visit the villages and see the shrines. A really great experience.
The Dragon reminds me of Loch Ness, this is so cool to see the gorges and I am so happy you asked permission to fly the drone
Thank you for drones. It's probably the best invention for travellers nowadays. I've gone on a Yangtze Three Gorges cruise years ago, before the dam was completely built and running, all we saw on the cruise ship was just the never ending river and the cilffs alongside the river. Never did we get to see what the drones are allowing us to see now. What wondrous scenery.
I totally understand. Amazing.
My wife and I will definitely be going to Chongqing for a few weeks or Months, when we get back to China... Love your Videos....
Matthew, this video narration is very good. You are photogenic and your voice is clear. You are sort of funny, serious and entertaining. That is what I believe your subscribers like. Your videos sure have commercial value. Keep it up.
Haha that region is basically a natural stairmaster. If you get a chance go to Zhangjiajie, Hunan and climb up to Heaven's Gate 999 steps. Great video, I can't wait to go back there next summer. Endless valleys and gorges to explore.
The planning for me was this year to go to Zhangjiajie. Last year I already want to go there, but instead I was invited to go with my friend her father and sister to go to Sanya. I not regret to go there instead of Zhangjiajie because I had a great time in Sanya, it is a beautiful place. But because we go there last year, we planned to go to Zhangjiajie this year. But of course that is not possible because of the virus now. I hope I can go there next year now. For now I stay my summer Holliday in my own country, but of course I try to see some video's about China to have a little the idea I am in China. Hehe... Of course it is not really the same as to be there myself, but there is no other way this year. Hopefully I can travel to China next year again.
@Just Awesome ya Matt is not about the hate in either direction. I like his level headed approach and pretty much followed what he and Gweilo60 did during covid. I left China the day after Matt, went back to Canada and put all my things in storage, did my taxes, warned my family and gave them all masks (they still didn't know why yet thanks to Trudumb) and got my ass back to China and away from the coming insanity. Anyone that actually comes to China will see how much better it can be if they actually are open to it here.
@@goudvismannetje its well worth it. Once there you will need a few days minimal. The park itself is huge with multiple gondolas and so much area to hike around to view the mountain scene from Avatar. The journey up Tianmen mountain is a real treat. Again gondola has replaced the old bus route with 99 turns but once you get to the top of the first gondola you still have those 999 steps to go up to Heaven's Gate. Once through the gate the majestic valley opens up on the other side and you go up more escalators to the mountain top. It's parkland up there with several glass bottom bridges with sheer cliff dropoffs. The gondola ride down takes 30 minutes and leaves you in the heart of downtown Zhangjiajie where tons of great restaurants are. Simply breathtaking and awesome. I've been to Banff, hiked Donner pass, Loveland pass and the Alps and this was even more incredible imo.
Spicy wonton will keep things interesting look at that wonderful red sauce! Aerial drone footage is FANTASTIC !
26 years ago, I was taking a cruise from Chongqing to Wuhan. 轻舟已过万重山, time also flying so fast.
I did the same thing that year, with my classmate, unbelievable!
Ha this made me laugh a lot seeing it back from your perspective! When you zoomed in on the random guys weird belt situation I LOL'd hard 😂
Awesome video...fantastic drone shots, great companionship, lively chats and great fun...thanks for sharing.
Extremely scenic and informative! JaYoe
Hi aunt Kath! How are you and Gary?
So far we are staying safe and feeling grateful. It's fun seeing all of you at play and doing what you love!
The drone footage was amazing !!!
Wow! What a view!!! That looks like an amazing tour.
Made my mouth watering !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and that"s got a nice kick ,
When that tour guide said "Bling Bling" and you replied "Bling Bling" I was on the floor laughing, I didn't expect her to say that. O how Hip Hop Slang has spread to the far parts of the world gotta love it.
hi, Matt, I got the same red color luggage case which you are using. Watching your video very enjoyable. For me, it is virtual tour following your video! Thanks! Really amazing place definitely worth to visit!
There was a basketball court on the 200 steps mark out of 700. I played with some locals when I was visiting baidicheng in 1997. It's under water now.
WOW... so interesting... its still there... crazy
Loving the drone shots from all you China vloggers... Adds a new dimension to things!
Fantastic visuals and a unique history from this area . Nice too that everyone seemed to have alot of fun . The shirt that Alex had on was kind of appropriate , Why so serious . lol ..Jayoe
Wow, Matt really did some research on the scene he is showing, I never thought about this much of water can slow down the earth !! How cool is that !!
it is a rumor😂,you believed that?
Hi Matt, I suggest you to visit the Three Gorges by the cruise trip start from Chongqing to Shanghai next time, and also can experience the Three Gorges Dam cruise ship elevator.
What a view! You rock man!
appreciate nice vlog Matt and team..
7:00. The dumpling looks so tasty! wow! I love Chinese dumpling very much!
Bravo! it used be like passing thru the river between narrow cliffs, now the river becomes wide and open, completely different feeling.
hahaha you told the driver to jiayou, and he replied okay, thinking it is not time to pump it up yet.😃
Lol that question mark at that dudes dress code xD well played sir
This video and bgm reminds me that poetry by Libai...
Matthew, your drone segments are not long despite 27.01 minutes. You have narrated and edited it very well. It is very entertaining with scenic places, jokes, hotpots, drone shots, temples, hanging coffins, skeletons, dynasty history and your good buddies. Your lady guide in-fact try singing "Hey Jude". You make something mundane to be interesting. I enjoy your video very much.
