Don't expect nothing with Nightwish. Tuomas is versatile. And now with three singers he can write everything and surprises us. Troy's voice is really good. This kind of music is close to Tuomas' side project. It's Tuomas' music and lyrics
Also Nightwish has other more purely folk songs like this, like the Islander and Edema Ruh (those Edema Ruh is a bit heavier, more Folk Rock/Metal than Harvast is).
I love Nightwish, no matter what. Of course, Tuomas is like wine, Nightwish is a bottle and together they make vintage. And this album is going to be an awesome vintage. Maybe he has found some kind of peace of mind from his heavier mind from the earlier albums. Come on, it's Tuomas, he's one of the best composer and songwriters and has a beautiful mind and I appreciate he CAN put his mindset into the music this beautifully.
It took me a long time to figure our this song lyrically, but I now think that it's about the inevitable death of us all & how we should accept it, but live our lives to the fullest taking care of one another, especially children. Here you can find the lyrics genius.com/Nightwish-harvest-lyrics For me, verse 1 is death personified telling that we will die, but between birth and death we have time to live, i.e. sing our unsung song while approaching death. Verse 2 tells that nature teaches us that every living thing must die, and death is always present (The strange peace of storm Hovers over crops), although as children, we don't realise it or worry about it. Verse 3 (or the chorus) tells that humans are no exception but all living species (i.e. fields) face the same destiny in death (All going back to one single grain). However, we should live our lives to the fullest taking care of our children & life in general (Water the field) before we die. i.e. "surrender to the earth". For me verse 4 is difficult to interperet, but I think that it tells us that although we could enjoy life to the fullest, we tend not to do so. And the more we let that happen, the less there is to enjoy. There are also those that try to control how we live our lives, but we can choose to resist and enjoy our lives to the fullest ("a carousal of dare") Finally "Arrive alive" means that one should live his/her life to the fullest before it's time to die.
As a biologist I see a few other references here: quarternary code refers to the base pairs of DNA and beautiful roses are a product of deliberate breeding (or possibly genetic engineering.) All going back to one single grain is a reference to the last universal common ancestor (LUCA) or possibly "mitochondrial Eve" (the mother of us all in EFMB). Tuomas writes on many levels.
@@machintelligence Agreed. There are more than one way to interpret the lyrics like with all great poetry. I did google quaternary (yes, it's spelled wrong in the lyrics - see en.wiktionary.org/wiki/quarternary), but didn't want to make my interpretation any more difficult, as quaternary code is like you said something shared with all life with DNA. I'm also aware of LUCA, but since "a grain" js typically something harvested for human or animal consumption, I decided to interpret it as death's harvest all life ends up being.
@@tarmotyyri6733 OK. I interpreted it to be a seed grain. As with so many of Tuomas' lyrics, multiple possibilities are part of the fun. There is something for everyone.
Great reaction and comments. I think it's hilarious what other folks are saying. One common complaint with Noise was that it sounded too much like other Nightwish songs. Now they're complaining that this doesn't sound like Nightwish. I think part of the problem is the fixation that a lot of listeners have with the idea of genre in music and especially metal. They think that since Nightwish is in the symphonic metal genre, that their songs have to sound like other music in that genre. It's really simple once you realize that Nightwish music is in the Nightwish genre, and doesn't have to and is not going to sound like anyone else. That is a wonderful thing to be able to pull off. Other folks have been complaining that they don't like it because Floor isn't singing. I've said in another comment that this is Nightwish, not Floor and the Floorettes (that name came from another reactor quite a while ago, can't remember who). I've listened to and loved Floor for over 20 years, but Nightwish is a band made up of six people all trying to make the best music they can, and all of them deserve their time in the sun, which Tuomas is glad to give them. One thing I really love about Nightwish is that the band members never step on anyone else's part, but respect each other, and will accept any role that's required, and that's wonderful to see. Also, weren't those harmonies just beautiful in Harvest?
I agree with everything you said some people are to quick to judge. Nightwish doesn't have to sound like other symphonic metal bands, Nightwish has their own sound and it's not always about Floor this whole band is like single unit every member has the right to do there part and I'm glad Tuomas is doing that.
