- This is my Lamy 2000 EF under review. Quick run down plus a comparison with other extra fine & fine nibs: Pelikan M805 EF, Diplomat Aero EF, Faber Castell Ondoro Fine. Hope this helps when it comes to picking out the right nib size for you!
I’ve had this pen for decades and still love it
Very good review Doodlebud. Appreciate the comparison. I have a 2000 in medium, it writes closer to a western broad as my preference is medium-broad which is also advantageous for reverse writing because you get a free fine or extra fine. It’s incredibly smooth, probably the best writing nib I own. Just like you mentioned, it just writes, and every time. Perfect wetness. The Lamy 2000 is the German sports car of fountain pens, but of course one that you could use for decades. The cap mechanism is probably the single best engineered snap cap of all time, it’s going to take a long time to wear out. Also factoring in the stainless steel, gold nib, and high strength makrolon, the price is a killer deal. It’s no wonder that the pen has been in production since the 1960s. I’ve bought a lot, but my 5 favorites I will likely keep for life are the Kaweco Sport (because it’s always in my pocket), Lamy 2000, Twsbi Eco, Platinum 3776 and a Vanishing Point. Honorable mentions go to the Vac 700R, Franklin Christoph Model 02, and Lamy Safari.

Thanks so much for reaching out Jenny, love your style! I agree with the "love affair" writing with a fountain pen brings. Instead of just jotting down some notes with a pen, with fountain pens there is pride. Selecting the suitable pen, nib, ink, paper, & script is part of the process. Then there is the focus on spelling, grammar, structure, style, spacing, & meaning all come together. I love technology, efficiency, precision & progress (that used to be my career), but for me the fountain pen remains. It is in its perfect fit, form, & function. Even though it may not be perfect or efficient, and has flaws (much like ourselves). The number of times someone talks about a fountain pen they owned decades ago is amazing. That same phenomenon doesn't seem to occur with a ball point. Hope you enjoy your new pens! 🤗

Even the greatest FPens Chanels fail miserably to provide an upclose shot of the line width, and fail even more because they never compare the “same nib size” from different manifacturers.
All in all, I watch a lovely video, that makes me even more confused. Haha

I recently picked up a 2000 with an oblique medium nib just to get some variation on my Steel 2000 with a medium nib. Ears on the Macralon useful finding the right position to hold an oblique nibbled pen. I like a cap that posts deeply as a proper fountain pen should.
Just added this pen to my rotation this month ... only my second time using it since purchasing in the beginning of the year. I'm amazed (actually forgot) at how "broad" it is, even compared to my other "Western" EF's!
Don't know if it's true, but just an observation on my end. Lamy nibs are good, but they seem a bit wider than other "western" nibs
My Lamy 2000 Broad Oblique is brilliant. Love the nib, the weight of the pen and the build quality. You can’t go wrong
Been thinking about getting an OB or OM nib for the pen too. Has so many nib options which is great
The oblique broad isn’t too broad in my opinion. I have the stainless steel model because of its awesome weight. However the carbon model offers the extra oblique nib which in honesty would’ve been my 1st choice
While there are certainly lots of Lamy 2000 reviews, I really appreciate the ink line comparison with other EFs (and one F). I write small so almost all of my pens are EF or F at most (with an occasional stub for fun!). I'm jealous of the EF on your Pelikan. My 600 is a medium - a bit broad for me so I almost always write "reverse" with it to get that EF line. Happily, it's smooth either way.
Glad to hear it was helpful for you. I'm a XF/F person myself. I find if I have a nib that is too broad, making it a cursive italic or suits my writing style more.
Really intereating video. I just buyed the lamy 2000 f. I think if I had seen your video before y have buyed the EF. Your videos are very different and show things the rest don t do. Congrats. Saludos desde españa.

EF, it is. Lamy nibs run broad, Diplomat F and EF nibs are truly fine nibs, like Goulet nibs. Maybe that's a JoWo thing?

