    I named by daughter Lynnaea (Lynn-nay-uh) she was the only one named that in my whole Provence for that year she was born. I felt guilty naming her a unique name because of all the trouble people give me about it and how people have a hard time pronouncing it. But after hearing how proud you are in your unique names and how the meanings of names matter I feel less insecure about my daughters name. I hope she wear it proudly too.

Also it’s your baby and you have every right to change her name or just keep it from the public eye all you want, you’re doing what you think is best for your baby and that’s all that matters! It's so funny because we are all waiting with anticipation, and of course you don't know yet 🤣 Being born in your family requires a well-thought-out name, and it certainly cannot be "scrotum." Much love to you and the family❣️

    My son is 4.5 years old and we want to change his name because we ended up always calling him by his middle name since he was a few months old instead of his first name but it’s such a big deal to change it here in the US and costs a lot of money.. They wouldn’t let us leave the hospital without his name so we were forced to pick something. Had we been allowed to take the time and get to know him before being forced to make such a huge decision, it would have been less stressful and we would have picked our second option. We still go back and forth if we should legally change it. 🙃

  • @elliotkl
    @elliotkl Рік тому +4

    Obviously you'll name her what you want, but I strongly urge you to consider the cultural appropriation in naming a non-Native American child "Sacagawea." I understand wanting a unique name that is just for her, but there are so many other names that are strong and/or historical female (or male!) names that don't come with the cultural appropriation issues inherent in naming a non-Native child a very Native name. Perhaps some of this is different understandings about names and different naming conventions in Australia and Finland versus the US, such that it doesn't seem like a big deal to name a little White girl Sacagawea. However, there'd be severe backlash if a non-Native/First Nations family here in the US used that name for their child.
    Whether it's her official name on documentation or not, if that's the name she grows up with and is called by family, and the name her friends and classmates know her by, it's the name she'll very likely continue to use as an adult (and there's really no good nickname you could even switch to if she wanted to hold onto some of "Sacagawea" without actually using the name). As a baby and toddler she's not going to be impacted by that, but as she gets older, and especially into college, adulthood, a career, she's going to get questions or be talked about behind her back. I'd hate for her to have that as her fate given other unique names out there that wouldn't cause questions, backlash, prevent her from getting certain opportunities, etc.

    • @elliotkl
      @elliotkl Рік тому +5

      To add my personal thoughts and feelings: even though my Native ancestory is too far back to be officially/legally claimed and recognized, it feels "icky" to me to hear a white Finnish/Australian person name their child Sacagawea and have a whole video on it without even recognizing and addressing the strong cultural implications of that name. It's not a name of a woman who existed over 2000 years ago, or the name of a famous and admired artist or writer of European ancestry. Those names are certainly unusual, but there is not really a direct cultural tie that can lead to offending a very oppressed and persecuted minority group. It's specifically the cultural appropriation that is the issue and that I find upsetting and offensive.

You're so good at choosing names, this kind of video could help not only Cleopatra but other moms to choose beautiful names to their own babies. Also, Cleopatra, don't be sad ok? Cleopatra, I have been keeping this name quietly for myself (being the history buff that I am) , but I think that it might work for you and your baby girl. This name is Versailles. After both the palace and the treaty. ( But mostly the treaty. I love the syllables, meaning, and what this means for France, Europe, and the rest if the world. Good luck naming her. I know that whatever you end up with will be amazing, just like her, her mother, and her grandmother.

    I understand completely. After my son was born, Will Smith named his son, and suddenly, a unique name I had found in a baby book, and had never heard before was everywhere. There is no one in the world with my name, (Shannahon) as far as I can research, and my daughter Trevelyn is unique as well. Poor Jaedan has someone with his name everywhere he goes. Being unique is great, as long as you don't mind correcting others in pronunciation, and spelling.

    My son’s name was going to be Zaphod or Oleander, but we chose Hector because it’s still incredibly uncommon, yet it’s something relatable to the elders of my husband’s family. His middle name is still interesting though. It’s Brox, after Zaphod Beeblebrox - the two headed president of the universe from Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. I often call him by both names as if it were one: “Hectorbrox.” It sounds kind of like a fantasy name that way and completely unique. There is only one Hectorbrox.

    Cleopatra, may I suggest a name? Since she has the name Sacagawea, there is another Native American name that I feel will go well. Matoaka. Matoaka, was Pocahontas’s name at birth. She was named this because she was born between the Mattaponi and Pamunkey rivers. Matoaka was Pocahontas’s “secret name” that only people in her tribe knew. Outsiders called her Pocahontas, an endearing nickname given to her by her father.

In the UK, we have to register a baby register a baby by 42 days after the birth and can only change it once, although some registrar's wouldn't allow a change. Everyone born has to be registered with a name by day 42 because of our healthcare system. She's gorgeous!

    What about Talulla. It is a native word for “leaping waters”, which she did in your tummy when you flew back to be your family. Or, some other unusual or less common names:
    Sarai - “my princess”
    Cassiopeia - “She who chooses to excel”
    Thaïs - “Beloved”
    Avalon - “island of apples” - she’s the apple of your eye.
    Ophelia - “beauty, selflessness, help”
    Andromeda - “leader of humankind”
    Persephone - “bringer of light”
    Grace - “ favour or blessing”
    Juno - “Queen of heaven”
    Cariad - the Welsh word for “love, charity, affection”
    Bloom, Blossom, Jewel, Ellora, Cosette, Dove, and I still like Birdie. ❤

    I’ve had two boys two years in a row, they’re mixed as well and I felt like I was done. But after seeing her sweet face, I could ask my husband to try again for a little girl lol she’s adorable!

    I've got a friend called Naveena which means highly attractive girl. I've got another friend called Sakhina which means peace. I worked with a girl Keziah which means restored to the heart of God and she was the daughter of Job in the Hebrew Bible I think.

    Here in Germany you can actually not change the name very easily. I wish it was. We named him after his grandfather on his father's side of the family and we separated 2 months after he was born. He didn't show much interest in the kid since.

    I never really knew how to pronounce Taina, and to also learn about nominative determinism was fascinating, so your first video was still incredibly informative.

    Cleopatra, take as long as you need. A name is a very powerful and special thing to give to anyone or anything, especially your child. So far, I've loved all the names you've said, but definitely pick what is right for you😊

    Its absolutely ok if you are not revealing the name right now. And you are changing the name. There is nothing wrong. You are her mum. Obviously you would choose the best for your daughter. So just chill. When you feel comfortable to share. We'll be happy.

    As a fan since Taina announced the pregnancy with Omega, for me it is fine to have some privacy, let some things for yourself! Naming a baby is hard and she deserves the best name to suit her. Don't feel bad for not having it yet or not announcing it so us, we care more about your happiness and safety! ☺

    Take your time, Cleopatra! A name is soooo important because in some ways it defines how we see ourselves. But if you’re taking suggestions, I’d like to re-submit Cassiopeia for consideration 😂 💕🇨🇦

    I only found out when my daughter was graduating from college that her middle name should have had an accent on the "a". It was way too late to fix it, but I wish I had known when she was born. Of course, I live in Utah, and they don't understand accent marks on names at all. So, it might have backfired.
    She is your daughter. Picking her name is extremely important. If it takes time, it takes time.
