I must say there is nothing like the PR parade 🇵🇷 in NYC, it’s on another level, however this festival is great also. 👍🏾 and to those that don’t know the history of Plena, its origins came from the African slaves as they took the time for themselves from the evil and wicked Spanish 🇪🇸 colonizers who abused them for centuries. I wish that they would keep it original instead of white washing it throughout the Island as you can witness it for yourselves.
This not a 78 municipality parade. It’s a celebration of San Sebastián, which takes place in the Old San Juan. The Puerto Rican Day Parade consists of most of the municipality. A big difference.🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷
You are talking about Bomba. Bomba was the one that was brought to the island by the slaves and was only played by them as a way of communication between them without the Spaniards knowledge. It is considered one of the oldest rhythms in the whole Caribbean and the traditional style (instruments and dances) are still the same to this day. Plena came much later, at the beginning of the 1900s and was born in the island, its suppose to be the mix of Bomba beat (but with panderos instead of drums) with indigenous instruments (güiro and maraca) and European instruments (trombones, acordeón, etc). Its a Puerto Rican criollo music and have been always used throughout the whole island. It was basically the newspaper of the poor people, that’s how plena songs such as “mataron a Helena”, and “temporal, temporal” were born. Also this is a Festival. Not the same thing as the NY parade.
@ that is false, the Indigenous tribes were pretty much wiped out, and it was not Caucasian Spanish culture, it originated from the African slaves, read and research the history, Bomba and Plena’s origins are African.
@@masterdeeable1 I respectfully disagree. While the PR Parade in NYC is pretty awesome (I’ve covered it plenty of times)… it’s no match for Sanse. This is simply on another level.. and more of a community feel… there’s always some damn drama at the NY parade lol 🤷♂️

@ let’s get it right and exact, it’s a colonial parade, after all San Sebastián was a Roman Catholic so called saint. Ok, yet both are parades.
