  • Haudenosaunee also called Iroquois Confederacy is made up of the Cayuga, Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Seneca and Tuscarora Native American Indians. They were some of the first tribes to encounter non-Indians. Today they successfully try to keep their traditional dances and languages intact. Here are some examples of their efforts. Haudenosaunee cultural leaders taught the American Indian Dance Theatre the dances of the Iroquois Confederacy. This video shows how the Haudenosaunee enter their long houses. The group then does the Stomp Dance wearing traditional Iroquois regalia.

That first song had similarities in sound and dance to Muscogee stomp dances. Love this whole video!

There is Onandaga in my ancestry. I don't say I am Native American because I don't know the language or culture. But I love the dances and songs, naked or clothed. They help me feel connected to a grandmother who lived a long time ago. Thank you.

Because you are many years removed from your ancestry, you shouldn't discount your connection. I have Cherokee in my blood and when I saw a magazine that featured Hopi religion , I knew that I connected with that more than the religion I grew up with.

Yes, these dances are Iroquois and yes, this is how you would typically see them dressed nowadays.
I believe this clip comes from the Native American Dance Theater. They do a pretty good representation of what our songs and dances look like.

Origin of the smoke dance, it was actually the original WAR DANCE, the old ones changed the beat and the young men had fun with it and danced to the quicker tempo...common mistake made by many.
