Looks like the same engine ford used in the fiesta of the same era . They suffered from water ingress from the the washer jets when raining which ran down the spark plug wells which caused misfires
Its the washer jet in the bonnet that allows water (rain) to leak into the engine bay onto the cylinder head. Ford modified the early Mk2 Focus washer jet using an additional seal. These can be bought from Ford at around £5 for a pair. The rust is where the water rusts the core plugs in the head. Keep an eye on these as when they rust they go thin. If the water in the head is pink then they have already gone. Can also cause a misfire error to appear on the dash (MIL) & generate an ODBII error code.I have also seen the channel where the spars are full of oil where the gasket/seal has leaked after a cam belt change & to save money the gasket/seal hasn't been changed.
Funny, I've got the 2006 mk2 1.6L. I had the exact same problems. Took me about 45 min to replace the head gasket. I solved the water from leaking in by putting a very thin layer of clear silicone amongst the windscreen sprayer and bonnet. Haven't had a problem since.
Thank you for your video.
It's a known problem. I don't exactly know if there was a recall on that water leaking onto the spark plugs, issue. But as far as I know you can buy a cover for it at a Ford or Volvo dealer. As back in those days Volvo was owned by Ford.
Really look forward to your videos, no nonsense just straight forward spannering in the driveway. Long may you continue.
The mk2f has oil sipping out on the very same spot. Plus, boots have rusty ends too. I didn't get the valve cover open (yet) but seeing you do the very same thing gives me courage. Thanks James, have a nice day
Good video mate as always. As others have already mentioned, great cars and especially the 1.6 Zetec's which do seem to go on forever if maintained right. One thing I will point out is even though you may of cured the oil leak - be sure to keep a close eye on other things such as the driveshafts & also around the power steering area. It's common for these engines after 10 years / 100K miles to start leaking oil or even gearbox oil on other places such as the following due to failing seals. I had a minor but very slow leak on my old MK2 1.6 which I never got around to resolving which seemed to have started around one of the driveshafts & eventually started to trail around the lower sump area.
Impressed by how far you've come mechanically since I've started watching you. You have a keen eye for the details like myself! Seen much worse 'professional' mechanics in my trade. Good job for investing in quality hand tools and I enjoy your vids!
the reason the spark plug wells are rusty are typically because water leaks through the washer jets and lands on the HT leads. common way to fix is apply silocone to stop water leaking through
Thank you mate for the share. I'm having the same issue, found oil around the spark plugs. The car doesn't have many miles, for a Ford from 2005, only with 53 thousand, but, yes, this leak needs to be check. Cheers
Great job again James. I've got a focus mk3 ecoboost ford's are easy to work on. Focus are great cars.
Thank a lot, you helped me fixing mine, well done.
Great video, wish I'd found this when I had to repair my car. I had a similar problem with the spark plug cavity, although in mine was coolant. Seems the core plugs had corroded over the years and allowed coolant in. New core plugs, some silicone, new spark plugs, and my engine has been fine (5 weeks and counting).
Loving this channel very different too the others on the whole UA-cam game! Keep it up.
Hi yes it is a common issue around the spark plugs I had a Mk1 and it was on this car too. Enjoyed the vid thanks
Beware of the power steering connection, it was a known fault, mine failed and lost all steering, scary stuff doing 110mph in the fast lane of the motorway, nearly ruined everything it leaked on too.
Good job showing and explaining everything, very chill
👍👍👍
Hi James, also had that issue with the washer jets leaking onto the valve cover! I might take it off and just check if you've had standing water there. Mines a 1.6 petrol
Great step by step tutorial, keep em coming 👍
Just had the same problem..it was the camshaft seal that was goosed..cleaned it up and put lots of sealant on..sorted no more oil leaking
Rust in the spark plug tray means water is getting in from the windscreen spary nozzel area. Seal this up from underneath to prevent any future leaks.
every video is usefull the info documented is vital to anyone wanting to do the same or similar job, as always easy watching.
cheers
Great video mate, very informative!