the tour translator is abit hard to understand but Matt is such a pure hearted person thx for the videos its pretty interesting
Ella Shy yea. I should have put subtitles. Live and learn. You can see the poem she read in the description of you could not understand.
@@JaYoeNation no its not your fault I'm just pointing out that it is China and although many chinese now speak good English some are still native speakers I could understand most part of it if I listen carefully hehe and ma la (sichuan) chili is too hot for me as well xDD
I still remember the day when I was five(1995) my parents took me to the big boat just go through the three gorges(from wuhan to chongqing) the day we pass the Baidi temple, it is way more higher than the footage you’ve shoot by the drone. It is like go between two huge walls. Fascinating.
Wow. I wondered that!
I did it when you are 3 years old, haha
Steve Yao wow. I bet it looked so different then.
It is nice to see it from the top.
I believe the wise man statue is representing Zhuge Liang. The two brothers are sworn brothers, I saw one statue with its introducing card 'Zhang Fei', so another one shall be 'Guan Yu'. Logically, the statue which facing the door shall be 'Liu Bei', and he was sworn brother of Zhang and Guan. Therefore, the story stands on Three Kingdoms.
Statues inside the Ming Liang Hall (19:37) are key figures during the Three Kingdoms period (220-280 A.D.) :-
(20:03) Liu Bei, king of the Shu Han kingdom.
(20:00) Zhuge Liang, a.k.a. Kongming, chief strategist and chief minister of Shu Han.
(20:06) Guan Yu (right, long beard), Zhang Fei (left), generals of Shu Han.
Guan Yu probably has the most statues of any Chinese historic person. He represents loyalty and righteousness. Usually portrayed holding the long handle Green Dragon Crescent Blade.
Zhuge Liang is one of the two most famous strategists in historic China.
The kingdom of Shu Han was in the southwest part of China including Sichuan and Yunnan province, and part of Shaanxi and Guizhou province.
Check out the movie Red Cliff (2008) for some of their stories.
Thanks for the video. I think this one was the for a long time. With a relaxed Matt and informativ content.
Great Video, some great drone work gives you a good perspective of the river and surroundings.
Thanks for showing us around. Such cool drone footage as always. Keep eating that red sauce and you Going to be running to the creak like a bear!
Really cool
I so happy to watch this video, because normally around this time I would be in China. Because of the virus I can't this year, so it is nice to see something about China this way. 😉 I only still curious what equipment you al use. I not know if there are vlog video's from you about that what you normally use. I am that curious because I want to buy a camera myself, but still not really know what is the best for me to use. For now I am thinking about the Canon eos M50.
the EOS 50 is a great camera.. but i use a Canon g7x mark III.... you can see my gear on my website Jayoe.com.. go to the store and all my stuff is there.
@@JaYoeNation Thanks, I now look to what most vloggers use for equipment so I can compare some things to find out what I can use. I'm not a vlogger I want to use mostly for private use, but you never know I will vlog in future. Hehe... I already see lot of your vlogs. I'm most interested in the vlogs about China. I can not explain but from the first time I have been to China, China interest me very much. You can say in a way I fall in love with the country, and the people. I made some friends, in China and I try to visit them every year. Last year I visit Sanya with my friend and her father and sister. This year I was supposed to visit Zhangjiajie with her, and maybe her mother would go with us. But you understand that is not possible this year, hopefully next year. I hope than I have some good equipment to film and make good pictures, because I want to go there for few years now so I want to have some good captured memories on film and pictures. Although I hear maybe it is not allowed to take a cam with you if you go in to the forest park. So than I only can film with the mobile phone, but maybe that is already changed because you now can make the most beautiful video's and pictures with your mobile phone as well, so maybe they allow cameras too now. Because for the quality of video and pictures it not really matters anymore some phones have also very good quality. But maybe there is a other reason why they not allow cameras in to the park. But I will hear and see when we go there finally.
But go on with the good work, I like your video's especially now I not can go to China myself. 😉👍
great to see your travel vlogs. interesting
16:58 Spectacular view.
Hey! Matt and Jim. 👋👋👋👍🏽
This is a wonderful video. I think if it was not in the flooding season, the scenery would look more beautiful.
Too bad you can't eat spicy. Chongqing is my dream place for touring. Thanks for the video!
I am thoroughly enjoying this travel oriented video.
thank you very much 加油
Baidicheng , Liu Bei the 1st king of Shu ( Romance of 3 Kingdoms) died there
你这中国历史懂得不少啊,厉害!👍
Why is it most Chinese will take a look at this gate named "White King City" (11:52) and immediately recall the famous poem by Li Bai (701-762 C.E.) (17:20) That's the power of poetry, common culture, and early mandatory education in Chinese literature. Chinese poems are memorized by school kids. The poems stay with you the whole life, even if just a line or two decades later. The poems connect you to those ancient time, places that only exist in words. Fortunately with online search it is easy to look up the half forgotten words. Chinese will probably look at the scenery of the gorges and rivers a bit differently to foreign visitors, colored by poetic imagination.
This is really amazing scenery, thump up.
What beautiful view from the sky
I was cruising through the three gorges last October the water was blue ! And thousands tourists were in Baidi city 白帝城
A...mazing. I envy you guys.

