    as a creator who's gotten about 37 creator points over the last year or so, even before i started creating in gd fully and mainly used gdpses, i've had a really rough creating history over the last few years, even since i started, and a lot of that just came from me not really being all too willing to listen to other people's (useful) feedback and overall just feeling like i wouldn't ever be a good creator because so many other people make stuff much better than i did.
    i think this video does a really good job at going over things that people end up naturally doing because they're a small creator, even if their levels show a ton of promise, creativity, and potential. as an improving creator myself, i would totally recommend avoiding the mistakes talked about in this video as well, and embracing just being you in the editor!!! theres so many cool and awesome things you can do in the editor, don't let your imagination go to waste trying to impress other people, just make stuff you enjoy!!
    big thanks for letting me help out for a small portion of this video too, and I hope this catches the attention of small creators, as someone who's been a small unnoticed creator for quite a while now as well. :) ⭐

    The finding inspiration part was such a game changer when I realized I could get inspired by stuff outside of GD. Anime, manga, album covers, mood boards, even the music I use, all play a huge role in the levels I make nowadays

    As a creator in gd myself I absolutely agree to all of these, a few years ago when I was creating more and had time to create levels more often I used to compare myself with other creators as well and like you said in this video it helps with inspiration but then you start losing that motivation and start getting burnt out and having to quit creating for some time and so I learned not to compare my creations all the time, show my creations more often to people, and take criticism in a more respectful manner. :)

    I've had MANY failed attempts at building levels, and I was on the brink of just giving up and moving on to only beating other levels. But this video changed my mind, even if it takes 1000 more failed attempts, I want to be a good level builder, and as long as I get feedback from more experienced players, and don't compare myself to better creators, I think I can get there. Thanks for the video!

    thanks for making this video. ive been "working" on a level for a friend's gdps that ill later upload to gd and i insist on finishing in 2.1 but i barely have the time to work on it and when i do i feel like working on my other projects. taking inspiration from things outside of gd is an amazing trick and i found out about it through a similar pattern i began to see in fan-derivative works of everywhere at the end of time, where the ones that really caught on had inspiration taken from events that happened to them or other big experimental music artists and ones that were mishmashes of preexisting ideas got boring. i want to build gd levels because i like the music and thats why i am building this level ive felt stuck with for months, but i am proud of how its coming even though its hard to build

  • @Giraffleger

    I find that most of my inspiration comes from songs and then can connect them to an idea. I wouldn't start by (and would not enjoy) just opening the editor without any ideas. It's also very motivating to make a small piece of deco that looks really good because if you feel like the level is going nowhere you are reminded of that piece of deco and know that you are capable of making a good level.
    For inspiration I also play/ look in the editor of levels from nasgubb, subwoofer and jamattack and try to use some of their techniques in my own levels. For example using only the detail on brick objects and outlining structures with non- straight lines.
    I'm glad you mentioned it's important not to try too hard to be different because you can tell when a level is a Nasgubb level, or a Presta level, or a Wulzy level. That's just how the creative process works for different people. You might not be able to tell whether a level is a Giraffleger level just yet, but that's fine.
    I did make a full length level, which I worked on and off for about a year, but I couldn't get any feedback on it for a few months because I had no luck with level requests, and the first feedback said it wasn't rate worthy. Which is very important! Because that at least meant that I'd have to make another better level and stop getting too excited for it to get rated, which is what I'm working on now. If you're interested to see what it is, the name of the upcoming level is 'Surface Tension' and I have a few previews of it on my account (I am NOT trying to advertise it though). Which shows that criticism is very important if it's from the right sources, because the level might turn out well, featured even. Who knows

    I have been having trouble with motivation with me, trying to become an artist because I used to watch art UA-camrs and they were way way better than me and I always hear people say don’t worry you’ll get better or something along the lines of don’t think about that you’ll get to their level eventually but nobody ever said there will always be someone better than you at certain weird things or popular things or things that nobody even knows about besides you and a random guy but no matter what you do there will still be someone better at one certain thing and to not compare yourself to bigger people who have been doing this for way way longer at first I didn’t really understand that but I took your video and all I did was replace Geometry Dash editor and level making with art and drawing painting and stuff. thank you for opening my eyes.