Excellent review, if I was in the market for an EF the M805 would be my choice because of design and overall appearance and almost exact line width as the L2000. Ink colour might make the L2000 appear slightly wider? Not a fan of EF nibs for everyday writing. Give me a M800 or 805 in a fine nib or a Sailor medium gold nib any day. JMHO.
An EF definitely isn't as nice to write with as a fine. Most of the time I use my pens for work where I'm filling out forms & need the smaller nib & less flow
Thanks for video. Is there a significant difference between the Lamy 2000 EF tip and the Fine tip? Normally I also use a lamy safari Fine tip. Should I buy the EF tip for the Lamy 2000?
I can't say for sure as I have never used a Lamy 2000 fine to compare. I would think that their steel & gold nibs should be similar. But maybe look around online to see if you can find that comparison. Nib size is such a stressful decision with a new pen LOL 🤣!
If you like to take neat notes I would say yes.

Lady 2000, pilot capless, diplomat aero are the ones I an thinking about. This video was great but didn’t help me make a decision :(

This is a great review and I ended up getting this pen as a gift. One thing I was looking forward to was the satisfying click when you put the lid back on the pen. Though mine has a grinding sensation until the cap clips in place, is this normal?
It should be pretty smooth going in. There are some metal strips on the inside of the cap that guise the pen into the cap & give some tactile feedback, but should not be a grinding or scratching. Is it leaving marks on your pen?
@@Doodlebud thanks for responding. It's definitely a rough scratchy sensation. There's no physical marks on the pen. Though if I rotate the cap while it's on it keeps scratching and leaves a ring mark around the silver grip area. But this rubs off fairly easily. I might just have to return for a new pen
@@stephenchu928 Yeah I might return it. I wouldn't recommend rotating the cap when it is in the pen, even with one that doesn't grind. But it should be smooth when you slide the pen into the cap

Please do an engineer’s review of the Jinhao 80 fountain pen , which pen seems to have the attributes of the Lamy 2000 and the exposed nib of a Lamy Studeo but at a low price sub $10 !

I don't have a Lamy2k, however I have about 25 pens, most expensive of which is my Vanishing Point. The Jinhao 80, that I got a week and a half ago, has been used exclusively since. It is an absolute pleasure to use. The nib is ridiculously smooth and the EF lays down a perfectly smooth and just-wet-enough line. All of my pens, minus my Kaweco Sport EF, that I use oxford blue carts in, need to be used on more expensive paper only, I use Rhodia pads exclusively for my 'high end' paper selection. However, I am a legal pad addict, for some reason lol. I have always enjoyed them and before fountain pens I exclusively wrote on yellow legal pads with Pilot precise v7s. I have only been able to use my Kaweco Sport on legal pads, as it's the only pen that doesn't create feathering on them. The Jinhao 80 not only doesn't feather on the legal pads, it makes the paper feel as smooth as premium sheets.
I have been using it so much that I fill up and have to refill ink again about an hour or two into the next day lol. Like, I can't stop myself writing haha. It's kinda what happened to me when I got my Vanishing Point, except with that thing I went thru about 10$ of Rhodia Paper every 5 days for s few weeks
I am tossing up between the Lamy 2000 and the Visconti Homo sapien Bronze age EF which is on special at present. Which do you think is a more important pen to have in a limited collection? I have a Pilot vanishing point and Iove how it writes but it is not a long session writing pen. The best writing😀 pen in my collection is a Waterman Carene which got me started in this interest
LOL you sound like someone looking to spend a few bucks on a next level pen. Got me thinking, I should do a video about that. Line up all my high end pens and do a bit of a chat. Might be able to bring up a few points to think of
So this is my philosophy I started with this to improve my handwriting. I thought I would limit myself to 10 iconic pens or so I am trying. So far Monte Blanc Starwalker (Gift) Waterman Carene (My first decent pen and still by far the smoothest writing pen I own.) Pilot Vanishing point, Pilot E95S, Visconte Wheatfields with Crows, TWSBI 580 Diamond in rose gold, TWSBI Eco, Pelikan Limited edition M205 petrol. So the other two pens are the Pilot 823 Smoke fine, and of course the Lamy 2000. Now there are some notable maybes. The Visconti Homo Sapien Bronze Age EF though gone a bit cold on that one), and a Kaweco brass or Travelers brass travel pen or maybe the TWSBI Supra. Not sure how important it is to have a converter for travel. . Then I promised my wife I would stick to inks. So then if I want other pens I have to sell one of my 10. The philosophy being I wouldn't sell my children. Bottom line I do lots of other things but at the moment I am recovering from shoulder surgery so this has been alot of fun discovering the pen fraternity.Mind you that Laban is pretty sweet! Only 10 Paul! Only 10..
Oh by the way what part of Canada are you? Been there several times and always had a great time. Guess its the Commonwealth bond. My experience in the USA was very different. A story of a a travelling Australian for another time.