I have the same oil leak coming from the same area Thanks so much for this video will be working on it tomorrow!
Another quality vid James. You need to use the tripod to keep both your hands free. With the GoPro, you should use the accessories like the head and chest mounts. I can't believe you haven't changed the spark plugs in 2 years! I change them as part of the annual service. I noticed that you fitted NGK plugs which I swear by myself. Never had a problem with NGK plugs.
You been lucky getting them spark plugs out common fault for them to snap cos water from the scuttle panel leaks on to them rember the first customers focus i did the plugs on and they snapped keep up the good work
Great vid james. I love your video's. You explain everything so clear. Great job 👍👍
You are like the UKs Chris Fix. Keep it up buddy love your videos
I would have to say it depends on the engine in the mk2 focus my sister has a 1.6 and it’s been problematic of late with a water leak and 3 sensors that have needed changing and still seems to be a on and off issue and her car has done 96k whilst my 1.8 of the same year I have had coming up to 4 years doesn’t miss a beat at nearly 136k the only thing I have had to do is change the EGR valve recently plus the added bonus of the 1.8 is it’s a chain driven and not belt. It’s serviced every year before winter regardless of mileage. Correct me if I’m wrong but I think the 1.6 is a evolution of the old zetec engine but the 1.8 is a duratec he i had one in a mk3 mondeo and it was the 2.0 and was brilliant only thing it ever needed was a auxiliary belt tensioner because it rattled on idle
Another top vid. This will definitely be helpful for someone 👍
Vary good I have a 2007 20l petrol ghia love the car had it since 2012 like yours been great I do my own servicing upgrade the headlights and radio
If you can remove the crank pulley bolt then to change the timing belt is easy, I done mine last week, I never done that before, but I did struggled to take out the crank pulley bolt, dont rely on the locking tools, I heard the pin to lock the crankshaft sometimes bends and that is a big problem. better lock the flywheel with an screwdriver. Nice video by the way!
Good video I had the problem with the focus starting then cutting out I changed the leads aswell as the coil pack and plugs wasn’t expensive at all from euro and had no problems after that
Great tutorial. Also another problem with water/coolant getting into the spark plugs are the core plugs eroding.
Had them both go on mine. Nightmare!
Now it's fucking oil! Luckily I've watched this and can fix it. Haha.
Love the focus vids !
I’ve had a mk 1 focus for 3 years, keep getting an engine code for low threshold catalytic converter... sails through the MOT every year though
One of the most honest and likeable people on youtube...well done mate.
9:10 I had the same problem on my MK5 2002 Fiesta 1.4 Zetec, in my case all the water was cause of misfires!
Good vid, look forwards to the timing belt!
the rust and water in you plug trenches is due to your core plugs in the cylinder head...very common problem on this model. you will find that its almost impossible for water to get in there from washers or rain leak, it would have to fill up the outer wells then bypass the plug rubbers and drop down into the cavity. pop off a plug lead after a run and you'll probably find the core plugs damp or worse. I had the same problem on mine. bit of a bad design really, otherwise great engine. they are;nt hard to replace and only a couple of quid. loads of stuff on you tube about this, cheers.
Great video as always. Any time you wanna show how to do inner tie rods on a focus go ahead !!
I hope you have more luck than me with this job, replaced gasket twice on my focus, still leaked, had to buy a ford OEM gasket, that fixed it, only difference was the gasket seemed thicker and more spongy
My old fiesta used to fill up with water around the sparks plugs as well
Hi James. Another good video as usual. Check the inside of the spark plug boot which had the broken porcelain inside it. There would have been a spark jumping the gap and jumping straight to the rubber boot. This will obviously damage the inside so have a good look at it.
You may allready know but when you end up doing the timing belt the crankbolt should be very tight to remove depending if its been done before. When you get it off use a new bolt with locktight and get it as tight as possible as its a floating crank. Ive heard a few horror stories on these engines when the bolt isnt tight enough
surprised it ran with the state of those plugs, caught them in time, nice job
Really like your videos mate. One thing just wondering why you never use cordless tools in your videos. A impact driver would of made the job even quicker. Also if you plan on doing the cambelt on these make sure you get the timing kit as it's not keyed on the crank or the cams. Keep up the awesome content!