This very jethrotullian Celtic Hymn is great and it's not surprise to me at all. Troy's voice fits perfect to this kind of material and the harmonies with Floor and Marco are beautiful. Nightwish's versatility is out outstanding. Wise words from You! Heal yourself with good music!
The first part is OK, I keep thinking it will grow on me, but so far not yet. I think I like it as much as I'm ever going to. But from the beginning of the instrumental section on, I love it.

Hi Olly! So thankful that you shared your reaction with us while in fact you should be resting. But curiosity won lol! I liked this song from the first drumbeat. And the lyrics are again food for thought. Enjoy and wish you all the best. Greetings from the Netherlands!
Tuomas's poetry inspires images, feelings, and ideas more than any other songwriter I've heard. I see the different communities of humans on earth as the various "100 fields" that go back to "one single grain", and we are meant to "water the fields" (contribute good to those around us) during our lifetimes, and ultimately surrender to the Earth. Life is impermanent but beautiful (The "quaternary code" of DNA, gave us the beautiful rose that ultimately withers).
I really like this song. First time when hearing it, I was like "What". Second time it sounded better, third time I liked it and after that I loved it. And when came this video with lyrics, I started understand more of it, and then again, fell in love to it once more. it is maybe not my TOP 10 NW songs, but really like it. All small and big changes, musicianship, everything what Tuomas has written inside it. There is lot of details. One such a nice detail is when music goes down and all three vocalist sing - it just sound so nice. After hearing now two songs from new album, totally different, cannot wait when can hear rest 7. What Tuomas is "serving" to us. It´s album´s "HUMAN" side. Connected to be a human, or our human life. "NATURE" goes then, like name, says to nature.
My take on the lyrics is that *we* are the corn and we will be harvested (as we all will). So "join in the harvest of hundred fields" actually means that we should familiarize ourselves with the inevitable and embrace the cycle of life, which includes our death (but we can water the earth and inspire a child).
First hope your healing goes well, it will go faster hearing Nightwish, this is a perfect song for your rehabilitation. Nice reaction Olly, i'm really enjoying Harvest, definitely a grower -- wishing you the very best with your recovery, take care and thanks again for your efforts.
This is a beautiful song🤘. This song is underrated in my opinion I'm glad Tuomas went with a more folk style with this single let the hater's hate they don't understand beautiful music, it's not like Nightwish hasn't done Folk style music before. I love this song and great reaction Olly
It's not a matter of "hate". To put it simply, this song is weak. Plain and simple. Wolfstone and other bands had been there a quarter of a century ago, and with better results...

Olly first of all you need to take your time healing we will be here to enjoy your reactions when your well now on to nightwish your right it's HUMAN TO NATURE noise was human harvest is nature nightwish is about to release to the world a epic album so please all you nightwish fans need to hold your breath because all of us can honestly say that no 2 nightwish albums are the same they grow with the times they're one of the most artistic bands ever I'm 60 I've seen and heard many many bands so I say open your hearts and minds nightwish rocks
Hey man! I'm glad you're doing okay following your surgery and I hope that your recovery continues with no issues. It's good to have you back on the scene. Before I heard this song, when I found out the name of it was Harvest, I was totally expecting dark and heavy with imagery of people being harvested by some dread machine in the wake of Noise. To say that this song isn't even close to what I was expecting is the understatement of the century. After the initial shock of that difference wore off, I really do love the song and can't wait to hear more of the new album. I'm also really looking forward to experiencing some of my favorite reactors hearing more of the new album, yourself included. Until then, be well sir!
I would like to see you react to Deadhead by Devin Townsend live at Royal Albert Hall and his Spirits will Collide official video. Unbelievable voice, range, and fry scream. He is also know for his wall of sound production.
Well Olly you are safe from headbanging with this tune - Tuomas has written something that means something different to everybody. Get well brother and enjoy the tune!
"Art" can be defined as "something that causes a strong, varied emotional reaction in people". It is not necessarily art if everyone likes it. Tuomas makes great pieces of art.
