  • In this episode of Mushroom Wonderland, Aaron Hilliard- VP of the Kitsap Peninsula Mycological Society and Creator of Mushroom Wonderland takes un on a foray in the forest of Western Washington to see what wild mushrooms are growing in the dead of winter, and helps to identify them and give any special facts about these shrooms.
    On our walk we encounter 2 types of common conch mushrooms in a conifer dominant forest- the "artists conch," Ganoderma applanatum and the "Red Belted Conch," Fomitopsis mounceae. We learn to decipher the two from one another. Then we come across a suprise flush of "Candy Caps," Lactarius rubidus- a sweet edible delicacy. We come across some mature "Decievers," Laccaria laccata group. We have a look at some beautiful "Rosy Conchs," Rhodofomes cajanderi. We coma across a large troop of "The Black Footed Polypore," Picipes badius. We also do a bit of a show and tell to reveal what he carries in his backpack while out foraging.
    This video is an attempt to make the video a bit more professional, shot in 4k with beautiful sweeping drone shots, amazing forest footage and improved sound quality. Hopefully it makes for a more enjoyable viewing experience.
    I am not endorsing any of the products in my pack.
    Thanks for watching and Mush-love!!

    I would recommend carrying about 50 ft of fishing line tied to a washer for pulling down oysters/lion's mane from high in trees. It works really well and doesn't take up much space at all

Definitely like the advice on having a tracking app. I use OnX and feel a lot safer just having it as a backup. I also like being able to mark waypoints on it if I find a cool mushroom, or some animal tracks, or whatever's clever. It's pretty easy to become disoriented in the woods, especially in unfamiliar areas. Thanks for the content!

    Question! Mushrooms that grow on trees I heard that they are not poisonous is this true or false?

    • @mushroomwonderland1
      @mushroomwonderland1  2 роки тому

      There are some mushrooms that grow on trees that you do not want to eat, some that are extremely poisonous and deadly. Galerina marginata for example, which is extremely deadly, grows on dead trees. So do Hypholoma fasciculare, which are a pretty toxic Northwest mushroom. A lot of the Pholiota are not recommended for eating, and they grow on trees.. even honey mushrooms (Armillaria) can have adverse reactions on about 40% people who try them. So definitely not true. There's no fast and hard rules about edibility in the mushroom world. You have to take it on a case-by-case basis.

    Is there a way to DIY a Lion's Mane I can find in nature into a supplement? Mushrooms trigger sensory issues, so I can't do them in their natural state. But I love going out, I love using natures gifts for my brain health.
