    15:59 that electrolytic capacitor in the top left corner looks bulged. Due to it's proximity to the power connector and it's large size (larger capacitance) I would say it's a power supply filter capacitor. The capacitor further back and to the right doesn't look too good either.
    If a capacitor is bulged it has failed and should be replaced. Excessive ripple from bad capacitors can cause all kinds of weird issues.
    They can also leak electrolyte from the rubber bung on the bottom and corrode traces on the PCB over time.

    I would recommend wrapping it in cling film. When you put it out to retrobrite in the sun. Stops the chemical from evaporating, it lasts longer and is more effective. As always love the video. These videos have helped me a lot. In reconditioning my retro consoles.

    A fun and relatively cheap console to collect for. Hori made aftermarket controllers that use the front port if cord length is an issue.

    I'm surprised you still leave your plastics out to air-dry. Maybe it's the water in my area, but whenever I air-dry my plastics, they come out a bit splotchy from whatever else floats around in tap-water. A quick use of a hand towel is all I need to make sure that doesn't happen.
    Edit: to clarify, it's mostly noticeable on clear plastics.

    Great cleaning video, as always! It definitely doesn't look like the Famicom has as many layers, so to speak, inside of it as the front-loading NES does. Of course with the NES, you have the RF shielding.

    I'm curious as to why you use Windex to clean your cartridges? Seems to work fine, but I started using rubbing alcohol and now use either 91% or 99% isopropyl alcohol.

    • @AdamKoralik
      @AdamKoralik  6 років тому +8

      I find rubbing alcohol to leave a film and require more frequent recleans.

      I have two video requests if your okay with it. ^^
      1) I know you aren't exactly the biggest fan of the Nintendo Wii, and I respect that, but can you do a cleaning/restoring video on the original Wii?
      2) Can you do a room tour showing your consoles, games and how you have it all setup? ^^

    • @RETROGAMINGARTS
      @RETROGAMINGARTS 6 років тому

      i'm with you on the 91% iso, although adam is correct it does require more frequent recleans as he said, but they still work SO well, and it's ok, the game stores that i do repairs for use brasso/91%/and windex aswell. it may be a matter of preference now a days

    • @zsleepspeachz
      @zsleepspeachz 6 років тому

    Baking soda works best to remove mild marks and is less aggressive to the plastics than magic eraser. I would use one of those just as a last resource. Great video as always Adam. Keep-up the good work.

    basically Adam's method for cleaning consoles-
    *take it apart, clean the plastic bits.
    *get a q-tip and windex to get out dust from ports and such.
    *Blow out dust with compressed air.
    *Wait for the plastic bits to dry, and reassemble it.
    *Finish it off by wiping some Pledge on it.

  • @LordRayken

    Hey Adam, I've been hearing through various sources lately that the "Retrobrite" de-yellowing is actually ending up damaging the plastic further and making stuff crack easier. I have no idea how the salon care stuff compares, but something you may want to look up.

  • @RobinHoodFox74

    Wow, I literally just got a Famicom and you posted this video. I’m also debating whether to try to do the AV mod on my own as a challenge and a potentially rewarding experience or to ask someone else to do it (who actually knows what they’re doing haha). Beautiful system in my opinion, love the red and gold controllers

    I've seen people whining about the de-yellowing process on a few forums. Have you noticed the plastic becoming brittle after de-yellowing it, or is that some sort of internet lore? I've never done this myself, but you always impress me when you do this.

    • @AdamKoralik
      @AdamKoralik  6 років тому +1

    • @rsmith02

    I would think that a high percentage of isopropyl alcohol would be a safer bet for electronics contacts. Been using it for some time. Of course, careful choice of cleaning products depending on the parts and materials to be cleaned should always be made.

    Hi Adam, I do want to type to you about how Astronomicon went, it was good, but saddening. I know that you were not on the special guest list (and also the weather was absolutely shitty), but some day you will come to Michigan. The biggest (only) reason I was there (don't get me wrong, it was really fun and also signifies the first time me and my friend played the 3DO) because of one Angry Video Game Nerd (and Mike Matei) and they did not show up because of that DAMN WEATHER!!! So that made a little angry (no pun intended). It was cool to see The Game Chasers there (even though I don't watch their content at all). As always, great content Adam.

And than cool down after appx. 2 hours youll get the same resault. No need to wait 4 days but you do wanna have thermometer because if it ill reach boiling the plastic could melt.

    I found a guide on a site that shows how to brighten an original white PC Engine by soaking it in pure bleach for up to a day. The pictures look pretty impressive. What are your thoughts on this? Would it be safe to do on a Famicom?