I don't think so.. she's back vocal here and not in center of attention. She will dance but she's not going to dance all over the stage in front of Troy, this is his time to shine :)
The lines "Water the fields, Surrender to the Earth" may imply water the fields to provide for human life (to grow food). And because they show the celtic cross tombstones, might this refer to the act of surrendering to the Earth. In other words we live off the foods that are harvested from the ground and the in the end at death we surrender back to the Earth, which in a way also waters the Earth with our bodies. Again the circle of life. Maybe? I am so glad to hear you are getting your health back together. Hope the healing comes fast and complete. Be well soon my friend. Peace.
To me, "water the fields" means nurturing children's minds about more than what they can see on a screen. Get them to ask questions and investigate their world.
Still alive. 👍 At first I felt this was too soft for me. Don’t know really why I prefer my Nightwish heavy since I enjoy Auri for example very much, and folk too. But now after over 10 listens I love it. And I very much like that Troy gets to sing a lead too. I think this song is about death. 😀
Olly The Rock oh and I forgot to say: You really need a headrest to remind you. That ”I can’t headbang at all” was forgotten way tooo soon. Luckily the song wasn’t harder. 😀
You nailed it. This is Nightwish. People who say that this isn’t Nightwish are denying the way Nightwish has developed over the years, I completely agree with you. They reject reality and substitute their own. That problem was also criticised in Noise btw, lol. Yes, I already mentioned that in several comment sections, that song is not about technology as such. It is about how we use it. Or how we let us be used by it. We have become tool of a tool. And this song is about the joy of life and the inevitability of death. Do you have a link to that interview with Tuomas? It sounds interesting, would like to see it. Btw I love this song, couldn’t agree with you more!
I'm glad you liked this one, but at the same time sad you don't do Nightwish anymore. Personally I love this song, and I really hope you will get better soon.
I stopped due to lack of interest to there older music which is sad. My last reaction of there older song got 22 views. Sad but I still keep it metal. You are awesome, thank you.
Oh my friend what happened to you? :( I didn't know you had been through a surgery, I hope you feel much better soon ❤ As for the song, in between a few negative reactions I've read about it saying this is not Nightwish, I particularly loved it, it made me think of Africa, then Ireland, England, in ancient times, a village, people there, like a little fairy tale in my mind, I'm an aspiring writer going through a writer's block for weeks now and their music did again, activated my imagination, it is very different from what we are used to hear from NW but in my opinion, it is a beautiful change
I like this song. I also liked Noise. If these two songs are any indication, there should be a good variety of styles on the new album...I can't wait! I see you doing a bit of head nodding (not quite head banging) and then grabbed your neck afterwards. Please take it easy...we don't want you causing your neck to take even longer to heal, or worse yet, causing a new injury. Cheers!
You are right, but Thomas had to take some pressure off of Floors voice. Troy's is going to have songs to sing, and Marco. Floors voice wouldn't last long doing the kinda concert they do. drummer and guitar players can go buy another one. Can't go buy a voice. I am glad Thomas recognize that.
perfect break song for her during concerts. She can dance and have fun with backing vocal duties! I look forward to the live version and how they simplify it to suit the live performance.
I don’t know where you got that from. Floor has already done three world tours with Nightwish and I never heard anyone say that it was a problem for her. Stick to the facts please. Fact is that Floor sings harmony with Marco and Troy in this song as well, so there is no taking pressure off here. She is singing as always, just not the lead in this song. Btw I like that Troy has a lead vocal as well. He has a nice voice. And deserves more exposure. Another fact is that Tuomas has said that he wanted to do more with all three voices. This song shows that he indeed did that.
If you sing like Floor, with no pressure on her throat and with all her technique and breath support, you can't loose your voice. It is a muscle, and if you train and maintain it like all good vocalists do it is not possible that at a certain point the voice is gone. Ofcourse you have to treat the whole body well, take a good rest after a show. Sleep is neccesary to recover, but isn't it with other things (other muscles, like maybe sportathletes) as well to recover?
My main interpretation of this song is the nurture and care for our children. The wheat is our children. The celtic crosses in the wheat fields represents us as parents. Inspire a child. Water the fields. Return to the earth. I might be way off, but that's my two cents for what they're worth.