oh great poem.
i think that wonton soup is called "long chao shou" there
Long chao shou is in Chengdu, but they’re quite similar.
20:38 did they have Mountain Dew back then? Good question 😂
The tour guide’s English is good but with very strong local accent 😂😂really hard to understand
I can hardly understand 10% of her English - sounded like gibberish to me!
Actually, her Mandarin also has a very strong accent. 😅
Did you go to thew Tiger leaping Gorge and the frozen Waterfalls ? Great Vid ! NEver too much Aerials for my taste
so beautiful
Major mistake from the tour guide - those poems were not written by Mao/Zhou/Jiang - they were just calligraphy of the same poem from none other than 李白 (Li Bai). The carvings of these poems should have clarified poets and calligraphers. To not even mention Li Bai is just wrong. It saddens me (not really a big deal ;) that such historic significance of this trip is lost.
1300 years ago, the greatest Tang poet, Li Bai, took this same trip, from the same starting point that Matt's drone video-recorded - Bai Di Temple. His trip prompted the composition of arguably the most-quoted poem of all time in Chinese history - "Departing Bai Di Temple" - shown at the beginning in calligraphy from Mao, Zhou, and Jiang. Let me try my lame translation :) Don't laugh -
Bidding farewell to Bai Di in the glory of the dawn
Home in a day from a thousand-mile river cruise
Amid the sounds of monkey screeching
The dinghy had sailed through endless mountains
And today, some white dudes followed the foot steps of Li Bai - Enjoy what the tour guide left out ;)
This happens too often in Chinese tourism industry!
It happens..you can't expect all tour guides to be college literature graduates and extremely fluent in English... I had trouble understanding her English as well as her accented Mandarin...
Amy Ding I don’t have expectation that a tour guide knows everything. That poem is from Chinese textbook, likely from middle school. Neither This one mistake nor this guide is the problem, the general attitude towards mistake is a concern for me.
@@MrGuitar1975 i agree she should have done better job. A junior kid at elementary school even knows the poem.
@@amyding5282 IKR couldn't understand much of her translation, interesting that her Mandarin is also very accented. Is the Mandarin there hard to understand?
oh its really nice to see Kodak 4*5 film again, its so hard to find right now, what camera does jim use?im using Sinar P2.
2:03 maybe I understood what's your means~😂
Quick question...did you see any monkey like the poem says?
This place where was Shuhan Emperor, Liubei entrusted Zhu Geliang to take care his son .
Tourism seems to have dropped 99%. Been there twice and had to elbow people aside to take photos of the iconic scene.

Hello mate, I'd just like to know if it's still raining over there now ? Also is the water level of the 3 gorges dam ok? Thank you .
From what I’ve heard the level is managed and back down. Don’t know exactly but there is flooding other places in China. Unrelated

it is already opened, since COVID19 is well controlled in china

ChongQing is heavily flooded from news, but I did not see it from your video.
bc Matt shot his video before that flood. And ur NEWS, that was about 2 weeks ago. Matt made e a live on it, check his channel.
just for few days, rain stop, flood goes

The water is full of sand and dirt thats why the river looks so muddy. Hope they've come up with plan to fix it already. The Three Gorges deserve to be more gorgeous.
it is rainning season, it is clean after rain stops
Question Matt, why is the river so brown and not a beautiful blue?
rainning season, more sand and dirt in water
What a brilliant idea to harness water for energy, but when it goes wrong, it’s wrong bigtime
It is great to take a flight, but if the plane crashes, you will not have a chance to regret.