    Here's some tips I have - Don't be afraid to make mistakes and create as much as possible. I may not have creator points, but I've been creating for a long time. I lost all of my motivation to continue last year, and I would always compare myself to those who made better gameplay than me, which made me less motivated which resulted in me not putting as much effort, then the cycle repeats. The only reason I came out of that was because of another youtube video I saw, and after that I had an idea to make and verify a challenge daily. This renewed my self confidence and I've never really have gotten demotivated again, although I stopped my daily challenge series (I can't verify the 25th one and I don't want to nerf it even more), I still continue to create and enjoy the process months later

    this is the best advice id ever had for the past few days of trying to create my first gd level, nothing really felt new to me as much as the last mistake
    so basically theres this game called undertale and another game called fnaf, im trying fo make an undertale fangame which has a few aspects of fnaf in the game just for fun, youre probably saying now “yeah its just another guy that wants to make something entirely new” well actually no its just that i felt like making a whole game in gd like i did in gamemaker
    one thing thats stopping me from making progress is me comparing myself to the original game and fnaf as well, i always think that im not actually making something too similar, and then felt like “dude everyones gonna hate the level whos gonna even play it” and ended up quitting, i saw this video, im back on track

    Logic???

    • @auskgd
      @auskgd  3 місяці тому +1

      I think the logic is quite clear. The video goes in order: first, if you want to improve, learn to take feedback from other creators; then, learn to balance feedback with what you want to do, because changing everything you do can be overwhelming; lastly, if you are overwhelmed, just relax a bit and make stuff for fun without worrying too much about improvement or getting feedback. The video gives you different approaches to creating depending on your own goals, and it's up to you individually to know what are yours

  • @homeboye8632
    @homeboye8632 3 місяці тому

    I agree with everything said, especially having fun in the editor. I find myself building just to finish my levels more often than I actually enjoy myself in the editor, its exhausting lol.
    That being said, im throwing your “Comparing yourself to others” advice out the window XD! I’ve always had big dreams when I first started creating, and I never really got any satisfaction building a level like all the other creators I see. I wanted to build big levels, I wanted to impress myself and others with my creations, and It didn’t happen by building the same generic level over and over.
    Of course, I tried on my own, and got a good start by building “Overdosed on Tynelol”. It was pretty good for what I wanted it to be, and for what I was capable of, it showed off my best at the time. It was around this time I met Typical, and we hit off pretty well. We started talking and we had a lot in common creating wise. We both loved effects, fast paced visuals, and eventually we got our first rated levels. After that, we started to get competitive (at least I think we got competitive lol), seeing who could make a better effect than the other, who can make the better visuals, who can be friends with these super cool creators. It just kept going and going and we tried to out build the other. I created a wavy effect that was mind blowing, Typical created one of the coolest epics at the time “Sky Oddysey”. Things like that and it kept going, there was just so much we had to prove.
    Then one day, typical just disappears. He stopped talking, he stopped making levels, we stopped the competition. Honestly, this really messed with me, because I never met anyone like Typical again. I never met anyone that had a creating style so similar to mine, who understood how to make their levels come alive, who understood the secrets to phenomenal visuals. I just felt like I was missing half of me. And since then, I haven’t really pushed myself to be as creative as I was. Sure I made a couple more levels that blew even my expectations for myself, but It just didn’t feel genuine. One was made in 5 days with some touch ups months later, another was a Frankenstein of whatever, another is “just a modern level”. I just don’t feel like I’m pushing myself anymore.
    So yes, comparing myself to someone pushed me to become the creator I am today. I would never have accomplished what I have if it wasn’t for comparing myself, and I am very grateful for having someone to compete against. To those wanting to achieve the dream of being a creating legend, I recommend comparing yourself to someone in your league. Maybe even a league above yours and getting on their level. Never settle for good enough, only your best

    • @auskgd
      @auskgd  3 місяці тому

      Comparing yourself and looking up to someone in a competitive manner are entirely different things, and the former is not sustainable. Comparison in the way I put in the video is the type of comparison that brings you down. A new creator looking at a fantastic level by an experienced one and thinking "I'll never do something like this" doesn't benefit them nor does it give them motivation to keep creating. Now, looking up to someone would make you think "I want to make something like this", and if you put the extra competitiveness spice, "I will do something better than this". Still, the latter can sometimes be unrealistic, so looking up to people is the best and most sustainable and healthy option to be motivated to create in my opinion. Comparing what you do to what others do generally doesn't bring anything positive in that regard from how I see it. Look up to others, only compare yourself to yourself.