Keep it up mate, timing belt will be a good watch!
Nice to see such a well maintained car.
Definitely need an engine cover, notorious for water getting onto the spark plugs. Cover should deflect the water away.
Fab! Thanks for the great vid
Good video, cam belt and water pump that sounds interesting.
Hi James.
When is the timing belt change on the focus, looking forward to that!
My mk6 zetec s did this with the water in the spark plugs but it did it everyday, used to get full of coolant in the spark plug wells and misfire like crazy
Throttle butterfly sticking and breather pipe under inlet manifold splits are common running faults and water getting on ht leads.food for thought. ....
Hey mate, draper do a locking set for the timing belt on the focus, less than 20 quid . Straight plate for the cams and a pin for the crank. Good work !!
Hi James, just a recommendation that you change your core plugs on top of the head as well as the washer jet seals, I’ve just done mine last week end and it’s a relatively easy job, it’s one of the reasons why there is rust all over the spark plugs due to coolant slowly finding its way out and then eventually rotting right through like mine did and nearly overheating! Whoops!
The seals of the jets are the main reason of that... I put some silicone around them and it seems to work
First Class Production Again "J ".
Baz..
Another good video keep up the good work
Crazy, I was just doing the rocker gasket while this vid was being uploaded. While in there I noticed the breather pipe was loose, slow idle return fixed! Can I ask you something about the MK2 while I'm here?
James brilliant video mate just asking if your channel keeps growing which im sure it will would u consider getting a unit with a lift in or are you guna carry on fixing cars on your drive 👍👍
sorry just caught up with video where you mention it anyway. LOL. love the video james
Had same issue with difficult start in my case it was just changing plugs coil pack and wires + when I got wires they came with silicon apparently that to stop water from collecting :) focus mk1 1.6 40k Millage :D
Love the chanel have good one :)
On the other hand my focus has had the bonnet fly open and 60 the outside temp sensor break and the dpf filter clogg up in the past 3 days
My KA was drenched in oil after a few days of owning it, oil constantly burning off the exhaust manifold and completely soaking up the bolt holes. New gasket and some Hylomar, not a drop of oil for 3 months now. Strangely, the gasket I removed looked absolutely fine so I'm not really sure what was going on.
What infotainment system have got installed?
This is useful infor. thank you sir
Good content mate, quick question... do you use copper grease on spark plug threads?
What a coincidence, today i wanted to change the Valve cover gasket on my 2002 Fiesta 1.3 as well, because it was leaking. Sadly i found out in the process that the cover has a little crack on the backside, which was leaking as well :(.
I have an oil leak on my 2005 mk2 focus. Also need new bushes but can't afford to do them 😂. By the way I LOVE those leather seats, they'll look nice in my focus 😂
Seems like we spend most of our time doing odd jobs and jobs for other people and seem to neglect our own work horses at Times can relate to this one as I’ve just caught up with some odd jobs on my own van before it’s too cold and can’t really be bothered good videos any way bud
Just found out why my mk2 focus sometimes slightly misfires in heavy rain......THANKS
I had to replace my mk1 focus gasket n spark plugs yesterday:)
Some serious speed rachet work there. Tbh it wouldn't be much of a Ford without a slow oil leak
Had the same issue with my Mk2 Focus - water from the washers getting into the spark plugs. Used expanding foam to seal the washers and no more problems.
I believe Focus’s after a certain year had modified washer jets with a rubber seal (or something like that) on them. And a lot of ppl have said just replacing them with the newer types has solved the problem.
Phillip Gwynne Yeah I’ve heard that too. Probably the best way to fix the problem...
The washer jet leaking issue was fixed by 2008 with upgraded jets.
Hello bruv, Oluwabunmi(James from Australia) Nice video!
