One of my favorites. Stayed at a Lowenbrau Hotel in Koln and had this on tap, goes down a treat with Pork Knuckle and Sauerkraut! They don't stop giving it to you either, comes in 200ml glasses every 5 or so minutes and they chalk up what you've had on a coaster. Just pay when you're done, brilliant system as you needn't call a waiter or head to the bar.
That is extremely weird because they gave you Bavarian Helles in 200 ml Kölsch glasses. Why is there even a Löwenbräu hotel in Köln? I am very confused. Let me tell you an old German beer joke if you don't know what I'm talking about: A Bavarian and a guy from Cologne go to a bar, the guy from Cologne orders a Kölsch (the typical Cologne beer which is served in 200 ml glasses). The Bavarian guy then orders a glass of water. The guy from Cologne is confused and asks him "what are you doing?" "Well" the Bavarian guy says "if you're not drinking beer, I'm not going to either!"
@@maximilianmustermann5763 It's a nice cheap hotel, just on the river. That's a good joke btw! I have also been to Munich and had the proper beer from source!
And it s not free yeah for hotel guests ? I m drinking it now in Batumi Georgia it s good. And I have to say this I have allergy against alchogolig drinks after 25 years old but this one did not hurt me.. But for me the best beer is Kuller because ofy allergic. If all of alcogolicgs make allergy for me I need to taste cannabis . I do not have any choise. Need to catch the vibe. For future I will come to Canada
Many thanks for getting me into German lager. I've avoided lager for decades after drinking some of the Carlsberg and Heineken crap we get over here and assuming all lager was piss. This German stuff is proper beer! Zum Wohl!
I know I keep banging on about it but the state of lager in this country is shocking at the moment. The macro brewed stuff is just plain old crap for the most part. I think if more people tasted decent lager they'd bin off the Fosters, Stella, Becks and Budweiser for good.
The Bavarian Lagers are a little different. They're not even called Lager but "Helles" (= Pale) and they are well known for being smooth and a little malty with less bitterness.
I remember Lowenbrau from the very late 60s and early 70s , was one of the first beers I ever drunk regulary. I rember it as a great lager, this was of course brewed in Germany. I haven't seen in a pub for yonks, I have heard it was brewed in the UK which is a big no, no, total sub standard shite. If i come across some realbGerman stuff I will give it a go. Thanks for the histiry lesson very welcome and very interesting.
Thus was the FIRST German beer I tried as a (much) younger man in the late 1950's. I gave up on it when Miler took over the production in the USA. Not a favorite anymore. I was able to sample some Fassbier in 2014 in Garsching, DE. It was at a Gasthaus and was the Oktoberfest Bier. Tasty, but nor the Helles.
Exactly right about this beer. Many years ago here in the US it was brewed in Germany. Then sometime in the late 70s It was brewed by Miller, it was complete rubbish. Then for a short time the German brewed beer was available here. This has stopped and I don't believe it is now imported.
It's a great shame that we can't find this in Australia anymore. In Adelaide we have the annual Shuzenfest. QANTAS used to fly in Jumbo jet full it in kegs straight from Munich. I've still got pictures me of totally Shitzenfaced on the stuff. Lol.
Hey, consider keeping an empty bottle of this because they've changed the stickers on it. I like the change they've made. I like the new retro look it has, but it's just not the 'Original' anymore... (haha, get it... because it's a 'Münchner Hell' now).
Yeah I nearly got caught out on that one too. Luckily I checked where it was made. Soon as I saw it was the UK, back it went on the shelf. That stuff is disgusting
I used to be able to get it in st louis Missouri about 18 years ago great beer then it just vanished does anyone know if any of the states still sell it? Thanks for the review
Definitely on par with Augustiner. I just had a Löwenbräu and was very pleasantly surprised. Definitely one of the best Bavarian Helles in my opinion. I'm in Germany but I'm not sure when I last had a Löwenbräu. There are many good Helle in Bavaria, it's easy to lose track.
Fascinating history of what I considered a joke beer all through high school- because I remember it BEING a joke beer in the USA. But now this guy tells me some history of REAL Lowenbrau, and I'm reminded of the story I heard about how it changed when it was bought by Miller in 1975 "A truly great American beer!" yeah right: ua-cam.com/video/iDBtzXvqcSU/v-deo.html It took American business genius to take a historic beer like that and turn it into a joke. Amazing what a stone age beer culture America was until the microbrews came out, when 1990? Before then, you couldn't buy much that was more boring than an American beer. Very entertaining, thank you! Also way to rep the Sox
It's brewed under license in many countries (now that it's owned by ABInBev) and it varies in quality from country to country. In the UK it's awful stuff.
@@bandsbikesandboozereviews revisiting this video. I can confirm the Canadian Lowenbrau taste awful. Nothing better than the real Lowenbrau in Germany. I wonder why Lowenbrau agrees to license their name to be ruined around the world.
I like when you talk about history! Keep on the good work 👍
Thanks, will do!

Sounds like a wicked cool hotel

I guess it's akin to being at a Lagavulin hotel in London and drinking Scotch with Tonic.

Went out my way to buy this one from beers of Europe - absolutely beautiful, big feeling in the back of the pallet
Oh hello Mr, fancy meeting you here
Me and the missus pronounce it "Laughing brew" because it always gave us the giggles.

Very interesting stuff mate ,great review 👍
Needed back in the U.S.A like back to the New York market again!!!

The best of the best, I wish I could get my hands on it!
It's certainly a great beer. Not as good as the Augustiner but not far off. 👍

OKish lager with nice molty body, crisp and refreshing. I had green bottle and experienced some wet cardboard and slight metallic aroma. Cheers!
Thanks for sharing

I can't find it anywhere, been wanting to try this for decades

I got some out of Aldi’s thinking it was the good stuff, 12 pack of cans. Got home and found out it was some 3.5% bullshit.....Absolutely gutted!!!
Yeah I nearly got caught out on that one too. Luckily I checked where it was made. Soon as I saw it was the UK, back it went on the shelf. That stuff is disgusting
Right on, I give it a go but there’s no comparison with the stuff you reviewed👍🏻
Never been able to find this but can find any other German brew in Arizona
I used to be able to get it in st louis Missouri about 18 years ago great beer then it just vanished does anyone know if any of the states still sell it? Thanks for the review
The German brewed is the real deal mate, proper chugga, great review mate cheers
Thanks mate, it certainly is a chugga ... I could neck quite a few of them and they wouldn't even touch the sides LOL!
Is this on par with Augistiner Helles?
It's not far off but you have to be careful where you buy it. If it's brewed in the UK it'll be dogshit. If it's German brewed it'll be the real deal.
@@bandsbikesandboozereviews i will get it from Beers Of Europe so it should be legit along with a few others when my birthday comes up

Are lowenbrau kegs on PD german brewed ?
I think they might be brewed in Germany simply going on the basis that the Spaten on PD is brewed in Germany.
back in the early 90s I tried Lowenbrau, which the US had changed the formula. It was awful. Today I have to cross the US/Canada border to get it.