    Id like to add on to the first one that feedback becomes less and less important the better you get. Eventually you can self rely and still get an outside opinion from your friends and such
    A lot of feedback givers, while meaning well, can be really negative and rude or biased and it makes it very hard to get useful feedback

    Being a creator without discord is honestly really hard

  • @ItsKyltii
    @ItsKyltii 3 місяці тому

    Joining the GD Creators Discord Server was the worst mistake of my life. I HATE the people in that server. I kept getting pestered to death about my horrible creations that I was previously happy about and I would have meltdowns in real life that I wish the people could see behind the incredibly "hostile" messages I was sending so that they would stop ruining my life. I tried telling them. And what happened? THEY DIDN'T CARE! This community is, other than the editor, the main reason I like this game so much. But at the same time, it the the main reason I hate it so much. And I keep being told the same crap over and over again, like, "Oh, but you shouldn't compare yourself to others!!" I'M TIRED OF HEARING IT! Is that all people can think of to say? I can't just NOT compare myself to others when everybody else FORCES me to! I also get told a lot that crating is about having fun. And I had fun. Until I joined the server and all my creations got hammered down as worthless garbage. Then it was impossible to have fun. When I tried to talk with the other people about it, they said stuff like "cope" or they didn't care at all and kept bullying me. You said in this video that if the person's feedback doesn't fit what you want to make, don't change your level. I agree that my opinion matters for my level more than those jerks'. But they all act like my own opinion doesn't matter.
    Whew, that was an essay. Now just to wait for people to reply and tell me that I'm wrong like they always do

    • @Lionguy7_
      @Lionguy7_ 3 місяці тому

      I agree. I don't give feedback often and I don't post my own work, but when I do give feedback I always try to point out what I like about someone's creation before giving my thoughts on how to improve it, if I have any. Sometimes I will just say it looks good to me. Just saying "this looks good" about someone's creation can be all your feedback needs to be, and the creator would most likely appreciate it.
      Also, to your complaint about people - Internet users are many different ages with different maturities. Saying stuff like "cope" is funny to some people, and annoying to others (like me). Months ago I said I was dropping Catacylsm after 50k attempts and I got laughed at. Grinding that level completely drained me out of any desire to play anything hard for months, and I've only just gotten that motivation back, after beating Faster.
      I know you said you're tired of hearing this, but you really shouldn't compare yourself to others. Here's why: With the internet, never before has it been so easy to see how you stack up compared to other people. Which means, never before has it been so easy for your brain to take a look at someone else, say "I will never be that good", and demotivate you, and make you feel like trash. As Ausk said in the video, there will always be someone better than you. While this is typically true, you should not take it as "I should never try my best". Always try your best. Do it for yourself, not for others. Social media in general makes it really easy for you to feel bad about yourself. Don't let it do that to you. I take a look at some of my art, then I look at Culuc's stuff, and I'm nowhere close. So what am I going to do, complain and whine about how I will never be as good? No. I'm going to look at how he does stuff, and try to emulate him. I'm going to find inspiration and learn new things.
      A final point, I've learned a lot about the Internet over the years I've been on it. It's a lot to sum up, but my best advice is: don't let it get to you, and don't take it too seriously, unless you know the people you're talking to well. Don't let it live your life for you, tell you what to like and what is fun.
      uh this is kinda long. lol. uh TL;DR: Internet sucks, be better than it. Also use blending glow!

      I think you should do your best to ignore hateful comments. If they were actually hostile, they bring nothing good to the table and there's no need to pay any attention to them. Be confident in what you make, even if it's something bad at first. We all have our own pacing when it comes to creating. I, for one, used to make comically bad design/layout levels, and looking back I'm glad I just kept going. Always remember to only take actual feedback. Anything that is hostile isn't feedback. Furthermore, responding to hatred with hatred never works, and only makes the problem last for longer. If you saw something genuinely concerning or that breaks the rules of said server, report it to a staff member. Regardless of that, take your own time with creating and try creating for yourself a bit more rather than waiting or expecting for people's approval or positive feedback. Not everyone likes the same stuff

      @@auskgd someone once told me if you look back at your past self and cringe, you've improved. But honestly, I think Space Adventure (my second level ever) was my creating peak, and nothing I have ever made has come close to it.

      That's kinda how it works for everything. If you're getting into any type of art, something that would take you many hours to make can take a professional artist just a few minutes. That shouldn't discourage you from being an artist, tho, if anything it should inspire you to improve at said art. We will never start something and be excellent at it from the beginning, and we have to be realistic about that.

    I also think people shouldnt really see creating as just creating, its art what you creators are working with. Art is subjective, do what you think is good, and as you mentioned about inspiration, its very important in any artform.
    You guys arent creators in just some video game, you're an artist!!