Harvest is the song that annoyed me the most when I first heard the album, I was like WTF is this Tuomas?! 🤣🤣 Now I love it as much as all other songs on the album and it is not possible to not sing along when Harvest plays, chorus is just so infectious 😄 I really hope they play entire album on the tour, cause I cannot imagine not hearing live any of the songs

Speaking about "different" Nightwish songs, here are two for you that you can listen to while recuperating from that terrifying vampire bite you've got on your throat: The Eyes of Sharbat Gula, only music, no video, just the picture from National Geographic Magazine in 1985 (google it): ua-cam.com/video/hvbSWXi6hgA/v-deo.html Arabesque, the official clip. Not the band, but some firedancers from a concert on the Imaginareum tour: ua-cam.com/video/afIoCpJcVPo/v-deo.html
Sonata Arctica fans whine that Tony and the Wolfpack don't do the same music they did with Ecliptica, they can't because they're 20 yrs older and have different priorities and concerns than 20 yr old guys just starting out. They're parents, husband's, partners who have those concerns and life experience that is shaping their music. People not accepting change & that people get older and change and evolve, is scary. Nightwish fans need to come to the realization as well that people get older, change and evolve.
I have to say I'm not convinced by this song, specially the first half. I'm sure it'll sound better live and it might grow on me, but there's something missing. Anyway, it's good to see you are slowly getting better.
Nothing is missing. It is just your expectation was probably "more of the same, please". They chose not to do the same. I congratulate them on being true to themselves.
@@ChrisPage68 I do love the fact that they don't stick to just one type of song or genre, and that they have evolved through the years. Otherwise, it would be very boring. However, that does not mean that I have to like every song and this one just doesn't make it for me.
I loved it on first hearing. I can't stand it when a band stands still creatively, only churning out what fans expect or want - I want to hear what the band is feeling and thinking. That's what I'm getting here. It's why I turned away from bands like Metallica. They have been in a holding pattern for years, not doing anything interesting with the talent they have. That can't be said of Nightwish. I'm also glad they've torn up the old business model by releasing singles in consecutive months. I cannot wait to have this album in my hot hands. 🤘

Thank you Nightwish continues to surprise us all.
Hola Nightwish saco un nuevo tema "Ad Astra ", lo escuche y tuve un montón de emociones. Los amo.
Lo que hace nightwish , es versatilidad , por eso amo este grupo.
I would like to see you react to Deadhead by Devin Townsend live at Royal Albert Hall and his Spirits will Collide official video. Unbelievable voice, range, and fry scream. He is also know for his wall of sound production.
Send me a link...oh boy sound good
Well Olly you are safe from headbanging with this tune - Tuomas has written something that means something different to everybody. Get well brother and enjoy the tune!
thank you hopeful with the healing process...
best description of this song so far :)
"Art" can be defined as "something that causes a strong, varied emotional reaction in people". It is not necessarily art if everyone likes it. Tuomas makes great pieces of art.
safe from headbanging, rock, pop or otherwise..he needs Tarja to inspire him back into METAL
@@metalhead4624 also Anette does much heavyer music than Nightwish these days
I was waiting for your reaction and here it is. Great as usual 😊
Am I the only one imagining this song performed live with Floor dancing all over the stage?
She is going to dance up a tornado! 😋
Nope, I’ve been thinking the same thing since I first heard it, can’t wait to see it in December 😂
I agree with some other comments, it's the best description of the song
Expect the unexpected with Nightwish :)
Still alive. 👍
At first I felt this was too soft for me. Don’t know really why I prefer my Nightwish heavy since I enjoy Auri for example very much, and folk too.
But now after over 10 listens I love it. And I very much like that Troy gets to sing a lead too.
I think this song is about death. 😀
yes still alive......love it. Thank you for your comments. I really love that they brought Troy's voice to light.
Olly The Rock oh and I forgot to say: You really need a headrest to remind you. That ”I can’t headbang at all” was forgotten way tooo soon. Luckily the song wasn’t harder. 😀
I think it's about not forgetting to live before dying.
PageMonster well yes, nice addition.
Troy also sing on some of the Auri songs, like Desert Flower (a song he also wrote)
Yes let me find it...
here is the link: ua-cam.com/video/lgL8K8i1h5g/v-deo.html
great interview.
Get well soon, dude!
