I love watching your videos and learning. I grew up on a small dairy farm in the central valley of California. I have helped since I was small to repair farm equipment and done many repairs and repairs on repairs. I have learned that two pieces of metal will rust between and swell and either rust through or bulge and crack or both. So now I paint the metal (there is weld through primer or galvanized paint is supposed to work which is what I use) and I put "speed holes " in the fish plates. I weld the top solid and most of the ends (not the top or bottom), the bottom I do stitch welds to let moisture drain and on the speed holes I weld the mostly vertical sections leaving top and bottom open. The original crack is put between holes. Anyway it seems to work for me. However, I'm not a professional welder and I have not done a thousand. But the repairs I have done stayed really good. Also, not all my ideas, but what I have seen and learned from what I've seen, been told and seen first hand myself. I just wanted to pass along what I have learned. I don't know if I explained it very well. I wish I could draw a picture on here to show exactly what I am talking about. Thank you for your insight and tips.

The fun part about welding repairs is that every repair job is different and presents its own challenges. And when it’s a repair with many different angles horizontal vertical flat and over head combined. Regardless of how long one has be in the industry. Sometimes there is a tricky weld that will test your ability. And that one tested you and you made it look good 👍

Austin , your videos are out standing I have learned a lot from you , I was watching you struggle on that vertical up point on the (FLITCH ) Plate some times we forget to bend the rod to your will , the rod does what you need it to do . some times bending that rod 3 inch down to make that rod work for you is the answer any way thanks for taking the time to make these videos. Flitch Plate (a Metal plate sandwiched between planks in forming a flitch beam or girder..

Start small, tell yr friends and relatives that you do side work and build up to it, while at the same time, build your skills, inch by inch life is a sinch, yard by yard life is very very hard.

I recently welded some 2×4 tubing back together because one of those broke (used as forks on a tractor). I planned this type of project out, the forks were about 4 feet 6 in. And I put 3 foot stiffeners on both side of each fork. 1.5 in. On one side 3/16 thick and otherside a 1/4in. On each fork. Didn't cut angles and I welded them solid all 4 sides. And put 5 holes in the 1/4" and plugged them. Also added 4, seven inch plates, 2 on top and bottom and welded those solid with plug welds. So does that weaken the 2×4 tubing? Fixed the original problem best I could. This video helped me see where I might have made some mistakes. Thanks for sharing!

Im just wondering if its already late for me to make welding a career. BTW i really like your videos it helps me a lot when my instructor/teacher doesn't make sense at times :) I hope you can read this and enlightened me thanks and more power to you my good Sir!

I sure would like to see you do some detailed videos about fish plate welding. It would be nice to see more info about this repair method that could help many people. While you mention rounding the edges, it seems that is mucho important in the technique. So many shade tree welders have their methods, but it would be interesting to see how you approach the thought process about the setup (cutting the brace/plate) and deciding how to decide the travel direction of the welds.
Just think of it as an excuse for you to get in more practice!

I've seen someone do a repair on a large excavator where they were told to weld about 3 inches past the end of the fish plate without welding around the radius of the plate
The engineers said it made the repair less likely to crack at the end of the plate

You can try putting a bevel on the bottom of that fish plate, might make it easier.

That position even gets me sometimes with a flux core welding tip which is pretty tight access. it is trying to go against the laws of physics. Kudos for trying this with a stick machine. Lol, happy holidays Dangle that carrot and a welder will try to grab it forever.

That bottom edge when you can only go straight in as you had to is a real pain with 7018. 3 passes letting each one cool helps but on some stuff the evil warpage comes in to play

As much as i try to avoid it, some jobs require welding new plate up to old very very pitted old plate (youll be chasing your tail if you try to remove it all) and it always puts up a hard fight till the end! Would love to see how you handle that situation! The worst one ive faced was 3/16” plate with up to a 1/8” gap at some points.

    Glad I found this channel.
Could you explain why you cut both corners off the fish plate instead of just cutting to length on a diagonal? I'm assuming it is stronger somehow as a diagonal cut saves a little time and material.
    Thanks.
