Thanks a lot for such an extensive insight. This and a previous video do answer a lot of the questions I've been struggling to figure for a while now.

Interesting that of all the upgrades you can get such a difference in noise for just £15.96! I’d have never even thought about changing the fan. Also, the difference between the £600 base unit and the £1000 unit - the omission of Thunderbolt 3 bolts ports is probably commercially rather clever. I imagine most people night just pick up on the 1gb-10gb spec gap. I wonder if the Quiet - Normal - Performance modes make much difference in terms of power consumption too. I like the fact you at least have the choice of configuring those anyway. Impressive kit.

Ha, yeah, the cheap frans .....Someone mentioned it to me about the QNAP and once it was in my head it was too hard to un-hear. I've power meters on all of this kit so I can recharge the cost of running. I can't imagine the fan would make a lot of difference though...? I'd imagine the drives spinning up/down would make more of a difference. Not sure, curious now, I'll have a look.

Hi and thank you for the great video! Could you let me know what the temps are on your m.2 nvme ssd's during heavy usage? Also, how did you place the thermal pads on the ssd's on installation? I'm using osx and windows 10 through bootcamp. win 10 recognizes the 10gb port and connects no problem, but osx doesn't recognize the 10gb port, more accurately, it just says "disconnected" in virtual networks and switches, though it does have an ip. Really looking for any advice or help! Thank you!

Great video. I appreciate the level of detail in both this and the OWC Thunderbay 4 vid. I was curious, though, were there any other reasons you went with the QNAP system versus upgrading your Synology to one of their units that offered 10Gbe? I've just purchased a Synology and plan to use it in a similar way as you (I think), and I was definitely worried about speeds using the 1Gbe but thought I could maybe get by for a year or two until I could afford to upgrade. I'm pretty green when it comes to this stuff, but I'm learning more about with the help of channels like yours! Thanks again.

Glad it's helpful! I get to play with some cool stuff so thought it would be good to share.
Hi - Ref Synology vs QNAP - no, no real choice other than I haven't really used QNAP stuff before, and I like tech so thought I'd give them a go. The Synology units I had didn't support 10Gbe so they would have been replacement units anyway. Another sway on the decision was that 10Gbe ports are expensive, and I've had to upgrade my 10Gbe switch. By getting the QNAP with 2 x TB3 ports my iMac Pro and main Mac Mini server could connect direct over TB3, and I haven't had to upgrade the 10Gbe switch.
The QNAP is certainly a lot more fussy in terms of setup than the Synology by the way.
Also the Synology does support link aggregation by the way, so if you have multiple machines connecting to it perhaps look at get that setup? You won't get faster than 1Gbe connecting for a single machine, but it does mean you can have multiple m/cs connecting at approaching 1Gbe speeds.
It's a fairly dry subject so hard to present, but have a look see here to see what I mean: ua-cam.com/video/TWPeJPWkaw4/v-deo.html

Hey man, so I've got the TS-453BT3, and when I go to create a New Volume the 1TB NVME SSD do not show up as being available for setup. I searched around and thought that because they were 1TB NVME that they would not be compatible with the NAS (after doing research and compatibility checks on the QNAP site), I then went purchased slower 1TB m.2 SSD, and they still do not show up as being available in the New Volume drop down menu. Do I need to install drivers or am I doing something else wrong? Would appreciate any and all tips guy. Thanks