:( I didn't know you had been through a surgery, I hope you feel much better soon ❤
As for the song, in between a few negative reactions I've read about it saying this is not Nightwish, I particularly loved it, it made me think of Africa, then Ireland, England, in ancient times, a village, people there, like a little fairy tale in my mind, I'm an aspiring writer going through a writer's block for weeks now and their music did again, activated my imagination, it is very different from what we are used to hear from NW but in my opinion, it is a beautiful change
I love it great sound and yes it's still nightwish.😍🥰
I like this song. I also liked Noise. If these two songs are any indication, there should be a good variety of styles on the new album...I can't wait! I see you doing a bit of head nodding (not quite head banging) and then grabbed your neck afterwards. Please take it easy...we don't want you causing your neck to take even longer to heal, or worse yet, causing a new injury. Cheers!
Thank you it's hard not too.
@@ollytherock7324 It is not easy. :-D I was a bit baffled that they did not insist on you wearing the cervical collar.
@@Immortall1408 glad they did not.😀😋
You are right, but Thomas had to take some pressure off of Floors voice.
@@treintje1001 r u saying singer don't lose their voice. I think it is just common sense.
Man it must be absolute torture for you to watch that instrumental without being able to headbang!
Yes yes and yes....did I say yes...
@@ollytherock7324 You have my most heartfelt sympathy man, lol!
Well said. Once a fan always a fan, even when we think its not the same. We love our nightwish.
@@ollytherock7324 Absolutely, Nightwish is very special bend on the music scene and Tuomas is genius! As you said, he/they are constantly evolving and it never went to bad direction but to more awesome one. It is impossible to stay the same your entire life and music has to change with you. And this new Nightwish is just awesome as always!
the genius of Tuomas Holopainen........AGAIN!!!!
When your heads only held on by 2 stitches but you still can't keep it still against the rhythm of a Nightwish song :D
what was the surgery from? asking as a peer...I'm 46, have had major back surgery that layed me out for almost a full year in '92
C5 and C6 fusion in the neck.
@@ollytherock7324 ah, yeah mine is lower back....all of my lower lumbar fused...think 5 vertebrae...I have a nasty case of scoliosis you see...effected me in the early 90s...but we make it though dont we?
@@testpattern23 That is the only to way to go. We need to make it. I thank the fact that music helps me heal, but we both know that the pain reminds of that its there. Stay metal my friend.
Hi from the UK thought you might like this it made i laugh
The Heimatdamisch sweet child o mine (guns and Rose's cover) hope it makes you smile
I really have to get used to this. There are things I like and things that are just too soft for me in the delivery. Will need a few more listens for me.
🙂 You couldn't quite keep your head still during the reaction. Well Nightwish will help with your aches hopefully👍
I tried but it is Nightwish hard not too....lol
Speaking about "different" Nightwish songs, here are two for you that you can listen to while recuperating from that terrifying vampire bite you've got on your throat:
The Eyes of Sharbat Gula, only music, no video, just the picture from National Geographic Magazine in 1985 (google it): ua-cam.com/video/hvbSWXi6hgA/v-deo.html
Arabesque, the official clip. Not the band, but some firedancers from a concert on the Imaginareum tour: ua-cam.com/video/afIoCpJcVPo/v-deo.html
thank you so much for the links
Beware of the music! :)))
Don't forget to hold your neck still steady! 💙
Indeed. Some of us already have. 😉
Wise words my friend and if Nightwish didn't change or evolve their music it would get stale and nobody wants the best band in the world go stale.
❤
Great video, the song is a bit odd but good.
3/5⭐
Every time I hear the introduction to Harvest, I can't help thinking of the introduction to this song: ua-cam.com/video/_Y2qfmjCmCw/v-deo.html
maybe some Jethro Tull sound here, it is a great song, well written.
Wow that song did nothing for me, disappointed.
man, well i hope the others will be to your liking. Thank you for taking the time to comment
so what? your trolling is insignificant to me
This song is awful
It is nothing of the sort.
I think you might be listening to a different song?
the pop world will love it ..after 5 years of deliberating and planning...wow
Its sad that you feel that way, but I get it each one has there own view and that's ok. Hopefully you have enjoyed Nightwish, they are an amazing band and great people.
@@metalhead4624 I'm sorry you're so closed-off. Do you expect them to do exactly what you want? What gives you the right to dictate their direction?