But my question is; how do you know exactly where the oil is leaking from, I bought a used ford focus 2003 all the engine components all smeared up with leaking oil and I don't know where the oil leaking from.
I'll be grateful if you could reply me on time where to trace the oil leaking.
Thank you in anticipation of your reply
New subscriber. Good stuff. Like your rembreance of the ww1 vets.
Can you do a video on how to replace o2 sensors?
I've American Focus 2016 SE 2.0L and was told you never know , it could caause a fire ?? anyway rear seal the one in between engine and transmission has oil leak among others ..any idea hoe hard it'd be for someone with some mechanical experience to replace valave cover ? It's been many years since I did any engine work . did a couple in trade school waaay back when
Nice video m8
It's vital to add a small blob of RTV at the point where the cam "arches" meet the flat head surface (so 4 blobs in total) as the gasket cannot seal there correctly. It will leak. Most, if not all, OEM cam cover gaskets come with a diagram telling you to do this. The cover should be torqued down in sequence too...
It didnt have any in those areas when i took it off.. and it wasnt leaking there either so i think it will be ok :)
@@TheSavageGarage See diagram 3: ows-cdn.tecdoc.net/cis/documents/DThJ3OjG3xxteHFL3/3113903/0
Lol did a spark plug hole thread repair on one of them today
thanks for the vid
I would worry about all those keys and stuff on your car key...absolutely bad for the ignition switch!
Had an oil leak from the back of cam sensor on my mk1 focus common problem the rubber seal cracks over time
Being there you should check valve clearance.
Good job matey
I got to sort my exhaust out but it’s so cold outside
yes want to see water pump done
Hope you’re well! Come on matey, time for some new videos.
Ever since the 'zetec' engines Ford's smaller petrol engines are actually rebadged Mazda engines, because Ford didn't have a decent enough small petrol engine to meet efficiency/emissions/power demands.
I think Ford agreed to share either their duratorq (diesel) or larger (v6/v8) petrol engines with Mazda in exchange this.
The 'duratec' petrol series share almost all parts with the Mazda L-series engines.
The petrol focus 1.6 will probably be pretty similar to the 1.6 in the Mazda 2 or 3.
Yes Steve, I bought a new water pump for my 1.6 focus and the box label specified ford & mazda.
I have the 1.6 petrol 2005 best car iv had reliability wise :)
The core plugs in the top of the head near the spark plugs needed doing as they didn't look good I've had them fail loads when I've preasure tested those heads easy job to do
Youre not the first to point them out, i wasnt aware so i will tackle them
I think they are 28mm or 30 can't really remember been a while since I've done them ford still sell them if I remember right
They do still sell them, not expensive at all either. Best thing to do is find a socket that fits in the middle of the core plug flush (18/19mm) and tap them in on top of the original core plug. Use a bit of silicone sealant upon installing and should never have a problem again. Also I usually make custom fit covers to go over the HT Leads and use the 2 threaded holes on the rocker cover as mounting points for bolts to stop the water from the washers.
My god you were lucky with that plug as the ceramic broke on a corolla I had and the engine ate it. Not good for the pocket.
If the misfire continues its likely the coil pack as they normally break around 120,000 km
I had to change mine at 124k they were rusty as hell and was misfiring.
Great job.
Great video
Those engines are solid. Best engine Ford ever built. I have a Mk3 Mondeo, has driven 154000 and drives like new. Haven’t encountered any mechanical issues since I’ve owned it.
Good engine yeah, but nothing Ford build in Europe will ever beat the Essex. On gaskets I will add one word HYLOMAR
Kishan Jadeja oh so you know how I drive? Spooky. Sadly for you, this is merely your opinion, as it’s now common knowledge that these engines are solid. Plus, they were built to last.
@@kishanjadeja6894 Really? When you grow up you will realise the old American idiom......"No substitute for cubic inches" The Essex was and is still fantastic without fooling it with computers. Looked after is good for 500k miles Fact!
Excellent. You can buy a cover made by Volvo to cover the spark plugs to stop the water ingress. 4 bolts to attach and about £25 quid.
