Why is Mathematics so Unreasonably Effective in Physics ? I Dr. Pervez Hoodbhoy

  • "The Unreasonable Effectiveness of Mathematics in the Natural Sciences" is the title of an article published in 1960 by the physicist Eugene Wigner. In the paper, Wigner observed that the mathematical structure of a physical theory often points the way to further advances in that theory and even to empirical predictions.
Wigner begins his paper with the belief, common among those familiar with mathematics, that mathematical concepts have applicability far beyond the context in which they were originally developed. Based on his experience, he says "it is important to point out that the mathematical formulation of the physicist's often crude experience leads in an uncanny number of cases to an amazingly accurate description of a large class of phenomena". He then invokes the fundamental law of gravitation as an example. Originally used to model freely falling bodies on the surface of the earth, this law was extended on the basis of what Wigner terms "very scanty observations" to describe the motion of the planets, where it "has proved accurate beyond all reasonable expectations".

Well illustrated with insightful examples! In my experience, complex numbers have been useful but not absolutely necessary. For example, Maxwell equations can lead to electromagnetic waves, whose amplitude can be represented by A*cos(wt-kz) or real part of A*exp(iwt-kz). The mathematics is simpler when we multiply complex exponentials instead of trignometric functions. But it is not necessary to use complex numbers to derive real results.

Sir, you are mind blowing ! Mathematics is invented but we have to first define what is an invention. An invention is reproducing something by using the laws of nature and the structures of nature. It is just a language of the physics and of course physics is the basis of all sciences !! Physics is the knowledge of the existence. No nature means no physics and therefore to describe the structure and function of the existence we need mathematics. Existence is built in mathematics and according to Max Tegmark all the existence is matter which is written in mathematics!!

I am strongly disagree with you sir on the matter of discovery or inventer. Let me clear my opinion why i say that, Newtonian gravity can't explained the einstine gravity concept. But einstine can explain newton. So those principal discovered in nature, it be exist before newton and einstine. It's our problem we can't understand them. And second we are prograssive with scientific, at newton time our understand moreover on classic, then we further goes with time and accept with quantum principle. Let an example set of (1-10) digits are exist with set of (1-100) digits but vice versa are not whole truth. same way like (1-10) are classic and (1-100) are quantum. So In mathematics inventing word cann't be used, because it before we understand it.

Unfortunately the title is "reasonably" misleading and the presenter doesn't know that mathematics is not based on mann-gharat (من گھڑت) stories (what he is telling or probably always tells!), instead it is based on 100% precision and logical arguments. Without going into detail one can even see his lack of knowledge through his discussion on Andrew Wiles, who NEVER received a Fields Medal. His lecture also reminds me a tale of 'blind men and an elephant'.