@@Doodlebud thanks! I think I have a pen virus and it’s gonna be difficult. I have been to Vancouver a couple times. Likewise had a great time. My wife spent time in Toronto learning French while I attended a three month course at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Rockport Maine USA. We then spent a month together exploring Quebec. This was in 2019. Just before Covid hit. I’ll see you in the comments.
The Ondoro appears to be the clear winner here, Db, however, ink samples being what they are, will provide a differential in that line width. I suppose an improved comparitive would be all of the above writing instruments using the same ink. I love my 2K EF, but I'm considering other nib width options for this pen model; knowing me, it'll be at the other end of the spectrum - a juicy, no compromise BB ! Take it easy,

The EF on the L2K is by far the thickest EF nib I have. Wish they did have a proper EF option
Yeah, really, they should cut an EEF nib that equates to a more realistic font line, & you already know that most German manufacturers always run to the broader edge of their designation - I have the same issue with my Pelikans.. Surprised at Lamy tho', given their accuracy with tolerances, Db 🤨
Guess since they manufacture their own nibs they have their own sizing scheme the decided to go with. But would be cool if they had an XXF options available. I'm sure they'd have no issue being able to make a nib with finer tip size
That would be my supposition too, but then it's setting up more machinery to make that gauge. They'd need to get feedback from their client base to see if it's viable.
Could you maybe do a pilot ef or f comparing with the Lamy2000 ef? Because now you've compared all european ef nibs instead and no japanese ef's. Thanks very much!!
If I get an Japanese EF I can bit I don't have any. I do have a 823 fine & a platinum fine

Whats up with the condensation? Does it encourage mold?
Depends on climate. I get condensation on a lot of my pens in the winter time up here in Canada. Contamination causes mold, not so much from just water.

Probably my vintage Shaffer PFM V. It's a snorkel filler and it can shoot ink pretty far! Maybe I could use it to help put out the fire!😆🔥🔥🚒
My Lamy 2000 writes drier than my expectation. How can I increase its flow. I basically want it to be a fire hose
Well depends if your expectation is reasonable. What size nib point do you have on your L2K?
@@Doodlebud i have a medium nib L2K and using it with Iroshizuku KonPeki and it is one of the driest pens of my collection. My Fabe4 castell Loom with the dry Pelikan 4001 inks still write wetter than the Lamy 2000
Oh wow that's odd! I was thinking maybe you had an EF & were wanting super flow. How old is the pen? Could possibly get a warranty fix/replacement. Otherwise it's adjust the nib, most likely gap. Also the 2 piece feed can be taken out, & the top part removed. Some viewers said they did that & the pen became a fire hose. My engineering video on the L2K shows how the feed come apart in 2 pieces.
@@Doodlebud I removed the upper part of the feed and now the pen writes fairly wet. Not a gusher yet but the difference is considerable. Though I am not brave enough to tweak a gold nib, I will take it a professional.

@@Doodlebud Copped the Extra Fine nib as well, but since this seems comparable to Pelikan's nibs in width it should still be smooth.
